Assistant Coach Prognostication Thread

We know Hamilton is taking over as DC and that Wiles, Burden, and Mitchell will also not be returning by next year.

Who does HokieNation want to see/think will take over in these positions?

Positions open, currently are:

RB Coach
DL Coach
LB Coach
CB Coach
S Coach, although I'm assuming Hamilton remains in this regard.

All told, I'm assuming we have ~2 mil to go around

How has Brown done at Marshall, might be better if he coached the Dline.

I'd prefer JC Price. He's spent more time with the DLine.

Gobble Till You Wobble

The other reason I think this would be a great hire is because he is very highly respected in the VA High School coaching world which would be great for recruiting the state.

Is coronavirus over yet?

In order to advance recruiting, we need to move on from the thought process of just recruiting Virginia well. In order to compete, we need to cast a wide net. I've always said I'll take a lower rated 3* guy from Florida over the same guy from VA because more than likely they played better competition. We need coaches who can connect with kids that are 15-18 years old and make them want to come play at Virginia Tech, regardless of what state they are from.

1-0 every week

I would definitely agree with this. However I don't think the two things are mutually exclusive. We regularly lose a handful of the nations top recruits, from Va., to other P-5 schools. It would be nice to have someone on staff who already has a great reputation among VHSL football coaches so that we could snag a couple of these kids along the way.

Is coronavirus over yet?

When you say "lose", you imply they were ours. It's not the case. Just because a coveted player goes to a high school in Virginia, it doesn't make them "ours to lose". Great players go out of state to play. In every state.

You're the only ones that I can talk to about this, you guys.

If we are recruiting a kid and he choses to go somewhere else, we lost him.

Is coronavirus over yet?

You cant lose what you never had. A slightly more accurate way of saying it would be we missed out on landing him. I will never understand the mentality that we should be able to haul in any recruit we try really hard to get. The variables are infinite. Some coaches recruit better than others but it is like a baseball batting average, you just try to hit it enough times to win the game (but there will be strike outs)

You're the only ones that I can talk to about this, you guys.

Is coronavirus over yet?

Absolutely. But, if you danced with a hot chick at the club but she walked out with another dude, would you say you lost a girlfriend?

"A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky dangerous animals and you know it." - K

Since you specified that she was hot, obviously I'd say that guy took my wife.

You cant lose what you never had

What? That's totally not true. It's near asinine to assert such a falsehood.

Merriam Webster definition of "lose":

(1): to fail to win, gain, or obtain

(2): to undergo defeat in

You can surely lose something you never had, and especially recruits.

๐Ÿฆƒ ๐Ÿฆƒ ๐Ÿฆƒ

In this case you would have lost the competition to lure in the recruit. As worded, lose would be defined as ceasing to have. As mentioned, it is semantics, but words have meaning.

"A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky dangerous animals and you know it." - K

to fail to win, gain, or obtain

They failed to obtain the recruit. They lost the recruit

It's not semantics. It's the literal definition of the word. And YES!! Words have meaning!! It's incontrovertible fact that the term was used correctly.

๐Ÿฆƒ ๐Ÿฆƒ ๐Ÿฆƒ

Context ALSO has meaning.

We didn't lose the national championship this year. Yet we failed to win, gain, or obtain it.

You can use the word "lose" in the framework of recruiting, but you certainly don't have to. Just like you don't have to call yourself a loser if you fail to win. But you can if you want.

But we did!! We didn't lose the National championship game. We did lose the National championship. We lost it really early, tbh.

๐Ÿฆƒ ๐Ÿฆƒ ๐Ÿฆƒ

So did almost everyone else, including those who don't know it yet.

But normally, you reserve the term for someone who plays in the game.

Yes!! Everyone else loses when there is only one winner!!

๐Ÿฆƒ ๐Ÿฆƒ ๐Ÿฆƒ

So I lost the Daytona 500 last year?

Was a lot cheaper doing it from home.

??? You lost me.

#Let's Go - Hokies

Yes!! You failed to win the 2019 Daytona 500, according to the definition provided by Merriam Webster, you lost the 2019 Daytona 500. I presume you were never even entered into the race, which makes it 100% certain that you would lose. You can insist the definition is wrong, but it is a definition provided by one of the leading American institutions in lexicology.

It is true, that there are other definitions of "lose" that require an existential presence in order to lose:

to undergo defeat in

By this specific definition, you didn't lose the Daytona 500 because you were not defeated in the 500. You can't be defeated in the race if you were never entered into the race. But, there are multiple definitions of "lose" and because the original usage of "lost a recruit" matched one of the definitions provided by an expert institution of lexicology, it was a correct usage.

