Except a large part of this is about the clock stopping on 1st downs, and the out of bounds clock stoppage differences that make it last longer vs TV time outs (although I hate that red hatted commercial jerk). The NFL is creeping to that long because they take a commercial break after just about anything; scores, fgs, change of possession etc. The college game has been consistent in the time range, they did have some actual effect from making the clock start with the kick rather than the first touching on kick offs, but they did away with that after only 1 year.
yeah, I suppose "cynical" is one way to describe a picture of the fighting gobbler hanging from a noose. . .
Hey! All those videos are great.
One of my ex-marefriends is in one. Cracks me up. Guy tells her he's a director and she falls for it.
Ha! I still get a kick out of Miller Lite commercials. Widemouth cans. Vortex neck bottles. Their entire advertising strategy is to try to get you to drink FASTER FASTER FASTER LOOK HOW FAST YOU CAN DRINK BEER
It really is. Reads like it's wrapped in a little pink bow
As painful as that game was, the '07 season is a mirage to me. We started the season getting blown out by LSU, then there was BCS catastrophe the entire second half of the year (remember, USF was #2 at one point), so for us to not win that year means that we just got caught up in the churn. Hell, I think LSU lost to Kentucky that year (and Arkansas, if memory serves) and still won the MNC.
You're right that we might have been in the mix that year had we finished that game out. But I don't dislike Matt Ryan for that game. I dislike Jeff Jagoffzinsky for that little dance he did, but that's neither here nor there.

If Bucky is as good as advertised, he will get split out wide. Kendrick Holland is also a big receiver.
Smith and Robinson? That's a helluva demo. Robinson went to high school in my home town, same town where we picked up RMFW, Greg Stroman, and, next year, Tim Settle.
Ford's got great speed and decent size, but I still worry about the ability to get off the line and make plays in coverage. My major concern at WR is VT does not have a big, tall WR on it's roster anymore like Coles or Boykin. Nobody is a serious threat in the redzone or at the sticks. Here's my hope, with Malleck healthy, either Hodges or Cline can play some split end or flanker to get some matchup advantages on the outside. In fact, I can see either one playing almost exclusively on the outside with their athleticism. Where's your 3 TE formation Lefty? Time to get creative.
Does the lack of experienced DE depth scare anyone else other than me?
I get very sad and frustrated every time I see a story like this. I spent my entire Ph.D. working on the mechanism of Alzheimer's disease on the molecular level, and even when I think of all that I discovered, I have a sad realization that we still know so little. The scientific community was barking up the wrong tree for the better part of the last 30 years or so (no one's fault, that's just the way it goes) when it comes to Alzheimer's pathology and treatment, but I am glad to say that progress is (seemingly) accelerating. I just wish we could get a full understanding of the disease. Everything is complicated by the fact that dementia (of which there are multiple types, so it is just a blanket term) is not necessarily Alzheimer's, but the only way (at present) to really know is post-mortem, though again, our imaging and diagnostics are getting better.
I'll avoid getting political or too cynical, but I will say that federal funding is a mess right now, despite recent attention to neurodegenerative diseases. Drug companies often don't find such ventures profitable due to the very small odds that they will find something that works, and a "cure" simply doesn't end up making a lot of money. Hence investments from the NIH are crucial at this point, and you'd better believe I bug my legislators continually.
As hollow as it may be, I do wish the Smith family the best as they deal with his illness. Hopefully he will find a way to reconnect with past memories and find those few moments of joy. Until then, we in science will continue to do what we can...
Looks like more good news for Hokie wrestling:

I was a freshman in 03 and we did this as well - pretty much the reason why you became instant best friends with the people in your orientation class. A shining moment for sure for those who have grown up going to VT games!
But what about the students? How do we engage the students to show up early?
At Penn State, they have students waiting to rush the stands when the gate opens, no matter what game it is. We were lucky to have 1/2 the north endzone populated at the time of kickoff. This was not an issue in the 2000's.
If he's walking around at 240 as a junior in high school, I would seriously doubt that he'll stay around that weight over the next 5 years or so. You don't even see NFL linebackers (in 4-3 schemes) at 260+, which is where he could easily end up in college.
I'm excited for the reload.
We went with a variety of different QBs so our ability to pick and choose who works best with the techniques and abilities that develop and the targeting options for the QBs.
He's right in that the injuries early hurt us, the number of Freshmen that were asked to step up, and did develop as the season went on. New TE, fullback, receivers, LT, RB. Some real good things started to happen as the season progressed but the pressure that was put on them, because of the limits that stood out.
the lack of the long ball didn't let us stretch defenses.
Guys like this will make the run game better by stretching the opposing D. Edmunds will be better because of these types of guys. Add in a group of TEs that look good and it'll help out this guy. Add in the Tes and this guy and Sanford and slot receivers get more opportunities. Make the defense cover multiple threats and do it honestly and they can't do things like stack the box.
Ah, I'm too excited to type coherently.
doesn't need to be a freak, just talented. It'd be nice to have some NFL size in the Mike or Backer position.
Ekenam and Williams - Ekenam will lead in sacks and Williams will lead in tackles in 2014. Just my guesses.
Let us never mention Matt Ryan's name again. That 07 Season is just so painful because it's as close as we came to a 2nd national title shot as we've had and it was blown by his BS.
this is just too funny!
Wyatt Teller <ducks >
I have never dealt with anyone that has dementia but I would be hard pressed to go out like this. This article really hit home for me though because Coach Smith was a guest coach at the basketball camp I went to at the Naval Academy back in the late eighties. I remember him and David Robinson demonstrating how to correctly run a pick and roll drill they were showing us. Saddens me to think that such a great basketball mind has been overtaken by this. Pat Summit on the women's side is another great mind lost to this kind of disease.
I'm thinking RVD. He was in position to be our Whip last year and got hurt. I think he will be a player out there. We don't have that nickel guy we had last year in Ke. Fuller and it showed when Kyle got hurt and Kendall moved to corner.
The devil's advocate to that is Chuck Clarke at the nickel spot. He could step up and play better and be that guy this year.

Hey, when you're drinking crappy beer you want to down that shit as fast as possible so that you get buzzed enough to not notice. At least they're adding something to provide a better drinking experience, even if it is getting it over with faster.
Coors just insults my intelligence now, "Don't like warm beer? Did you know you can COOL THAT SHIT DOWN?! No really! You can make it cold!"
