I believe that was his nickname. Back when Eddie was in school, he was often over at the Beamer's place and made close friends with Cheryl and the family. So he started being called Eddie Beamer by the players.

EDIT: I found the source to where I learned about this nickname. It was an article the CT ran a year ago about Cheryl Beamer.

That mothering instinct translated beyond her family, when she took care of explosive wide receiver and punt returner for Virginia Tech Eddie Royal after a dangerous leg injury.

We actually brought Eddie into our house to stay for a couple of days, Cheryl said.

Because of the nature of his injury, his leg was wrapped so big that even with the assistance of crutches, he would have had difficulty making it up the stairs.

Our bedrooms downstairs, so we let him stay in our room, Cheryl said. You would have never known he was in the house. He was the sweetest little thing. He was so quiet he didnt want to bother me.

From this attention, some of Royals teammates decided to give him a new nickname: Eddie Beamer.

The Eddie Beamer deal started when Coach Beamer dropped me off at the dorms to pick up my books after I had surgery on my leg, Royal wrote in an email. A few guys just happened to see that going on. The word spread around, and next thing you know, there were pictures all over the locker room of the Beamer family picture but with my face cut out and placed over Shane's. I thought it was pretty funny.

The name wasnt just restricted to Blacksburg, as it found its way to Denver with Royal where he played from 2008 to 2012 as the same family picture showed up in the team locker room all these years later.

Actually, I think they believe the football team exists until the end of that squeaker of a win against Richmond, and then it's basketball preseason.

There's actually an ex...CNN? Reporter... guy by the name o'brien I believe, that recently had to have his arm amputated because of compartment syndrome

I considered waiting on this until after the last game of the season (but the mental process struck me late last night and I ran with it).

I also would say I don't really think it's that high of a horse. Each of us has their own standard for what we find acceptable and certainly Pearl recruited, and interacted with his teams in a lot of grey areas to flat out unacceptable areas by NCAA regulations. I can only say that I'd like to believe when you make mistakes that so heavily affect your career and your chosen profession if/when you are given a second chance it would be a focus of his to ensure he stays well within the lines.

Virginia Tech I think does proudly represent the fact that we do things the right way, I wouldn't want a coach that wouldn't do his best to be that. I also think that with a new leadership in the AD's office it might not be a bad idea to take a chance on some talent with some safe guards in the contract to help protect the school. I can't imagine coming off a show-cause situation it would be unreasonable to build buyouts and outs for early termination tied to a failure to do it the right way (NCAA Violations, Ethical Violations etc).

I can understand and respect the side of the table that doesn't want any association with that though. It is a fair point and it is certainly something Whitock would need to consider. It would not surprise me if it removed him from consideration entirely either (if he would be considered at all should JJ not be retained). I know you are not alone in the Hokie fan base when it comes to that opinion.

OK, we both have our opinions and you experienced some B-ball success at UT that you never saw at VT. I get that. I experienced B-ball success at VT back in the early 80s. I just don't think Pearl's a great choice going forward.

It wont really matter much anyway; Beamer, Bud, and Loeffler will have a new coach to torment after this year anyway.
