Softball clinches ACC Coastal

The softball team has been really good this. Hope they make some noise in ACC tourney and NCAA's.

I think if they win today (sweep) we win the regular season outright.

We put the K in Kwality

Yep...

Crazy, considering we were picked to finish 10th out of 12 before the season started.

HOKIES!!!!

Can they #winthewholedamnthing ???

UVA is a great place to take a dump.

FSU is going to be a tough out in the ACC, and I rarely bet against Arizona, Texas, Tennessee, or UCLA nationally

Never Forget #1 Overall Seed UVA 54, #64 UMBC 74

Did you mean Oklahoma instead of Texas? Oklahoma, Florida, Alabama, and Washington have combined for 7 titles and 6 runner ups since 2009.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

Our pitching can be really strong, but it'll be our bats that need to do the noise making. When we're hitting, we can light it up in a skinny New York minute. GO HOKIES!!!!!

Not bad for a team picked to finish 10th out of 12.

Have we really never won the regular season before? We won the tournament twice.

Correct. Never won the regular season outright. Even when AT won us the tourney.

Really glad I got tuned in early on this team this year. I watched several games when they were available on line, had the live stats on when they weren't, and checked up on them every chance I got, and was rewarded for it. Well coached, I say, and congratulations to all concerned.

Using /s is for cowards.

My daughter is in little league, and has gotten super excited about college softball this year. Coincide with the best season ever, and she is enjoying wearing her maroon VT hoodie EVERYWHERE.

Hey, didn't they make the Final 4 about 10 years ago??

UVA is a great place to take a dump.

Our first (and so far only) WCWS appearance was in 2008. We were one of 8 teams to make it that far, and we were one of two teams that lost both of our games in the double-elimination tournament, effectively putting us in a tie for 7th.

That was with Tinscher vs Osterman for best pitcher

Never Forget #1 Overall Seed UVA 54, #64 UMBC 74

This is very cool.

May try and make it to Tallahassee for a game or two. Where does this put them in the seedings, and when will they play?

We should be the 1 seed:

They are no one can catch Tech's acc record of 20-4

Yet still so little respect on the national scene.

Low strength of schedule is what is hurting them

Swept JMU right? Hell there is a team with 19 Loses ahead of Tech by a few spots.

Split with JMU also RPI plays a BIG part in rankings in softball

When in doubt. Nap it out

They split with JMU, which gives them four total games against Top 25 opponents of which they went 2-2. They swept UVA.

As for the teams with losses, the SEC gets a big latitude in terms of voting as they beat each other up. Almost more so than even football. There are 10 SEC teams in the Top 25, compared to 2 ACC teams. The Hokies didn't even play the other ACC team that's ranked in conference play. That's Florida State at 45-8.

The ACC isn't a big powerhouse in softball. Not terribly surprising.

Doesn't seem well organized schedule wise either though. Appears there are only 12 teams which is fine but that you play 24 games but face only 8 of the 12 teams. I guess that's somewhat like football but I would think it should be simple to shift to something more like basketball. Play two game stints in a round robin format with two other ACC programs so you still cut down on travel costs but get games in against all of the conference opponents. I would think that would help with the strength of schedule.

Seems the current system cuts down on traveling costs, which is a major concern with the non-revenue sports. This way, each team travels for only 4 weekends for conference games, and plays a 3-game series against each of the 8 teams they face. Sure, they could do 2-game series against 9 teams and 3-game series against the other 2 to get to the current 24-game season, but that would result in an imbalanced home-away schedule and either 5 or 6 road trips, with fairly little benefit.

Host a tournament every year where at least one other ACC team is invited. Like I saw Tech okay three years ago at CCU in Myrtle Beach, they had 6 teams I think.

Probably through both I guess

Any chance of getting an easy win over UVA to increase the odds of winning the Commonwealth Clash?

Never Forget #1 Overall Seed UVA 54, #64 UMBC 74

Postseason doesn't count towards the Clash, except in certain sports like Track and Golf where the point is determined by scoring at the ACC championships. The softball point is granted to the winner of the regular-season 3-game series.

The tiebreaker can play in here though. School with most ACC championships.

Wet stuff on the red stuff.

Unless something weird happens and they either tie in one of the ACC Track Championships or somehow evenly split a 3-game baseball series, the tiebreaker won't come into play this year.

we need to place higher in men's and women's track AND beat them in baseball to win the clash. If we manage to split a point somehow, having won the softball ACC tournament would help (school with the most ACC championships wins a tie). Not sure what, if any, ACC championships LOLUVa has, but then I can't think of any we have either.

Warning: this post occasionally contains strong language (which may be unsuitable for children), unusual humor (which may be unsuitable for adults), and advanced mathematics (which may be unsuitable for liberal-arts majors)..

