I was only considering games played in the last ten years as to explore "modern" results. That's why I didn't even mention Tech's 3-0 record against Appalachian State from 1979-82. I think we can both agree college football in the 70's and 80's is a little bit different than the game played today.

For those who are interested App State is 7-13-1 against Wake Forest. They last beat them 20-16 in 2000.

Uh....I think you need to do some more research. I was at App in the 70's when we knocked off, Wake Forest, ECU, and South Carolina in the same season.....Not to mention our heated rivalry with Wake which THEY ended because they got tired of App beating them. Look it up. App State has eight wins over FBS teams...You may be, to quote The Beatles...NUMBER NINE...NUMBER NINE.......

Great points jpcvt. Though I think we could beat many of these teams after recruiting on their level.

We can speculate all day over this but the facts are the facts and history is huge here: even though geographically and academically Virginia Tech is a perfect fit for the ACC (Southeast, Top 20-30 "state" school depending on what review you look at), we had to fight like hell and have state congressional and gubernatorial intervention to get into the Conference. After all of that UVA and VT will probably be tied at the hip with one another and we all know UVA is never leaving the ACC for the SEC (academically and ideologically it makes no sense for them and we won't for the factors listed above).

THOUGH in the odd chance it does happen my feelings would be "hit or miss." Other teams would also vacate the ACC and that has to be taken into account. To be honest it would take probably 3-5 years to be a real contender in the SEC East (UF, FSU, Miami, USCe, Clemson, Georgia, GT and others would make it tough) though I think we would have an over .500 Conference record EVERY SINGLE YEAR unlike UG or Miami. If we could win the SEC East once every three to five years with an SEC Championship 1-2 times in that cycle (which usually means NCG berth) then I would be OK with it. Also Pre MV7 Hokie makes a great point- Virginia would be closed off to all except Virginia Tech...UVA Football would suffer greatly from our departure to the SEC. Here is the VT pitch:

Hey ____________________. You want to play SEC Football and go to a top 65 school? Want to play in the NFL? Come to Virginia Tech where we will consistently challenge for championships. NFL pedigree production (See Big East and ACC days for reference: D. Hall, Jimmy Williams, Michael Vick, Lee Suggs, Kevin Jones, Ryan Williams, Darren Evans, Josh Morgan, Josh Hyman, Eddie Royal, etc.) Oh and if we win the SEC then we go to the National Championship Game to destroy the winner of ANY other conference. Think about it: great education, best football in the land, what's not to love? Did I mention the National Championship game berths and NFL production from VT and the SEC?

UVA/ACC- Hello sir. Do you want to go to a top 15 school? Do you want to "win" Orange Bowl Championships? Do you want to play in the former power known as the ACC? Though we lost VT, FSU, Miami, GT, Clemson and Boston College (who would bolt either back to Big East or to the Big Ten) we still provide some stiff competition in Football though it will be only known as a Basketball Confer....wait, I quit.

Would it be cool to be in the SEC? Sure. But realistically what would be our chances of winning it once every 1-2 years as it stands now in the ACC? Slim to none with slim walking out the door. We would be incredibly fortunate just to compete on the level mentioned earlier. This isn't saying VT has a bad program but that there would be so much talent in the SEC that we may get lost in the shuffle, if you will.

Honestly though as an ACC VT grad ('04-'08) and fan I am perfectly content in the ACC and would love to see it expand once more to include WVU, Pitt, Rutgers, and East Carolina much like The Extra Point brought up. The prestige of the Conference outside of football is still huge. Pitt would be great in all areas (FB/BB/Academics), WVU brings football, Rutgers is ok at sports but has a tremendous reputation in the northeast amongst state universities (live in NYC- half the damn city went to the New Brunswick campus!) and brings with it the NYC media market (SNY would automatically switch to the ACC from the Big East and may actually force Syracuse to follow as well. YES would still be Big Ten due to Penn State alliances but who cares...MSG Network would also cover ACC and that's the biggest sports network in the city). WE, along with FSU, Miami, Clemson and GT need to make the Conference a power and influence other schools to join not leave for the greener pastures of the SEC. One final note- College Football, like life, is cyclical. At some point the SEC WILL go through a pronounced dry spell and the ACC needs to be there to capitalize.

Though I love baseball this family value package reminds me of the val packs for minor league baseball teams.

