Columbus Roll Call

The only thing better than yesterday's outcome is the fact that a few days from now Hokie Nation will be descending on Columbus, Ohio for a prime-time Saturday night match-up versus the Buckeyes. I have been looking forward to making this trip since the game was added to the schedule. When I told my 8 yr-old son that it would just be the two of us, the first thing he said was, "How are we going to tailgate with only two people?" I told him to fear not, we would meet lots of fellow Hokies at his first away game.

With that said, who is making the trip? Will anyone else be on the north side of campus near Ackerman Rd? If any locals are lurking, do you have restaurant recommendations? I have heard good things about Raising Cane's, but surely there's something besides chicken tenders worth trying.

Only 6 more days....

Raising Canes is awesome, as is Thurman's Burgers, the Short North for the younger crowd, North Market if your going up Friday is great.

I'll be there tailgating with two other Hokies and 12 or so anOSU fans. I'm pumped. Go Hokies!

I'll be there with 5 people!

#38-0

I will be there - just me and my wife. No clue where we will tailgate though - wherever we find parking I would guess.

One note - make sure you put your alcoholic beverage of choice in a cup. I have heard from a few buckeyes that the cops are a little strict.

HIDE YOUR ALCOHOL. Tailgated there for two seasons.

I'll be there with some of my buddies at some tailgate somewhere in Columbus.... Not sure where. Penn Del Hokie will be there with me

@CaptKirkVT10

That I will

OSU Fan: "Sit down!"

VT Fan: "I can't, I am not an alumni"

OSU Fan stands up.... "Oh, this is fun!"

I'll be there with a friend! No idea what we're doing or where we're going.

Who are you pulling for?

In Sam Rogers we trust.

Nice, I know that you're a fan of both teams. Good to see that you are a Hokie before Buckeye.

My favorites restaurants are dirty franks on South 4th and the Crest on Indianola. Can't go wrong with either place!
Edited to include skyline which is literally my favorite food in the world

Little Bobby Tables told me my signature was false

Dirty Franks is right next to the 16 bit bar arcade which is a pretty sweet place.

EDIT: Link for those that are interested. http://16-bitbar.com
Parking($) directly across the street.

Turkey leg for and also a resounding second for skyline. only restaurant in the world you can ask your waitress for a 3-way and she won't bat an eye.

Whatever. It was one bad year.

Seasonal Brew means High ABV for football season and standard the rest of the year.

Skyline is the place that I make sure I get to every single time I go back to Cinci, I can demolish the cheese coneys

I'll be there will 4 other people!

I'll be there with at least 7 folks. Excited to get it going.

Hound dogs pizza was really good last time I was there. Dive pizza and beer kinda place.

No lead is substantial.

A fair warning from my total lack of experience with Buckeye fans:

Up here in Big Ten country, the PSU faithful seriously dislike anOSU faithful. I have little experience interacting with Buckeye fans, but the Nittany Lions don't like them because they're the WVU of Big Ten fan bases. They're the typical townies that never went to anOSU but live and die by the team. I've heard that the PSU folks, while disliking the Michigan team prefer the maize and blue fans because, as I've been told, "They're intelligent, not like anOSU fans, which are just classless".

Like I said, no experience with them personally, but that's the vibe around State College. Just FYI

Thanks for the heads up. I've been to Knoxville a few times for the Bama Tennessee games and as a bama fan I'm preparing for a similar experience in Columbus.

@CaptKirkVT10

Tennessee fans are jerk asses?

Nawww

Yeah, Tennessee fans are terrible. I simply commented on one of WCYB's (the Tri-Cities news) facebook posts asking for non-bias coverage of other teams that are pretty local as well after WCYB posted live updates from the UT game all night and I immediately get attacked by a Tennessee fan making some comment about our strength of schedule. I wasn't looking to have a confrontation with someone, I was just wanting more coverage for the Hokies and I got backlash. The joys of living in the Tri-Cities... We played William and Mary, yes, but they played Utah State? While we play Ohio State next week, they play Arkansas State... Ugh, so obnoxious.

I have 3 favorite teams. VT, Kentucky, and whoever is playing Tennessee.

