To me, this is the most frustrating part of this debate. All of the legitimate reasons that analysts used in the preseason to predict a last place ACC finish for VT are now the same reasons that people are using to explain the results of our season. We pretty much did exactly what was expected of us based on the circumstances. Peter has been tirelessly outlining this to anyone willing to listen with an open mind. Yet some people think that calling these reasons "excuses" somehow makes them invalid. You do not get to wave them away as "excuses" just because you do not like where we are as a program.
What I haven't seen is a reasonable solution that involves firing JJ this year. Firing him now is not only bad financially, it also makes VT a school that is not attractive to potential candidates. What attractive coaching candidate would want to come here knowing how we treated our last two coaches and knowing that we cannot afford to pay them very well. Not only that, it would make it seem as though the new AD is just as bad as the old AD in terms of not truly "supporting" the men's basketball program. Bad behavior across two separate ADs would then define a bad culture for basketball and no worthwhile coach would want to be part of that.
In my mind, giving JJ another season will answer the question of whether or not JJ is "the guy". Right now, due to the circumstances we just do not know either way. If he brings us back to a .500 record then he has earned another year. If not, then we will truly know that it is time to move on. In the meantime, we will have been able to generate more money for a possible replacement, or if JJ does improve significantly, we will have been able to generate more money for other improvements within the basketball program. We will also have shown that, as a program, we are willing to give a potential coaching candidate a fair shake at coming in and turning things around. Coaches aren't dumb. They talk to one another. They want to coach somewhere that will give them a realistic chance.
Firing JJ now completely negates the image of a program that treats coaches well that we need to build in order to attract quality candidates. Firing JJ now decimates our ability to financially lure quality candidates to our program. Firing JJ now could possibly lead to us losing the respectable recruiting class we have coming in, leaving us right back where we started. I just do not see the logic of firing JJ now.
I get it. Losing sucks. Coming in last place three years in a row is frustrating beyond belief, but firing JJ doesn't fix the problems that the basketball program has. It just exacerbates them.

I never justified Stinespring, but there are definitely fans like that. If we don't get at least 17 wins next year then he has to go. If we make the NIT or better then he stays.

Sure, but next year we won't be running the "take the air out of the ball" defense, right? More bodies, more tempo, more points, higher scoring games for us and them. You don't get to give us more points and have our opponents points stay the same, I see what you did there ;)

3 OOC games, eliminate division rivals
Play fellow pod members every year (3 games)
Play one "cross" pod every year (4 games), "on-year" pod rotates, repeating every 3rd year
Year 1: A vs B and C vs D.
Year 2: A vs C and B vs D.
Year 3: A vs D and B vs C.
That's 7 ACC games, all common opponents between "on-year" pods to this point in season.

ACC games #8 and #9, play the off-year Pod teams of equal rank.
Game 8-9 opponents subtract travel costs from revenue and split profits. Opponents pick stadium.
Year #1, Pod A plays Pod B, so games 8 & 9 are A1 vs C1 then D1, B2 vs D2 then C2, and so on.
Year #2, Pod A plays Pod C, so games 8 & 9 are A1 vs D1 then B1, C2 vs B2 then D2, and so on.
Year #3, Pod A plays Pod D, so games 8 & 9 are A1 vs B1 then C1, D2 vs C2 then B2, and so on.
ACCCG: Two highest Conference record teams
Advantages:
Be the first conference to go to 16 teams...select from the best candidates.
Force ND to become full member or get off the pot.
Closest schools within pods should yield best attendance....
...and lowest travel costs.
Yearly intrastate rivalries maintained. Closest, potentially strongest rivalries are begun.
Players get to play against every school in the conference at least once.
Closest matched teams play at season end; the most interesting games and potentially more TV coverage/dollars.
The only possible repeat match-up is the ACCCG.
The best teams battle at the ACCCG; the strongest emerges to represent ACC in the National playoff.
Disadvantages:
Some old rivalries only get played every 3rd year.
Folks complain about uneven pod strength, but the "matching" of team strengths in games 8 & 9 negate this. Strength fluctuates over the years...realign based on that now, it'll change....geography doesn't.

From what my friend told me about all the tailgating/festivities that happen at Bristol Motor Speedway (for NASCAR races at least, he goes all the time) throughout the week before the event, people who going to the game and tailgating are in for a REAL treat. Some things include topless women jello wrestling and riding mechanical bulls, etc. Hope there arent many women that get offended by this or get down voted, just relaying the message. :)
You cant compare them apples to apples but I do think that seeing us score 64 on average in ACC play is a legitimate possibility. We only averaged 55.3 ppg in ACC play this year. That's a nine point increase and would be in line with the better defenses of the ACC compared to our OOC when you pick up the tempo and turn your opponent over more. Even 64 this year would have been nine wins this year in the ACC.
**The Eastern Shore game wasn't part of the 79 point average as it came after the slate of injuries.

It's going to be like 12-13 wins and that's when the mental exercises start turning "close losses" into wins, because we were "in it." Then there's going to be some other recruit coming in who is of course going to change everything, and we're not going want to lose him. Blah, Blah, Blah...
Trust me, I watched this fan base justify the continued employment of Bryan Stinepsring for a decade using the exact same "logic."

I use Safari but I also couldn't do yahoo's "click and drag" either to pick teams. Now Yahoo's bracket picking is almost as efficient as London's time clock management.
I'm saying we should give him at least one year where he gets his top recruits. Firing after these two seasons where we had 2 walk-ons playing significant minutes isn't fair. We're going to have 6 new bodies next year, let's see what he does then. I'm not one to hang on after 3 years, but firing him after this year will just set us back 2 years. If we fire him after next year then we'll have a much better chance at keeping guys like Bibbs and Hudson.