A quick glance says that UVA won the women's Swimming and Diving championship, and we won a share of the men's Indoor Track and Field championship. Not sure if there are others.

For as many regular season games softball plays I am a bit surprised that this isnt a double elimination tournament.

It used to be double elimination, but the coaches felt that was a little difficult since the NCAAs were the following week and elected to go to single elimination

I find it a bit odd that after the ACC season is over for us, we're still playing games. Longwood and Western Carolina? What's the scheduling strategy there?

Reel men fish on Wednesdays

Keep them warm before the acc tournament starts

When in doubt. Nap it out

Most of the ACC teams still have conference games this weekend. We're only joined by UNC, UVA, and Duke on the list of teams who have wrapped it up already.

Have not really paid attention since Tinscher pitched. She was awesome but had little offensive help. She got screwed by the olympics dropping women's SB back then. After 20+ years of men's fast pitch I can attest that pitching is everything.

"Hey Bud, you wont have to hold the opponent to 17 points anymore."

ANGELA FUCKING TINCHER

Forgot about this vid!? She had amazing stuff. USA could not lay off that high riser and they could not come close to the low riser. Her curve (drop) was deadly. Most importantly the ball went where she wanted it Made me smile as much as any football vid. Thanks for posting!

"Hey Bud, you wont have to hold the opponent to 17 points anymore."

It completely baffles the ferk outta me why she wasn't selected for the National team. Travesty if you ask me.

UVA is a great place to take a dump.

Too many established pitchers in front of her. She would have made the Olympics if they would have continued the sport.

"Hey Bud, you wont have to hold the opponent to 17 points anymore."

VT just lost in their first game of the ACC Tournament as the 1 seed.

So there goes any hope of hosting a regional, I would assume.

Yeah in my opinion hosting a regional wasn't in play. But now They are going to be in much tougher regional

When in doubt. Nap it out

What the hell happened to both pitching and hitting that game? Glad I didn't pull the kids out of school to go watch.

I mean... they only lost 3-2. NCSU had more timely hits while VT had a runner thrown out at home in the 6th and didn't score after having 2 on, no outs in the 4th. Also in the regular season series, VT won 4-2 and 1-0 games against NC State so it's not crazy to think they could drop a 1 run game.

It's extremely disappointing but it doesn't strike me as an unfathomable result.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

Wouldn't they still play at the JMU regional?

Is it basketball season yet?

I'm thinking one of the sec teams is where Tech is gonna end up as

When in doubt. Nap it out

I would like to see them land at JMU (it is in my town) and advance by beating the Dukes on their home field.

Found out about the loss from the receptionist at the Red Drum restaurant in the obx. She was from the 'Burg and came to the table to bemoan the result. Bummah.

This is a rant! I have been noticing that many of the pitchers have forearm notes like a QB. WTF? She has maybe 3 pitches. 1 2 and 3.

Edit: /s

"Hey Bud, you wont have to hold the opponent to 17 points anymore."

I can't say for sure, but I'd guess it'd be more like scouting notes. Like pitch to #5 high and inside, or #9 will chase outiside sliders (do they have sliders in softball?)

"Hokie religions and ancient weapons are no match for a good blaster at your side, kid." Han Solo

I have noticed from Facebook photos that almost every player on my high school's current softball team wears those QB wrist guards. I'd really like to know why.

VT plays Illinois at Lexington Fri at noon. KY and Toledo are the other teams in the bracket. KY is the 14 seed and home team. Games are on ESPN 3.

Bold strategy laying one right down the center of the plate on pitch 1.

Edit: Wait how was it a 1-0 count and the first pitch she saw?

Edit 2: did they change pitchers?

I think they changed pitchers. I left the restaurant to pick up kids so had to stop watching.

Yeah I just listened to it sounds like they changed pitchers at 1-0. Nothing like someone taking you yards immediately out of the bullpen

One time I was watching a random baseball game on TV and there was a pitching change. From the pen out walked Cla Meredith, a childhood friend of mine, whom I hadn't seen or talked to since were little and didn't know he was a baseball player, to make his big league debut. Here is the wikipedia summary of that debut:

He made his major league debut on May 8 2005 against Seattle. Meredith walked two batters before allowing a grand slam to Richie Sexson.

It was the second pitch from the relief pitcher. Not sure why they keep pushing the "first pitch she saw" narrative.

Funny. I was watching and thought it was the first pitch from the reliever as well.

Edit: Unless the newspapers are wrong (unlikely) and my memory to boot (more possible), it was the first pitch from the reliever.

Not that bold. A lot of batters take a pitch just to see the release/speed

After 4 innings in Lexington:

VT 0 runs 5 hits 1 error
KY 3 runs 5 hits 0 errors

KY 3 runs after 2 out in the bottom of the 4th.