Thanks! I assumed there would be some of that, but hopefully nothing near WVU levels. I have friends from Michigan who have said they would never go near the 'shoe for that exact reason.

What I am interested in seeing is how they react when they realize we're not a pushover opponent.

That's awesome!!!! I LMAO every time I see that. Hopefully there will be some Buckeye fans doing their best impression of that Saturday...

TN_Hokie

I would give my right arm to see a similar gif, but after a victory this time.
I want this game, dammit.

A picture is worth a thousand words. A gif is worth a million.

Uhh...this makes me question my fanhood.

#Let's Go - Hokies

Love this gif as much as anyone, but to be fair, if they'd put a camera on me during the subsequent kick off return, there'd be a gif of me doing the exact same thing circulating on the bama boards.

Not the bagman VT deserves, but the bagman VT needs right now.

Funny you should say that. I've heard the exact opposite from my UM/OSU friends, where PSU is the worst of the conference, so who knows.

Hokies United l Ut Prosim

I can tell you without question there are a bunch of really bad apples. It USED to be that all you'd get from PSU fans was how great Paterno was, how he only would ever do it the right way, and how he was a beacon in an otherwise scumbag-filled sport. Even my neighbor, when I moved in, asked where I went to school. When I told him it was VT, all he had to say was that it was a dirty program.

Of course, the events of a few years ago up here have taken everyone down a peg. And, to be honest, while the situation itself was wretched, the fans' realization of what it was was GLORIOUS.

Haven't heard anything negative about VT since.

I've honestly always wished VT could do home and homes with PSU, never understood why we couldn't make it happen ...especially since Weaver is a PSU grad.

I don't fully believe the "Paterno was ducking VT" argument, and the schools are too similar/close together for it to be anything but awesome.

Hokies United l Ut Prosim

Now it's on the schedule. I don't think Paterno was necessarily ducking VT, but if I understand correctly he definitely kicked the rivalry with Pitt to the curb.

I've only ever heard that from VT fans who were, for whatever reason, convinced that Paterno was scared to play us.

Never really made sense, but I've heard it a lot.

Hokies United l Ut Prosim

I don't think it was that, in particular, so much that in the cases of both Pitt and VT, playing them and losing hurts recruiting in two really big areas: Western PA as well as DC/Maryland, where PSU used to clean up with LJ recruiting.

Thanks - it looks like there is no shortage of good food choices. We are arriving Friday, so we'll at least get to try a couple.

I found a parking map - http://grfx.cstv.com/schools/osu/tickets/pdf/m-footbl-gameday-parking-ma...
It looks like they have good public parking. I am thinking that we will be in the red-shaded lot off Ackerman on Fred Taylor Dr that is near the RV lot.

Will be eating dinner at 7:00 PM Friday night at Cooper's Hawk in Eaton with 2 buckeye buddies. Hope to see Hokies out in force!

Great lot to tailgate in is the one next to medical dr and cannon dr, right next to walking path at the river. Get there early enough and get a spot backing up to the grass.

6C is where my ticket is, but I'm going with friends and may try to get in their section. Anybody know how strict they are about that?

Very, ushers check tickets when entering sections. At least during the 2009-2010 season they did.

my plan for this, since my fianc bought the tickets in two different sections on stub hub somehow, is to print the ticket for the lower section and have her show the same ticket on her phone a few minutes later. this should work and people shouldn't question the two people in orange sitting together.

Whatever. It was one bad year.

Also, I just found out about this VT tailgate that will have free food and booze for Pamplin alumni and their guests at the Ohio Union (south end of campus on High St). Here is the link to register:

http://pampl.in/OSUtailgate

It is an early afternoon affair. Food will be served from 2 to 4 PM.

I just found out that I may end up going with my dad. Super last minute. When I find out if I'm going, I'll post up here where I'll be!

@sthvt

That's awesome, I'm jealous. My dad got his PhD from tOSU and I was born there, so I would love to have taken him, but he's coming back from Germany on Saturday and won't be able to make it. I've already told him to let the Army know that he will be unavailable next September 7th!

