That's what I was afraid of :/ The only other woodworking project I've done was refurbishing an electric guitar several years ago and I used a polyurethane finish for that. I had a hunch it'd be too slick for corn hole. Thanks for the info!

what's fun about that is i chose mine because a) carl pilkington is hilarious, b) a couple of friends of mine starting calling me "the american carl pilkington" a while back, and c) when shown a pic of carl pilkington my 2 y/o daughter exclaimed "daddy! daddy! daddy!" so yeah i got that going for me.

I did not. I just used a high gloss acrylic paint from Lowes. We used several coats of paint though. It could still use a little touch-up but they work pretty well. The first few times we used them the bags stuck too well for two reasons; The board was tacky and the bags were brand new (I bought them, didn't make them) and needed to be broken in. After several uses it became more challenging. Over time the bags got broken in and a layer of dust settled on the boards making them more slick. I had a friend who made some boards and they put polyurethane on them and they're way way too slick

This was rubbing me wrong at first as I am a big JC believer, but as you said I think he's more of a N' S' kind of a guy and with some added weight/muscle and better blocking I have every confidence in him. As such a turkey leg for you sir.

Not exactly Hokie "stuff" per se, but there's a family photo album of me running through the Lane Stadium tunnel and getting a tour of the Merryman Center when I was about 9 or so. At the time CFB lived next door to us, before he moved into the Ellett Valley. My memory is kinda fuzzy but I assume he had something to do with arranging that.

Did you use any varnish or polyurethane? It seems like some kind of protective coating would be a good idea, but I was kind of worried polyurethane would make them too slick.

Trevor Knight comes to mind as well. Also Andrew Luck, Kellen Moore, Aaron Murray, Brett Hundley, Taylor Martinez, and Marcus Mariota. Quite a few red-shirt freshmen QB's have had some success recently. There is a huge drop off when you look at true freshmen QBs, though. The most successful true freshman QB in the BCS era I can find is Jeff Godfrey (UCF, 2010). From major conferences, Terrelle Pryor had a decent freshman season, as did Matt Barkley (and the 2009 USC offense was laoded), but neither put up eye-popping numbers. Tryod and RGIII could also be in that discussion. Not many others, though.

Edit: A few notable omissions: Case Keenum and Teddy Bridgewater were also guys who were able to have some success as true freshmen. Colt McCoy would be another guy in the "really-good-red-shirt-freshman-season" club. I'm sure there are others I'm forgetting. Still, very few guys have been able to play well as true freshman. It's a very short list, with most being 5-star, blue-chip prospects who ended up on NFL rosters. It seems having that one red-shirt year before being thrown in the deep end makes a huge difference. I think all three of the 2014 QB commits are capable of being great players for us, but if one of them starts this year, I will probably dookie a shooter.

I'd say probably just that they're confident they'll get it done and they're gonna work their collective tails off to win.

My most favorite Hokie gear is a piece of paper. That piece of paper states that I was granted a degree from the greatest University in history. I am so proud to call myself a graduate of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. It is such an amazing place and I am honored to have had the opportunity to attend it. It is a place that has instilled so much pride in everyone that is associated with it. You could be walking down the streets of Philadelphia and see someone with a VT proudly displayed know that there is a connection, not only with that person but with the town in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains that we both called home. I am so honored to have joined such a loving and welcoming community.

Sometimes, things just don't work out too well. Last year, the mindset wasn't the problem, the team was just limited by talent and technique problems that we just couldn't overcome. I remember Bruce Taylor talking during the 2012 season about how he was disappointed because the players-only meetings he called didn't have the same effect (wins) as the ones Tyrod & co called 2 years earlier. It wasn't that he was a bad leader, the team was just too limited in other areas for his leadership to make much of a difference. So no, I don't think there was anything necessarily lacking in the mindset last year, but it's awesome that the guys know that 8-5 is unacceptable and are determined to make this year special. It's a very good start, and it's awesome to see some leadership emerging early.