When UNC hired Butch I knew that it wouldn't end well for UNC, a guy from the U and the NFL is never going to work at UNC, the Athletic department made the mistake of thinking that the fanbase would go along with anything to get the football program alive again. The timing of this whole thing is what confuses me most, perhaps they didn't want to send an interim head coach as a sacrificial lamb to the media days, maybe the board has been pushing the chancellor to do this for a while and he finally got brave and pulled the trigger. But after seeing how UNC supported him through all that has happened, I can't imagine it is anything other than new information (or the threat of new information: Marvin Austin) that made them pick the worst time of year to fire a coach.

We would have to go undefeated in the ACC unless no one else in the country was undefeated. We have had exposure to the SEC fans and I think generally have earned their respect. I would like to know a SEC fan's perspective on the idea. I am not a fan of the SEC since I think it is overhyped. Some teams have very obnoxious fans.

Geographically we would be the most northeastern team, potentially drawing big talent from players wanting to be closer to home in the Northeast, but also drawing more players from the traditional SEC recruiting zones.

There would be a good potential upside, but also growing pains and risks.

I kind of like being in the talk to win the ACC every year. This is what FSU had for many years. No one complained about the weak ACC when they were winning. They eventually won the NC. Is that a bad thing? We would be starting over with a guaranteed tough schedule every year in the SEC.

I think Mr. College Football said it best on Twitter, "Understand that with this announcement, North Carolina has decided to get out of the football business for a while."

Everyone is shocked at the timing of the decision, but it makes sense to me. The received their notice of allegations a month ago, why would they fire him before ACC football kickoff and deal with the questions. After this second black eye Butch had to go, and for UNC to avoid the harshest punishment from the NCAA he had to go before the 2011 season. I still think that even though the UNC administration decided to walk away from the table, the NCAA will ensure they won't be welcomed back for a long time.

I feel bad for the kids who deserve the pity, the ones who did it the right way. Hopefully the NCAA does the right thing and allows them to go where they want without sitting out a year.

This decision coming this close to the beginning of the season is a shock. But I can't say I'm surprised that ths finally happened.

Can't understand what goes through recruit's minds and what they are looking for in a college. A good player could go anywhere and be a star if they work hard and get opportunities. If they are going to the next level they don't have to go a top ten team, they just need to stand out. Now what happens to the opportunities for these players?

Taking a coach's word over the facts doesn't seem like a good decision. BD must be pretty persuasive in saying all the things a recruit wants to hear. What did UNC offer that VT didn't?

Preseason all-whatever teams don't mean a thing to me. I can't consider it an honor because is only a prediction of who may be a big contributor. An honor is for someone who has accomplished something. It is along the lines of the number of stars a high school recruit gets. It is no guarantee of future performance.

very true, recruiting would blow up! Hopefully national recognition/ exposure would increase in the SEC, and maybe some respect. First few seasons would be tough, but that's what was said when we joined the ACC... we have had nothing but 10 win seasons while in the ACC.

Would it be better if we moved to the SEC or added teams like Pitt and WVU to the ACC?

I don't generally agree with the idea, because it's harder to run a classy program in the SEC. Just for conversation's sake, though, the one good thing I can say is that big-time Virginia recruits would immediately stop leaving the state.

The Tackling engine is infintely better than in past years, with now having the possibilty of gang tackles. Already have that custom stadium tune at the beginning for entersnadman, even though it always cuts off like 10 seconds too early...

I'm waiting on Luvtotha9s' roster to come out for ps3, as last year his was spot on, and it porgressed as the season progressed. Feel free to add me on psn, osupahstaro.

C'mon is this really a surprise? After his tenure at Miami? Butch Davis runs a program which bends the rules? I'm shocked! No way an upstanding coach does this??? Though all joking aside what a time to can the HC...great job UNC! Way to set your program back many many years.

Now its one less great recruiter Frankenator has to go against. Also I do NOT feel bad for the student athletes. All signs pointed to something happening with UNC Football over the past COUPLE of years. To blindly accept a coach's feelings who had major issues with the same body (NCAA) concerning major rules violations in the past while coaching at da U. Technological lesson boys and girls (from a history student): use the interweb (ahahaha) to research the coach who will dominate your existence for the next three to five years and see HIS past, beliefs and tendencies...simple Google search should've done to trick to at least plant a seed of questioning in the good ole' noggin! (LET THE FALLOUT BEGIN!!! TO VIRGINIA TECH in terms of the de-commits which I'm sure will soon be coming)

Still surprised how UNC handled the situation though...classy (wow even Heather Dinich and ESPN called you out over timing)? One serious threat in the ACC down maybe GT will fire Johnson and make Groh their HC while UVA hires Stiney???