I apologize for giving you hard time about the reality of a definition "to lose" (there are 15+ in M&W). It's silly to argue about a definition when all we have to do is look it up in a dictionary and see IT'S RIGHT THERE. But, the ignorance of minor facts is, imo, a microcosm of our larger issues as a society and hence my obsession over a very minor issue.

And I digress. Go Hokies.

๐Ÿฆƒ ๐Ÿฆƒ ๐Ÿฆƒ

A good bit of communication is context.

It's why you can pick different words that are more appropriate in different situations. While a word might seem to be a good fit based on it's definition, it might be a bad fit due to context.

No, I didn't lose the Daytona 500 last year. I didn't enter it. I could neither win nor lose it. Also, sometimes when you lose a battle you win the war, so is that really a loss, or is it a win? Ever hear of a pyrrhic victory? It's a win that's really a loss.

Is this type of discussion really a microcosm of larger issues as a society? Or is the problem more that people actually understand what each other are saying, but are being purposefully obtuse over the grey area that separates their positions?

Yes. Communication and word choice is important. "lost a recruit" is a totally fine phrase and the context is easily understandable that VT "failed to obtain" that recruit.

I also agree that "lost the Daytona 500" isn't a great use of the "failed to win" definition when referring to someone that never entered the race. Although it is correct, not enough context is provided and a faulty assumption is likely to be made that the someone entered the race.

And yes, imo, denying someone's correct use of a term is a microcosm of larger issues. I can get into politics about insistent ignorance, but I"m not going to for sake of civility (and rules of forum). Well-founded truths (supported by empirical evidence and/or the appropriate institutions to assert such truth) are rejected far too often due to incongruous beliefs.

I love me some dlo but I don't want him anywhere near these kids. He damn near ruined Jimmy Williams.

I been here since day 0.

Jimmy didn't understand coverages. He was naturally talented to make up for a ton, but he always needed help from other players.

Was going to type almost this exact list.

As for people who would be concerned with DHall lets all understand that he was 18-21 yrs old at that time. He's now in his mid 30's with 14 yrs or so of NFL experience and a family. I've talked with him before and he seems like a great guy. He may have come in with a bit of an attitude but look where he came from. But he's just like any of us, the older mature "us", now. He cares about the schools that his kids go to, etc etc. I have no idea about his coaching abilities but would be awesome just thinking about it.

Well I mean he isnt a coach so....

He was very close to being the DB coach at UMD. However, while he waited to find out the situation with the Skins, Locksley had to move on.

I know he would rather be an NFL coach, as it isn't as involved as a college coach. Right now I think he is enjoying the podcasts and other things he has going on.

Previously LowBrau.

Jeez, I felt it was pretty meh having such an inexperienced hire at DC, but seeing the list made it all hit home that we're also bringing in an entirely fresh defensive staff.

This may not be nearly as smooth of a transition as we're all hoping for...

Jc price coaches dl for Marshall, how close a style does their dl mirror VT style?

If Wiles is indeed not returning (which makes me sad, solid dude). Then I'm all for a guy who has some salt to him and a couple of good Coach/recruiters. I know everyone wants the famous VT names to fill these roles, VT needs proven guys who are great at both coaching and more importantly recruiting. I think Loren Johnson would be excellent

Where are you guys seeing this? You'd think they would have said that in the press release

He isn't dismissed "effective immediately". He'll still coach through the bowl game.

I heard this morning that flowers was offered

I would rather take Loren Johnson over Flowers but I'm ok with Flowers but what has Flowers been doing?

Hokies, Local Soccer, AFC Ajax, Ravens

Being smart with his health and money. Retired early to protect his body and apparently has been very smart with his money. Seems like a really sharp guy who made the most out of his NFL career on and off the field.

If there is anyone of the former DBs that played here that I would take with no coaching experience is brandon flowers...dude has always came off like a coach on the field and seemed to be a good technician...always seemed to be in the right place..

Or one of the Fullers, granted two of them are still playing but I would take any one of them as a coach any day

"These people are losing their minds" - Mike Patrick

Doesnt Vinnie coach HS?

I'm sure that's not time consuming at all. Maybe he could do both.

Wow I feel really bad for confusing him with some one else (Shawn Witten who just won the tennessee state championship)

Torrian didn't have a ton of coaching experience before he came to Tech. I'm not too concerned if Flowers is the pick.

JHam has a ton of connections to former VT great DBs and LBs as well.

