And the coaching staff knows they have the tools and personnel to solve the few issues he has. No recruit will have everything. This kid will be a contributor and help other guys focus on their trade skill set. Win-Win!

Frank Beamer cited Marshall as being among Virginia's best players when he signed in 2011. Everyone knows how thin Tech is at DT, Marhsall could give the Hokies a more legitimate two-deep.
yeah, i think a stand-along WatchESPN subscription would easily cost $50/mo to justify Disney abandoning their carriage bundles. they may try to "bundle" you via streaming, too. stand-alone Disney Subscription (include the multiple Disney channels) would be $20, but it would only be $5 to add it to your $50 ESPN bundle (or only $35 to add ESPN to your Disney subscription). cord cutters who watch sports won't save money in the long run, it will all wash out to be roughly equal...
I hope this strength translates to some harder runs. he has always had speed but he hasn't been able to break that first tackle his career so far. Arm tackles brought him down before.
ESPN wouldn't lose money, but they are owned by ABC/Disney, who would lose money. ABC/Disney/ESPN/other channels are 'sold' to the cable providers as one package. If viewers were able to pay for ESPN individually, ABC/Disney/other package channels are available to a lower amount of viewers, thus they are a less desirable destinations for advertisements, thus advertisers will pay less to advertise on those channels, thus less money is made.

Some good analysis, but I think your conclusion that he is the best choice is a bit clouded in subjectivity.
I wouldn't touch Pearl with a 10 ft pole, and I don't think Whit will either. There are other coaches that we could get that can elevate VT as well as him.

Love this, its all on the QB to find the Open man based off of matchups and space. he stresses them to get through their reads and then sling it. I have a big hunch that Brewer will shock us all. But honestly I would love to see a so called Pocket Passer with escape ability more than anything else.
We have the skilled players now, we have the playbook/coaches we have 3 TE's one of them is 8'3 and then we have Wang and Chung. Heck we even have a #4thdownQB that plays LB. It's time to put it all together in spring and come out with some Swag.
In general, i think there needs to be an American Football Organization that oversees Professional and Amateur Football rules and tries to make them more universal. the various rule differences between the collegiate and professional football leagues are getting worse, not better, every year. as a fan, it's frustrating. this would only be for on field rules. NFL and NCAA and various conferences, etc could still make their own organizational and disciplinary rules, etc.
some basics:
1 set of hashmarks
same clock rules (if it's allowing for too many plays for college, play a 48 minute game instead of 60 minutes)
same rules, same penalties for breaking rules (pass interference and feet in bounds for a catch jump to mind)
same OT rules (not advocating for one over the other, just keep them the same)
i have grown up with it, and don't know any better, so i can go back and forth without too much headache (other than new rules every season which take a few weeks to get used to), but for new fans or very casual fans such as my wife and kids, it's hard for them to understand why the rules of the same game are so much different. it just seems it would be in the best interest of growing the sport (i know it's already massive, but the NFL has concerns about their future with all of this injury stuff) to make it easier for kids and casual fans to follow. it's already the most complex sport out there, no need to make it harder to learn than it already is.
also, an outside organization protecting the game seems like a much better idea than asking the guy hired by 32 billionaires to make them richer to protect the game while ALSO protecting those 32 owners' pockets. that organization may actually put effort into growing the GAME globally, as opposed to the NFL trying to grow the NFL globally...

Great write-up and I think you make a lot of solid, well thought-out points. I will save the retain/fire JJ for the end of the season, but want to address the Bruce Pearl (and Gregg Marshall) calls, briefly.
I don't want Whit to pursue either Pearl or Marshall, plain and simple. Forgive me for my high horse, but I feel like the University (and everyone associated with it) prides themselves on running a clean, honorable department. In a nation full of cheaters, bag men, spirit girls and fake classes, we continue to set the standard for how to run a program and an athletic department, plain and simple. Go read Gregg Easterbrook's book.
I want to win a National Championship as much as the next guy, but I refuse to donate money to a school that wins dirty. Bruce Pearl is the antithesis of Coach Beamer. Though he is a gamer; an intense teacher and successful recruiter; and a winner, he went out drinking with high school recruits and he consciously and regularly stepped outside the rules of the NCAA. I love him as a coach - seriously, the dude can coach his tail off - but I think we are all jaded by the media's love affair with him over the past few years. As some readers know, I am an avid Bill King listener, and being based in Nashville, Bill brings Bruce onto the program weekly. While Bill talks about how great a guy Bruce is, being a good radio guy and being the spokesman for your program are two different things. While I would love to see Bruce rockin' a burnt orange blazer courtside, I would do so awaiting the inevitable news story about some impropriety.
As for Gregg Marshall:
- With his squad's undefeated season, I question whether we can afford him or if he would want to come to Blacksburg, regardless of the fact that he is a Cave Spring grad. If he wasn't interested last season, its unlikely he would be this off-season with his stock so high.
- He is a Seth Greenberg re-boot. Strong personality, not the most like-able character in the nation. Why the hell would we want to go through that again? Just because Weaver is gone doesn't mean Whit didn't do his research. No thanks.
I just got done reading all about compartment syndrome. Aparently, it can be life-threatening. It is often more painful than the injury that caused it, and sometimes requires amputation.

Exactly. My wife wanted to cancel cable before i left on deployment to save money and to try out other options. An HD OTA antenna works great for local channels and then have Amazon Instant Video and Hulu. But that leaves a gap in ESPN for college football. I don't think paying for individual channels will ever happen sadly, but i'd pay $20 a month to access all the ESPNs so it's not like they'd be losing money but cable contracts probably say otherwise.
I like that they make the players take notes on the play instead of handing out a playbook. I always learned more from teachers who made us take notes than teachers who just handed out powerpoints.
I think this exactly. If they were to adopt a 2 minute warning, they need to adopt a "game clock does not stop on first down".

Good write up. Bruce Pearl & Gregg Marshall are my top to candidates if Whit decides to make a change. I see several hurdles to attaining either of them.
1. Money, both of them would require much more money than we've ever invested in the Basketball coaching staff. Also, Football coaches will probably need a raise before we can spend 2MM+ on a new Basketball coach. This could be mitigated by Whit's ability to raise money.
2. Pearl's relationship with Seth Greenberg. Everybody has their opinion about whether Seth should've been fired, but no one can argue that we didn't botch that process. They've worked together at ESPN for the last two years and I'm sure they've swapped stories. This could be mitigated by Whit's ability to sell him on the new regime, but that could be difficult with Weaver still on the payroll for a few more years.
3. James Johnson. I am of the opinion that JJ will get another year. I don't forsee him getting fired so soon into Whit's tenure. This can't really be mitigated. If we keep JJ, we won't land Pearl or Marshall. I'd put money on both of them having a new job come very soon.
