I will second Cannon (you have to see Haystack Rock which really is impressive). My wife actually loves Seaside which is up the coast a bit from Cannon. It is older and very laid back. If you go that far may as well run on up to Astoria and cross the bridge there into Washington.

Wasn't the thing when I was there. It was the Farmhouse for parent visits or a date or the Hokie House with the buds, basically. Mike's pissed us off for closing in the summer when the students were gone and we owned the town for a while, so we kinda quit going there. When I was a rat, the upperclassmen all loved the Golden Gobbler, but I was too young and sans vehicle for that place. I honestly don't think I ever went to the Homeplace. As a student on the GI Bill, I was way too poor to afford that or anything other than cheap.

When I bought my house, we had an almost whole house generator. Ran all but the heat pump and the oven, for some reason. We never really needed it in the 13+ years we've been here so when it died on us last year, we decided to forgo the expense and let 'er die. We plan on selling soon, and we're not worried about trying to enhance the property. Hope it doesn't bite us on the butt in this one, but our location so close to the Bay keeps a lot of the more egregious stuff being a problem. The water in the Bay actually keeps us warmer in winter and cooler in summer. That said, we're on the line between not great and not good, but will always figure bad is possible. Frozen pipes is the worry with the cold air coming, but we live right across the street from the local convalescent home and only a block away from "downtown" Mathews, with the cop shop and fire dept. there, so power tends to be quickly restored here locally, but if the baaaadddd stuff disrupts the regional stuff, we might be sleeping in the car or something. Got beer, plenty of don't have to cook stuff, roasting a chicken as we speak and made a batch of brownies this morning. Birds are fed and radio is working for the Hokies since our local CW refuses to show live sports through Dish and we get no reception over the air. As set as I can be, I guess.

I can personally recommend a few. Two really good sandwich shops would be North Shore Deli (Mongoose Junction) and Sam & Jack's Deli (above Starfish Market).

High Tide and The Beach Bar are good scenes in Cruz Bay to get a meal and enjoy some drinks. We tend to always hit The Beach Bar a couple of times each trip. Have had good meals also at 1864 (Mongoose Junction).

As others have mentioned Skinny Legs (Coral Bay side) is popular.

As far as beaches start with the North Shore Beaches and then expand out as time allows. If you absorb the drive and head to the east end our favorite spot there is Hansen Bay. It is privately owned but not crowded. If same as last year they just ask for a donation. Really nice little setup on that side of the island, but it is a bit of a drive as far as drives on St. John go.

Edit: Wifey just reminded me the other day of maybe our favorite spot to get a burger and some drinks. That would be the Windmill Bar which has a lot of live music. We took in the VI Jam Fest there last year and plan on doing so again this year. Really fun place.

Between this and the Duke QB who just wants his NIL contract he signed with Duke to just go away, I'm starting to really root hard against the athletes in this current era.

The pendulum swung HARD and seriously overcorrected to the point where the NCAA needs to be given actual authority to regulate, and come down hard with the hammer to reign it under control

I have never been able to squeeze into Woodys. Every time I have been by it has been packed.

I would add Francis to the North Shore can't miss beach list. One of our favorites.

Maybe, but they'd been shocking up those fish for many years, for trade up north for stripers and walleye. And we're not talking a slow decline, either. One year they're there, two years later you'd have to fish for weeks to find one white bass. The other fish most definitely benefitted from the removal of an incredible amount of predator fish, but I still just don't understand the total collapse.

I would add the Bonneville Dam on the Columbia River to the list if you are into that kind of thing.

There is a manual switch (a lever, actually) on the side of the panel box the generator is wired into that will shut off the outside feed, to prevent backfeeding into the grid. I could do that. But is there anything else I could look for to see if there is an automatic start to the generator, before I shut off power to the whole house?

I'm in Davidson. We also have gas fire places with battery backup ignition and a gas stove top so I am sure we will be fine. My basement full of snakes I keep are another story. I think I have solid plan in place to keep them warm enough for a few days but I'm definitely investing in a generator when they are back in stock. I'd love it if all these forecasts bust and we just get rain. Unfortunately, it doesn't sound like that will happen.
