i would hope our coaches aren't blindly filling the depth chart based off online recruiting profiles. i could see experience and seniority influencing the pecking order, but not "stars" that vary from service to service and don't take scheme into account.

Sorry, just got confused there for a second. In all seriousness, my thought process has always been let's see what happens during spring ball and practices. If Leal plays well enough, he deserves to start, and will. If another QB that we have plays better, then I think they should start. The positive here is that we have plenty of good candidates, and I think that includes Leal. So long as having all these good options translates to wins come the fall, I'm happy.

Last time they played Canada won because of a very shady allowed goal after the play had been blown dead. Ended up being the deciding margin.
French just said he thought he was "maybe 260." That's pretty light, but probably comparable to what Baron played at last year.

And for those that aren't watching, the Women's team is also playing the state of Canadia for the Gold. last time they played they got into a huge fight. love it

Both Hopkins and Maddy know that if their guard takes a certain step, they are running to a spot, not the ball. Once they get to that spot, if they can make the tackle, fantastic. But, they can't lose control of that gap or else they open up holes. This requirement lends itself to an archetype of a defensive lineman that isn't always popular with recruiting services. You need a defensive tackle that tends to be shorter and shaped like a fire hydrant to work under the reach blocks of those 6-4 type guards that scouts covet. They must be smart and selfless to understand their keys and to resist their instinct to chase the football. They must move well laterally, and then have tremendous lower body strength to resist being driven across the gap once they have arrived (being short helps gain leverage here as well).

These offseason write ups sure do take some of the sting off the football-free weekends...but I am so ready for more football now!

A big question I have is development though. How much has he developed being a back up? How much will the new QBs have developed by the time August rolls around? Being pegged a back up for 3 years, how much has Leal gone through the motions rather than bust his ass to grow as a player vs the high school guys coming in knowing they have a chance to play come fall and working like there is no tomorrow. Just some thoughts.
