I respect your opinion and experiences around Pearl but I have to hope that Whit stays far far away from him as a coaching candidate. As mentioned above I wrote a pretty in depth column on potential coaches, all of whom I would rather see us go after. I would prefer to see JJ replaced but don't see that happening right now. Whit is going to want to put a few more big wins under his belt before taking on the
challenge of finding a new coach on a limited budget.
Bottom line for me on Pearl is I don't want to be standing around wondering when the other shoe will drop.
I also agree with the above comment about Gregg Marshall being a ship that has sailed. When you coach a team to a final four and then follow it up with the first undefeated regular season in over a decade you are either staying put or like Shaka a few years ago, going to have the pick of any opening you want.
none of those were horrible ... see matt ryan 2 min drill and any season opener or bowl game sean glennon ever played in then you will know pain.
Good point. Unless Marshall puts on about 20 pounds of solid muscle-weight, he's never going to be anything more than a situational DT at 257.

Oh man, the number of commercial breaks in an NFL game kills it for me. There is one such situation that still irks me to this day. I actually wrote a blog post about it at the time (hahahah...remember those?).
This is what I dislike most about trying to watch a football game. Today, I was watching the Dallas/Green Bay game and I witnessed something that was borderline absurd.
As the 1st Quarter was coming to a close, Green Bay completed a pass on a 3rd down play that gave them a first down. Since the quarter came to a close, they went to commercial.
During the break, Dallas challenged the play and the catch was then ruled incomplete. The officials put :20 seconds back on the clock and Green Bay was forced to punt. After the punt, they went to commercial again after the change of possession.
After the second commercial break, Dallas ran a first down play which ran down the remaining time in the quarter, which means they went back to commercial again.
So, in the span of 20 seconds on the game clock, they showed 3 sets of television commercials. I can only take the stupidity of cold-activated Coors Light bottles or Miller-Lite trying to convince me that their shitty beer tastes good for so long.

That first quarter against Duke in 2012 was the quietest I've ever heard Lane Stadium, just stunned silence from everyone there. It was astonishing. The '09 Bama game I was in Atlanta for, but having been scammed on a ticket I just drank most of that game away, and try not to count it among my experiences. The Cincy game was awful because it was a mental mistake from one of our all time best defenders that cost us the game at the end (even though there were so many chances for that game to be a Cincy blow out).
Every time I see one play - commercial - kickoff - commercial, I want to kick a baby.
Most of the rugby rulebook is complex partly because it's so subjective. Different refs can have different interpretations of "ball out" for example.
I'd actually really like to do that at some point, just watch the game with a 4 year old who is interested but doesn't know the game at all. Sounds fun.
The 2 minute warning exists for 2 key reasons in the NFL: They have a clock that runs more often than in the NCAA (so it's more valuable at the end of the game to create a stoppage), and they want more set times for commercials (you'd want to sell ad space following that 2 minute warning as its a potentially more valuable break than some of the other ones, captive audience at the end of the half/game). So I'm not really in favor of bringing it down to the NCAA level. I appreciate the fewer TV breaks in the game and that's an aspect of the NFL I don't want emulated in the NCAA model.
I was there for '10 Boise, '10 JMU, '12 Cincy, and '12 Duke. Unfortunately its the Boise and Cincy games that stick out in my mind (JMU has been locked out).'08 ECU and '09 Bama are also stuck in there...

It was a joke I made after the first 2 games of the 2010 season where we lost to Boise and JMU. The joke being we are frequently the cHokies and don't show up in big spots/lose OoC games in the spot light. I've been in attendance for Beamer's 2 biggest come backs (2010 NCSU, 2012 Duke), but I've also been in attendance at 2 of our biggest choke jobs in OoC spots (2010 Boise St, 2012 Cincy). So it's just kind of a cynical poke at our reputation in the national media.
I sense that Marshall's role could change once the freshmen arrive, but VT's hurting for DTs this spring. That's why I think they're starting him here for the time being.

it's only complex because we didn't grow up with it. same with cricket. i'm guessing the rugby rule book is actually much thinner than the American Football rule book...
i never thought football was that complex until i had to answer the questions of a child learning the game from the age of ~4 on...he gets it now (he's 7) for the most part, mostly from his own reading and TV watching, but, man, some of the questions he asked made me rethink the game of football completely!
FWIW, that guy's bigger than most of our defensive ends right now. No way he'd stay at LB unless he has some freaky Clowney-like athleticism to carry that weight all over the field.
Personally, I'm quite alright with there being (sometimes vastly) different rules for the NFL and college.
I'd say most of the differences are based on the fact that we can reasonably expect more from professionals than from amateur athletes. For example, it's much easier to get 1 foot down than 2 to make a catch. Also, in regards to OT rules, you can reasonably expect an NFL team to drive the length of the field in one shot, but maybe not a college offense.
Besides, I enjoy that there are different "flavors" of football. I like that college football is its own unique sport with a very distinct viewing experience and the NFL has its own unique viewing experience. Spice o' life, ya know? I'm not saying a universal governing body couldn't be good for the sport, I'm just perfectly happy (for the most part) with the way things are now.
Side note: If you really want a complex sport, watch a rugby game and try to guess what all the penalties are.
My brother was a defensive sleeper. If you tried to wake him up from a nap, he woke up punching. Hmmm...maybe that makes him an offensive sleeper.
