I'm chalking it up to inexperience. People can easily be baited by a reporter's question. Someone like Beamer has practiced many years of coachspeak. JJ hasn't. If he had generalized and just said, "I've got a couple of young guys simply out-performing or out-hustling my seniors," we wouldn't be here. Unfortunately, he named some specific guys and shouldn't have. Was it wrong? Yep, sure was. Was it malicious? Only JJ knows. Given that every other story I've heard about him speaks to his good character and care for his players, I'm willing to let this slide and hope that it's a moment where he can learn about how to interact with the media.

In Weavers defense, Hughes told him not to bother matching the contract. I think in terms of baseball, Oklahoma is a much better opportunity than VT. I was very disappointed he left as well, but this particular case sounded like one where he was gone regardless of how much money we threw at him.

We lost Coach Hughes after the Hokies great year to Oklahoma-by reports he made $157,000 his last year at VT. Oklahoma hired him to replace their coach who left for Auburn-that coach was making $350,000+ and was reported to get a contract at Auburn for salary plus incentives to total $650,000+

I hope there is someone down in Blacksburg that can give us updates on the baseball team. I love baseball. I still got that itch for it since my high school playing days ended.

i always wanted one of those 'time to go to work' shirts with the lunchpail on them. i think they're not just a good orange effect shirt but a classic virginia tech shirt period, and they were only produced that season. you guys should bring that one back.