Torrian was a GA first though.

Is that a typical move/a move that is realistic for his future? From a DC in division 2 to a ILB coach in Division 1? It seems his next step would be a DC in FCS if he is actually good as a DC.

If you are making a jump to FBS realistically you move to a position coach position.

He also coached LBs at Garden City CC as well (from Last Chance U)

/S? I can assure you he has not lost the locker room, or we would have not rallied after the Duke game and Fuente might be jobless right now.

Changes on the staff were inevitable, just think there is a lot going on behind the scenes right now and fans need to be patient and let everything play out. Next year is the biggest year of Fuente's tenure, and he and Whit probably want to assemble the best staff possible to make it back to the ACCCG. Get why some people are negative right now, but everything will work itself out.

In Sam Rogers we trust.

Yes. Sarcasm

You will see this game, this upset and this sign next on ESPN Sportscenter. Virginia Tech 31 Miami 7

I would be shocked if Tyler isn't LB coach.

DBs: I would like to fit both Prioleau and Loren Johnson on staff. LJ is critical to recruiting VA. I would get both on staff by reassigning Lechtenberg. His specialty is recruiting JUCOs which we don't need right now. You can give him a recruit support position.

On DL, we need to spend money on a recruiter. Not sure who fits our system well but we need to do better here. A Brick Haley type but with ability to fit our system. JC Price probably isn't the recruiter we need. Tapp, maybe.

I think we are saving money on D to spend it on a big name OC. Apparently we are "rebuilding the running game." I could see Canada or Morris but we should have an open mind.

It sounds like Vice's spot is the most unknown. If running game is focus, have to let new OC pick that spot and RBs.

Vice/Corn probably end up with Odom (at Memphis.)

Not really impressed with Canada, no one can deal with him more than a year.

The way Vice has recruited we need to keep him here.

New guess:

-- Lechtenberg stays at RB's coach, mentored by Kill, which frees up another spot on D

-- Hamilton, DC & Safeties (He's in Bud's spot)
-- Tracey Claeys, LB's (Hamilton's spot)
-- Robert Prunty, DT's (Wiles)
-- Daryl Tapp, DE's (Lechtenberg's spot is now an on-field coach)
-- Pierson Prioleau, CB's (Mitchell)
-- Jack Tyler, Quality Control D (same spot Jack was in)
-- Loren Johnson, Director of Player Development, D (takes Prioleau's spot)

I would be okay rolling with this. The concern with Hamilton is a lack of experience but with Bud "invested" in seeing Hamilton succeed, having two experienced DC's on his staff we have hedged with this concern. Tapp, Prioleau, Tyler and LJ have system knowledge. Prunty, Tapp, Tyler and LJ could dramatically improve VA recruiting, whether you value it or not.

I'm not crazy about Lecht at RB's coach but he has more offensive coaching experience than I thought and Kill apparently took over RB coaching from Burden anyway.

You have my attention...

Looking at today's news, it would appear you have a crystal ball. Care to pick a stock for my IRA?

Pierson Prioleau

And he bring D Coordinator experience to the table.

And he can wear his Super Bowl ring when saying hi to a recruit's mom.

I would be for this. VT did a great video profile on him earlier this season.
Seems like a true LPD guy.

I'll tell you what - the former players LOVE this guy.

Because he played all their positions.

If you ever got to meet J Ham, he's a great dude, smart, and selfless.

RB Coach
DL Coach
LB Coach
CB Coach
S Coach, although I'm assuming Hamilton remains in this regard.

If you're not sure if my comment warrants a "/s", it probably does.

My predictions:

RB Coach: Brian White, current BC RB coach.
DL Coach/Co-DC/Run Game Coordinator: JC Price, co-DC/DL at Marshall, 8 years G5 experience
CB Coach: Pierson Prioleau, current interim CB coach
LB Coach: Xavier Adibi, DC Texas A&M - Commerce, was defense analyst for Arkansas in 2018

There are certainly inherent weaknesses to these hires, but the potential for long term success.

Never Forget #1 Overall Seed UVA 54, #64 UMBC 74

If we could run the ball even close to as well as BC does I would be ok with Brian White being hired. Of course we don't have the OL that BC has so I'm not sure that we would have the same success.

I just don't see how the defense can be better next year with this hire? And if it isn't, do we really expect the offense light it up consistently? Looking like a 7-5 year to me.. hopefully I'm wrong.

We have the best DC. There is no way we could be better next year no matter who we hired. Even if Hamilton is the best available he isnt Bud and his 30 years exp.

Flowers is awesome! I would love it if he became DB's coach. My concern is not his ability to coach, it is the culture shock that comes with the lifestyle change of a retired NFL player to now an assistant coach in DI football. It is a lot of hours. This is not to say Flowers is not a hard worker and doesn't have the work ethic. Just pointing out that it is a big and sudden change. He's smart enough to realize that, so I'm sure he'd only commit if he was open to the hours and the work involved.

Oh god. They promoting Lecht to fill Zohn's spot.

Go Hokies

Go Falcons

Expect to see some more promotions from staff to assistant coach.

Fuente isn't going to fill all his assistant coach positions with former VT players, esp not ones without coaching or even staff experience. That said, you may see some familiar names come back to fill staff positions, as has been fairly common previously (e.g. Hamilton, Prioleau, Tyler, Shuman, Grimm to name a few)

I know we're all thinking it, but if/when Corny is fired, the chances of VT hiring Chad Morris as OC just went from 1% to 0.01%. Auburn OC Kenny Dillingham is following Mike Norvell to FSU. Gus and Chad Morris are very very good friends, so if Chad Morris takes an OC position, it'll be at Auburn.

I guess were stuck with Corny.

Overheard as Duke assistant coaches took elevator down from press box: โ€œGuys, they stopped the run with a three-man front.โ€ - David Teel Tweet 2018

Took 27 hours from Dillingham leaving to announcing the Morris hire.

Morris was on the locker room at Auburn during the Iron Bowl, so this wasn't exactly a difficult call.

Kyshoen Jarrett put up a tweet with a bunch of VT hashtags...possibly nothing, but also...possibly something

side note - did anything change on how to embed a tweet? When I copy the code into the image insert, it's just coming up with the link to the tweet and not the image.

I'm hearing they have some sort of big name hire on the defense, but not confirmed what so ever.

Tracy Claeys, Asst. DC/DL. Calling it now.

This is one of the names being floated around yes

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

So, he made a few poor decisions 2 years ago and was fired, and then hired on as Mike Leach's DC in Pullman. And then he resigned this year due to poor performance of his defense, so he's currently unemployed. Also, he was Jerry Kill's DC for a 17-year stint at four different schools. Not surprising to see his name mentioned.

he resigned because his assistants were not following his direction and Leach wasn't backing him up

Even better.

Not sure if I am 100% here, but I Am being told Tapp and Pierson will be taking assistant coach roles and the recruits will find out this weekend for sure. Sometimes my friend in the know jumps too fast so this is my disclaimer in case that's not accurate.

At this point I'd be upset if we lost Prunty. Unless, we are going to break up DL to inside and ends. That leaves room for Prunty and Tapp. But I'm not sure they'd want to do that.

So, reports(!) are saying Memphis will bump OC Ryan Silverfield to HC.

Live look-in at Barry Odom:

You're the only ones that I can talk to about this, you guys.

Who is going to be the linebackers coach? I keep seeing Prunty/Tapp-DL, Pierson-CB, and Hamilton-Safeties...Is Jack Tyler the only name going around for LB? He seems pretty smart and sounds like he has been around Foster enough to have learned something especially since he also played for him.

My money has been on Jack Tyler all along for LBs, and I'll be surprised if he isn't the pick. Have heard nothing but positives about him from everyone. Several years experience on the staff at this point in a quality control role. As a player, he significantly outproduced his recruiting profile (was a 2-star walk-on who went on to become 1st team All-ACC) so he understands how to reach/maximize potential.

Tracy Claeys is going around too.

Claeys it is at LB coach. And Tapp for DL. Just announced.

Heard a rumor (no sauce) about a possible Bill Teerlinck hire at the D Line coaching spot. Not sure why a coach would go from the NFL (Buffalo Bills) to college at the same position, but it's just a rumor I heard.

"heard a rumor" by reading the TSL Sub board? ๐Ÿค”

Really hoping that's an accurate rumor, because that's a big time hire.

No actually not. Friend texted me. It could be that he is a member, but he didn't say where he heard. I'm not a member nor do I even read TSL.

Agree big time hire though.

That info was also on the (free) TSL podcast...

FoF: Friend of Fuente.

It would be a really good hire. Good mentor for Tapp. Help recruit NFL talent. Coaching background. Former DC at the college level.

We could still use a Prunty and/or Loren Johnson. I would like to see us reorganize the recruiting staff, give premiere pay and positions for guys like Davidson, Tyler, Prunty and Johnson. Their inclusion could be key to us adding the talent to make this staff work.