Ughhhhh my wife is a Buckeye and we have been planning to attend this game since they announced it. Buuutttt, since our first child is due on the 16th, we figured it might not be the best thing to do. But she recommends Lane Avenue (fitting right?) for tailgating and bars. We will definitely make it next year.

I'll be there and also winging it. Where's a good bar for late 20s-early 30 somethings on Friday night? Also are cabs generally available?

Tons of great bars. I liked Short North and German Village when I lived there. But around campus are a lot of bars also.

Nice. What's a great area to bar hop?

Short North I think. Has bars, pubs, food, tapas bars, street food. Has some "interesting" bars, but plenty of other options. Anywhere on N. High st should get you near a bar.

Does anyone know where away fans generally sit at OSU? I think I'm in section 33b but I was wondering when I ordered tickets.. Either way I'll be cheering loudly for VPI the whole way! Go Hokies.

I'll be there with 3 other Hokies, see you guys inside the Shoe.

Pour some Beer on it

Myself and another Hokie family member will be in attendance. Couldn't wait so we are heading up Thursday (have relatives in Cbus).

@vtscottyb

I will definitely be there with 4 others. The party will be awesome. I'm feeling unusually optimistic about this game. This program is on the verge. An away win vs. a top 5 historical power could push us to the next level.

Fuente puts the "FU" in Futbol

My nephew by marriage is anOSU alum. I am currently plotting my celebratory email to him.

Take the shortest route to the ball and arrive in bad humor.

Will be there, in section 26c. #footballbucketlist

As it turns outI will be up there this weekend as well. I got a wild hair after reading TKP this afternoon and caught up with a college buddy. He lives in Columbus, and had a ticket. Really looking forward to this one. Go Hokies!

Carry Me Back

Look for the Ron Mexico jersey. Might bring it out on Friday night, but might save it for Saturday just to make sure that OSU fans don't try to sully it before gameday.

The Dude Abides

Just got a ticket today, I'll be in town Friday afternoon with 3 other guys, sitting in 6B for the game. Hope to run into some other TKP'ers in town.

"This is just spectacular... These people are losing their mind. This is beautiful." -Mike Patrick

I will be there and also picked up tickets to Cage the Elephant and The Black Keys the night before in the basketball arena. I think I am in section 22A.

Whatever. It was one bad year.

Seasonal Brew means High ABV for football season and standard the rest of the year.

Will be there with a decent contingent of guys (about 10 of us), sitting all over the stadium, but I got mine in A deck on the 40 yard line so pretty freaking pumped. Would love to suggest a bar or two for VT and TKP'ers to take over Friday night...

Tom Tillar is my homeboy...

Agreed. This seems like a go-to sports bar that a lot of folks have mentioned. I will have my 8 year-old son with me, so I won't be throwing down late at night, but I could possibly swing by mid-day on Saturday to catch kickoff for some of the noon games. Maybe Friday night as well depending on when we arrive, as we are driving from Charlotte.

Headed up with a big crew, Friday morning. One of my best friends from Tech's boyfriends is an OSU grad and Saturday is his 30th so we're all making the trek from DC.

Here's a list of places that a friend from high school (who's an OSU grad and lived/worked in Columbus for a few years after) compiled for me:

Schmidts
Jenni's ice cream
Cap City Grand View
Short North
Barrel 44
Surly Girl

I specifically asked her for places that were a better fit for those of us in our mid/late 20s, and we'll be staying at the Spring Hill Suites at OSU and tailgating somewhere around there.

Hokies United l Ut Prosim

Just throwing my two cents in but bar 145 is another cool spot for a slightly more experienced crowd

Little Bobby Tables told me my signature was false

Surly girl is in the Short North and is awesome. All of the Short North is. Jenni's ice cream is also great.

Anyone in the older crowd or bringing kids that will be there during the day Thursday or Friday should go by the North Market. A ton of food all made by locally owned food places inside.

I've gone to school at tOSU since 2010 and I haven't been to any of these places you are all talking about. 4FSS

You have never had a Thurman burger? Or Jennis ice cream? Or gone bar hopping in Short North? Or gone to North Market? Lived in Cbus for 4 years and 3 in Dayton. Only thing I miss about Ohio is food, the people, weather and traffic can go take a flying leap.