I don't know what everyone else is seeing, but IMO the umpire behind the place is forcing Eberle to live in the middle of the plate while the pitcher from UK is being given a lot of room off the black.

Is it basketball season yet?

I don't like to complain about calls.......but definitely have to agree with this.

Agree with you. I thought it was egregious, but he was consistent about it. Every darned time. The announcers couldn't help but comment on it, in an oh so cautious way.

Reel men fish on Wednesdays

The difference in the game today (outside of one of the most obvious strike zone difference I've ever seen in any NCAA softball or baseball game) is defense. UK has played outstanding defense while VT has consistently either made errors or very poor decisions while in the field.

Is it basketball season yet?

Hokie defense is in full meltdown mode now

So, whom is probably gonna be our opponent in the consolation game(did I get that right), & how do we stack against possible contenders??

UVA is a great place to take a dump.

They're playing right now. We beat Illinois yesterday and they're playing Toledo, the 4 seed. It's 0-0 in the 6th.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

Looks lik VT plays Kentucky again today, Sunday 5/19, at 12pm to see who moves on from the Lexington Regional.

If VT beats Kentucky, third game between them at 2:30pm with the winner going to the Super Regionals

VT beat Illinois 6-2, then lost to Kentucky 8-1 (gave up 3 runs in the 4th and 4 in the 5th), and then beat Illinois again 5-1 to get to the final

not going to happen...highlight I just saw on ESPN showed Kentucky up 11-1

Damn, was hoping they'd at least make it a better fight than last time. Oh well.

UVA is a great place to take a dump.

They had a great season and have a bright future with all but a couple of players coming back. New coach did well, and while Kaintuck was just too tough for them, the experience should stand them in good stead next year.
I really enjoyed watching them this year. It was a bright spot with all the negatory news and our baseball team going to hell. Very good entertainment.

Yup, that was a fantastic season. The team wasn't quite tournament-ready but they made a huge leap forward this year, and more Hokies than ever (ok well maybe since Tincher) are checking softball games / checking softball scores.

Yep. Classic Tech!

Exceeding expectations!

We put the K in Kwality

That's awesome. I'm proud that they turned the ship around. But to justify an early exit like this after the season we just had is just an excuse. They proved throughout the season that they had the horses to compete. Last years results are irrelevant and I guess you want to use it as a crutch.

Recruit Prosim

You do realize them making the Regionals is one of the few bright spots for the whole athletic program this school year, right? I mean I get what you're saying, but still.

UVA is a great place to take a dump.

"use it as a crutch."? No, that's not what anyone is doing here. Don't know why you're so eager to toss statements like that out when all folks were doing is seeing more than the last couple of games against a higher ranked, and higher seeded team. Part of the reason our gaudy record didn't get more respect nationally was because of our strength of schedule, from what I've read, and it seemed like the games we lost were to teams with a really good pitcher that kept our bats from getting going, so maybe we actually have a way to go to justify more than an early exit. While I won't attempt to understand your statement about being proud of their turn around after the rest of your post, I can honestly say I am very proud of this year's team and look forward to next year's effort.

Reel men fish on Wednesdays

To give you an idea of how good Kentucky is, the much higher seeded SEC team South Carolina, gave Florida State, the far and away best team in the ACC, everything it could handle. Kentucky beat South Carolina in three straight games earlier this season, allowing South Carolina to score 1 run in the three games. They also played 30 of their 58 games against ranked opponents this season. Its a better funded, more established program that was the host of the Regional for a reason.

But to give you an idea of how much Tech improved this year, Illinois spent most of the year hovering on and off the Top 25 polls and the Hokies beat them twice in this regional tournament.

And now the transfer portal is going to hurt us in softball. Eberle has entered. No word on where she might go, but it will hurt to lose her. Anyone have any insights here?

Reel men fish on Wednesdays

Well she is a grad transfer in biology and wants to pursue a masters. Probably go because few like to get a higher degree from the same school. We'll still have a good one but can't remember her name.

"Hey Bud, you wont have to hold the opponent to 17 points anymore."

Rochard is a really fine pitcher, without a doubt, and I'm glad we still have her. Too bad about that higher degree thing. I'm way too far from that stuff to know anything about it, so thanks for informing me. I know you don't lose the quality of someone like Eberle without feeling it, though. She won a ton of games for us this year as well as plenty of accolades. Still looking forward to next year, we have some good players and coaching, but my optimism is tinted a bit now. Cain't have nothin'!(/s) Glad I tuned in so much this year and got to see her pitch. Haven't been more than casually interested since the Tincher days. Forgot how much fun it could be.
