Good point. I don't agree completely with the firing, but at least Whit didn't pull a Weaver and fire him a month after the season.
Completely agree. Was not his fault so many players decided to leave the program. It would be a totally different story if they all stayed in Blacksburg with Coach Johnson.
Wow, is this what it's like to have someone in the athletic department that doesn't take too long to make necessary changes?! I like it!
I've gotta say, regardless of what you think about him he was a great person and got an unlucky draw. I wish him all the best.
I was just going to say, it looks like this discussion may be over.
I can't help but feel what UVA accomplished this year may have forced Whit's hand a little.
I haven't filled one out yet but here we go:
1) Every single ESPN analyst on bracketology last night picked Michigan State to win it all. Every. Single. One. Greenberg, Bilas, Digger, Vitale, Anthony. Probability theory dictates that they're all wrong. Because reasons.
2) I'm picking VT to win it all.
3) Everyone who is having a problem with Chrome should hit F12 and use the tools to get rid of the offending dialog. I haven't looked at the site, but playing with the html usually works for me.
Gone.
Virginia Tech has fired James Johnson after two seasons, sources told ESPN.— Jeff Goodman (@GoodmanESPN) March 17, 2014
Jim Weaver was the reason why we were an unattractive coaching position. It was clear that he didn't care about basketball and didn't want to spend any money on it. No one can give a brand new AD a hard time for firing an incumbent coach coming of conseuctive 9-win seasons. Firing him and spending the money to bring in a coach who is actually qualified to coach in the ACC would send the exact opposite message that you think it would. It would mean we are committed to actually winning, and are willing to extend the resources necessary to do so.
Just took a look at his 247, looks like he had offers from Harvard & Wharton...want this kid as a Hokie but not going to blame him if he chooses Cambridge/Wharton instead (especially if he wants to go into finance).
I think what would help Virginia Tech is for him to get in contact with some of the finance professors. Derek Klock and Michael Kender should be the two guys pitching him. Kids from Pamplin are working at big-time firms (e.g. Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley) out of the SEED/BASIS programs, that should be in the forefront of Stiny's pitch.
The women's team is a varsity sport but the men's is still club.
Sounds like the next Chris Drager. If he keeps his grades up in college, he has Rhodes Scholar potential.
I didnt know Tech has a Lacrosse team. UVA's in trouble now!
Hopefully, they all end up at Virginia Tech. GO HOKIES!
I will say that JJ came to a gun fight with a dull knife when it came to ACC play. Injuries hurt us badly and we had a lot of youth on the court. Early on, the only guy we could look to for scoring was Eddie. If any of the guys coming in this year are an offensive threat, then we will be much better next year. Watching our games, we had no one really taking the ball towards the rim. We didn't have anyone that could beat their guy 1v1. Maybe they are there but they weren't comfortable doing it? I don't know. Wilson started to show some ability late in the season and looked much better than early on.
Something else I think we have been missing since JT Thompson got hurt is someone with just pure athleticism. We don't have that energy out there. Thompson wasn't a great scorer but that guy out hustled people just on his athletic ability. He could out jump most of the guys out there and was a physical guy. I would like to see someone like that again on the court.
OK....i'm in....got final 4 of Florida, Arizona, Villanova, & Louisville with Louisville over Florida in the final to repeat as champs...
SMU is a national title contender next year though with Mudiay in. They have a chance to be scary good.
Accurate.
I'm a little biased, but I'm a big Michigan State fan. I can't wait until they beat LOLUVA and head to the final four.
Either way it shows how ridiculous the Automatic Qualifiers are to get a tournament of the Top 68 teams. 32 of the 68 teams get in by way of automatic qualifiers. 13-19 Cal Poly gets in and SMU at 23-8 stays home. They need to either reevaluate what is Division I college basketball or change the Automatic Qualifiers.
Baseball was also down 10-2 in the first game of the doubleheader on Saturday. Epic comeback!
Although that may be the norm for a NASCAR race, I doubt that will be the case for a football game. I could be wrong, but I wouldn't expect to see anything that isn't PG. I'm sure there it is expected that many families will be in attendance.
Might there be one more football player looking to walk on for some BBall next year: Terrell Edmunds helps his team win the state title by scoring 14 points. The three Edmunds scored 29 all together. All the Edmundes for Basketball.
@T_Babyy6 congratulations on dan river winning their first ever state basketball title and you being apart of it. #hokienation #Hokies— Tracy Lee (@TDL4VT) March 17, 2014
No, I remember 10ish years ago one of the Utah schools (Utah or Utah State) was #25 and left out.

If there was one opinion that was unanimous about him, it was what a great guy he was.
