Notre Dame to hire Brian VanGorder as their new Defensive Coordinator.

The simple answer is because the higher rated players tend to be better players. Yes, they whiff on guys but they get it right quite a bit, and generally the teams with the higher rated recruits win more games, and the higher rated recruits get drafted more often (which convinces more highly rated recruits to come to that school).

They had Facyson as a 3-star and may have undersold him. They also had Kendall Fuller as a 5 star and it looks like they got that right. Elite talent is a nice thing to have.

I wasn't suggesting a CJ.... But how can it be lol that we are landing top "prospects" that have offers from the major players like Florida, penn st, tOSU, etc vs. The players we have now that we had to settle for. Knowles was a track star that barely played football, Stanford was a last mjnute find after Lockhart decommitted, etc. and the results have been two subpar years. Are we surprised that our O struggled? I could see Harrison and Phillips contributing in September. We also have highly rated guys that havnt helped yet (Caleb for example). We've never had a 5* that wasn't a star at VT. I Ford would be a nice surprise if it happened as well.

That's ridiculous. Mike London saves his timeouts in hopes that they will carry over to the next game.

Frank Beamer's new book is an interesting read, especially on this topic. There's a chapter called "How many stars? Who cares?" where he breaks down the state of recruiting and what he likes and hates about it. One of the things he mentions is that kids suddenly get more stars when traditional power programs (ND, Michigan, etc) offer them, so he really doesn't believe in the star rankings. He says many times over that he first and foremost wants good people, who also happen to be good football players, not ego-driven kids who think it's all about them. I think that's what a lot of these recruiting sites and services are doing, inflating the egos of kids and trying to drive the media narrative. I trust the fact that the staff has done proper film evaluation and is getting good players. We've made offers to "top" recruits in the past but haven't landed them. Whatever the current staff is doing is starting to catch on, and we're reeling in a few more targets than usual. Let's just hope they live up to their reputations on (and off) the field.

There will always be an asterisk by your name in the Hall of Turkey Legs...

I think the term is from "Zach n Miri make a porno", a movie I found entertaining

I can understand the point of a reasonable CJ for roping in 7 rivals four-stars with the potential for 2 more.

However, here's my issue: Why do we care what these people think? These are the same guys who said Peter Lalich would make a better collegiate and professional quarterback than Russell Wilson. These are the same guys who rated Kyle Fuller, Luther Maddy, Antone Exum, James Gayle and Brandon Facyson as 3-stars or worse. These guys aren't fortune tellers, they're just handicapping the field. For christ's sake Ike Whitaker and Sean Glennon were four-stars once upon a time.

At this point, I'd rather just have French look over a prospect's tape and tell me if I should be excited or not that he's coming to VT because that's the only opinion I trust these days.

That's true, those guys are successfully recruiting the players. Stinespring is the lead recruiter on a few as well, but more importantly he is orchestrating the recruiting effort, putting Grimes, Gray, Moorehead, S. Beamer, Loeffler in a position to be successful when recruiting prospects.

The shift in our recruiting strategy implemented last winter has been pretty dramatic when compared to years past, that is due to a couple key factors IMO.
1) Stinespring being RC and
2) certain coaches who favored the previous methods no longer being on staff who were replaced with coaches with experience recruiting for a top SEC program

OH GOD JOE IT'S BEAUTIFUL EVEN ON MY PHONE
