I think they let James Jones walk because of how Boykin showed he could deliver on the field. That and the injury issues that always plagued him. Jones will fit right into the Oakland Infirmary.
What year was that? I feel a burning desire to find this game and watch it in its entirety.
I am of the same mindset of Brian. This hiring will likely define the next three to five years of this Athletic Department. If Whit is confident in his ability to raise the funds necessary to bring this program into the same air as the SEC football schools, Texas, Stanford, and UCLA than he is going to have to be willing to open the checkbook all the way up.
^^^^^^ THIS
All who think Whit is thinking "gosh, I can't spend an extra $700k to hire a front line coach, need to get a diamond in the rough" I think are in for a surprise. He's going to make a serious splash and leverage the big time good will among donors to easily pay for it. The guy can raise funds and needs to send a message with this hire. Would not be surprised to see him spend well north of $2 mil
Why are we worried about the new basketball coach? We're just gonna move him to tight end anyways.
5. Has a history of making things up / bending the truth.
Even in this situation he's already backpedaled a bit.
2:12 PM "Just spoke with a very good source inside the basketball program for about an hour. Learned some very damning things about J.J.'s tenure."
[String of damning tweets from his source with no mention of another source.]
3:00 PM "Perhaps the most telling thing about Johnson is that he was described to Whit Babcock as a "tyrant" behind closed doors. #Hokies"
[Oh look, magically a second source appears.]
7:21 PM "My source is not the staffer that called JJ a "tyrant." That was from a different higher up member of the basketball staff. #Hokies"
Even if it's a little thing like that, given his history of misconstruing facts, you're at best getting a partial truth. If you're happy with that, then so be it. However, I don't want this website to be a vehicle for partial truths because the telephone game is a nasty means of information exchange.
Congrats to Justin! He was one of my favorite people when I was at VT.
I feel like it's worth noting that Green Bay let James Jones walk, and he's a Raider now. This is a great opportunity for Boykin to entrench himself as the #3 guy behind Nelson and Cobb. Jones had 17 TD's in the last two seasons, so I have to assume a lot of that production is going to pass to Boykin.
I dunno, I think it's a little out of whack.
Is it the real Jason in Arlington?
I'm the real HOAT...
It's like here at work. We have to use IE8. We have the option for Chrome, but nothing works since it doesn't automatically accept the swapped security certs and Java and crashes 1/4 of the time. Firefox is similar, but has issues with any flash which I require for legitimate purposes and that means autoplay video ads crash it.
IE has none of those problems but is a steaming pile of crap. It crashes, hangs, and displays everything wrong just because it has the functional capability of a rock.
So you want to beat 1 top 25 team every year, then lose to 3 teams outside the top 200? Because that was pretty much the Seth Greenburg Formula.
I understand, but PJ hasn't been nearly as successful as a HC as Larry Brown. Just because Larry Brown can succeed at an advanced age doesn't mean PJ could, especially because PJ hasn't proven to be a top flight coach at any age. Sure he found some success last year as the interim coach of the Nets, but that team was in need of a babysitter, not a true coach.
The conference is an absolute shell of its former self. Its nowhere near the prestige levels of the BigEast as we knew it even 2 seasons ago.
You, sir, have an abolsolute classic TKP handle- Jason in Arlington.
anyway - cool about Hamilton!
JHam was the definition of a team player. The guy switched positions multiple times and didn't complain. I just wish we would have put him on D right away. Congrats on the new job!!

Alright guys, I've got the perfect candidate. He's been named by nearly every coaching search over the last 2 years but has yet to make the jump. I think this is the perfect opportunity for him too. So here it is...
John Gruden
/sarcastica
PJ too old?! Larry brown is older than 70.
Buzz Williams rumors heating up as well.
Because the Big East is done?
Technically, the Big East just started. 8 private, basketball-centric schools left what is now the AAC (American Athletic Conference, formerly the Big East), to create their own conference, and called the Big East.
I think the hire has to be big. Needs to have started to or already established a name because the fan base and alumni wants results sooner after the last 2 years with JJ. This is the ACC which was hard enough before adding Pitt, Syracuse, and Louisville. The new coach has to have proven results against big teams to bring in the recruits we need to compete.
Not sure how I feel about this rumor.
He might have spoken with someone in the athletic department, but he's the exact opposite of what I'd consider to be a reputable source. Please stop embedded his Tweets here.
Sure, but consider:
- 2013 grad, probably still has contacts on campus and maybe within hoops program
- Has done work for local ESPN affiliate- potentially further developing realtionships with hoops staff
- Has one heck of an imagination if he made all this up
- 3rd party connection in women's hoops corroborates Hodges claims
Just sayin...
There was a reason he was fired. He couldn't win games he should've at the end of the season. Personally during his tenure I think there was only 1 year we were truly snubbed by the committee. The other seasons ended with bad losses and you can't do that as a bubble team.
You may be right...my fault. Senior Moment.
Either way, PJ is too old for my taste.

I like Buzz, but apparently he's making $2.8 mil at Marquette. Don't think Tech is gonna be able to swing that. Here's an interesting article that downplays the idea of Buzz leaving Marquette:
