If he was going to let JJ go now, unless he already has a bargain in mind, I would prefer to see him bite the financial bullet. Get the coach he wants, then figure out what the check has to be to bring that coach here.
Yep, nose plugs. I remember that one well. The kid was getting absolutely annihilated, but I have to say, he had the stones to keep coming back onto the field long after I thought he was beyond battered.
Which is why he was the focus of my first comment from that team and why he is still playing professional basketball. The flip side of the coin is that that class, that team didn't accomplish enough under Greenberg. Unfortunately, they lost in the second round of the NIT in 2005 and second round of the NCAA his senior year.
ACC Defensive Player of the Year his senior year as well. I still always saw him as a steady contributor but lacked that game changing difference maker except against Duke and North Carolina his senior year. I guess you can contend that going to the post season twice in a Tech career is above the norm but to me it wasn't enough for the talent they seemed to have.
2003- 15-14
2004- 16-14 Really frustrating team that went 13-3 at Home. They couldn't fight out of a paper bag on the road though.
2005- 14-16 Sadly probably Gordon's best year at Tech statistically speaking. It just didn't translate on the court as a team
2006- 22-12 Second round NCAA exit getting our doors blown off by Southern Illinois.
Career record at Tech was 67-56. Is that all on Gordon, no Dowdell played a big role in the underachievement as well. Were there exciting moments, absolutely. If Gordon had been more the game changer, he would have caught on in the NBA, even as a role player off the bench. I do remember still having hope when he signed with the Wizards in 2007 but even they didn't really give him a shot unfortunately.

Looks like we're about to find out just how serious Whit is about bringing in top coaching talent on the bball side.
Two choices for Whit at this point in time - bite the financial bullet now, or go through this same process three years down the road.
parking shouldn't be an issue anywhere for the spring game, most parking lots are usually half full at best

Pretty sure those are the nose plugs from the bloody nose he already had in that game. That game is one of my favorite defensive efforts, that qb got murdered.
Its not a big deal. I will continue to do the work because I enjoy it whether I am "official" or not. I appreciate the support. As I have said before, its easy to talk Hokies with Hokies.

In all fairness, though, I think it's easier to recruit the NE for basketball than it is to recruit Blacksburg. I wouldn't see him leaving, but who does he get to play anymore? St. Johns? Providence? Georgetown, sure.
Don't know anything about his coaching abilities, but jazzed about VMI getting a quality guy in there. We were always terrible at football while I was there, but I am hopeful he can help to make them at least competitive.

Jamon Gordon was one of, if not the best defensive guard VT has every had.
I think you may be right..McFarling tweeted about the JJ firing so I'm sure he covers VT in general. This is, after all, a football blog, so even though we discuss other sports I stand by my statement.

Very nice list. I would strike the following names, though:
PJ Carlesimo - Too old and once choked Latrell Spreewell. Sure Spree was a terrible human being, but some parents will remember that. Plus he is getting up there in age.
Anthony Grant just went 13-19 in the SEC and is making $1.9 mil a year. Too much coin for too little return IMO.
Fran Dunphy is most likely never leaving Philly.

I really wish we could re hire Mr. Seth Greenberg again. Say what you will, but he lead our team into a top 25 ranking in basketball, which I really don't ever remember seeing in my 28 years of following the Hokies. I think Weaver really did him wrong after what he did for our basketball program. Greenberg couldnt help that we were constantly disregarded from the NCAA Tournament. There was a lot of exciting basketball being played by our Hokie with him at the helm. I say bring him back.
Lot 5? I don't remember how crowded parking was last year. That close but far enough that hopefully we would be able to have some room to spread out
To further enforce your point, Miami actually played five seniors heavily with Shane Larkin. Plus they redshirted another senior that year too. They were built to win that year.
