Fuente: I'm sorry to hear that you're not going to commit to VT. If you dont mind me asking, what was the main reason you're not committing to VT? You seemed to love your visits.
Recruit: None of the other schools' fans photo shopped me onto a girls body. It's just wierd.

As far as I can tell this guy seems like a really good player, so I'm happy to see us in good position for a good recruit given how dry these last few months have been for good news on the 2020 class. Perhaps this guy will be another quality late-rising RB gem from FL like King. However, this, and Corum's B1G interest, is also signaling that we are likely to miss out on Corum unless something changes for him in a big way (or other places fill up before he commits).

Here is an embed of his profile:

And a quote from the free 247 article about the event:

Port Orange (Fla.) Spruce Creek 2020 running back Marvin Scott III was an absolute tank of a specimen, a battering ram with nimble feet, he's quick and it showed in cat and mouse drills against linebackers. He was one of the more decisive and exciting runners in the competition portion. West Virginia and Wake Forest are among the programs to offer Scott who looked capable of playing anywhere in this setting.

I figured we were well out of the race with Corum at this point so I dont see any other top RBs or targets of that area of the field who can be elite game changers for another year running.

We won't get a blue chip RB until Fuente can show he can use a RB effectively. He hasn't done that yet at VT so it is going to be hard to get the kind of RB who wants to be "The Guy" until he does.

Chicken and Egg.

True, but I don't think he has used our current RBs all that well the last few years.

Based on? The days of hand the rock 25 times to one guy is over. Nobody in P5 football is doing that anymore especially with Paul johnson gone.

Who said anything about handing it off 25 times a game?

You're right, no one is doing that. Yet most other schools are getting much more production out of the RB position than we are.

So chicken and egg. Are we not getting production because we haven't had the RB's to get that production from?

Wet stuff on the red stuff.

We were 57th in rushing last year. Some of the teams who had better rushing attacks:
Arkansas St., Wyoming, Florida International, Northern Illinois, Coastal Carolina, Buffalo, Western Michigan, Florida Atlantic, Toledo, UAB, UNLV, Ohio, Georgia Southern, Tulane, Wake Forest....

Do you think they're all out recruiting us at RB?

Who are they getting those stats against P5 or lower?

Wet stuff on the red stuff.

Join us in the Key Players Club

This seems like a flawed argument assuming you're referencing that most of the teams listed above are G5 teams playing most of their games against G5 defenses. To that point, yes they may be playing majority G5 defenses, but they themselves have a "G5" offensive line and RB.

VT may play majority P5 competition, but they are also a P5 team themselves.

Also based on this logic, a G5 team plays mostly other G5 teams, with typically a few outlier P5 games. In these circumstances, you would expect they would not have as good stats against those P5 teams.

On the flip side, a P5 team plays mostly other G5 teams, with typically a few outlier G5 or FCS games. Wouldn't you expect a P5 team to get a statistical bump in these games? So really, is it not worse that we're being outperformed in rushing by these G5 teams according to this logic?

GIVE IT TO ME ROSCOE!

No because a the lower level an individual talented back or in the case of teams running the option several backs who run the ball a lot more. Great example is the RB from a Memphis who Fuente recruited. Kid was great got drafted his individual talent made him much better than his opponents. He didn't need a great line to block that well for him to stack up yards.

Wet stuff on the red stuff.

Join us in the Key Players Club

This could be an interesting conversation I think. My guess is that there is so much more to a successful run game than just one on one blocking. P5 defenses have linebackers and secondary players that are capable of taking away so much more of the field than at the lower level. I wonder if there are advanced stats for the running game that equalizes the playing field.

"with all due respect, and remember I’m sayin’ it with all due respect, that idea ain’t worth a velvet painting of a whale and a dolphin gettin’ it on" - Ricky Bobby

You're 100% right here, not really sure how anyone is arguing it. Our talent level has fallen off a cliff at the rb position, and corny is trying to use his guys situationally. I do subscribe to the belief that if King ends up being a stud, we will see him featured far more than what we're used to seeing in the Fuente era. Look at how much Peoples was featured in 2018 once his production started increasing compared to past seasons.

Unfortunately i think a lot of it is tied to O-line play too. We've made it a pretty big priority to recruit well at offensive line since Fuente got here. I think we can all agree recruiting linemen was a struggle for essentially Beamers last 5 years. While King isn't an elite recruit at running back, he is a high end one that, if developed properly, should thrive behind a really well recruited line. I'd rather have that than a 5 star guy struggling to find any room.

15 Straight

The OL play is where I am most conflicted. Vice is our big-time recruiting ace. He's been THE closer, and he's flipped a top prospect in Nester. OL is one of the few areas in recruiting where I feel like we have been excelling and will continue to excel moving forward.

However, I still feel like the blocking style we've shown the last 3 years has been upright and static far too often. I haven't been confident in short yardage since Evan's keepers (and specifically only Evan's keepers). The last three seasons I have rarely felt confident we will get third and three or less on the ground. I just want to see this talented OL start imposing themselves at the LOS more often. Perhaps that is just not the style we are going for and we will always rely on positioning and misdirection, but that's certainly something I'd like to see from a VT OL again and I believe we have the talent to do so.

I'm not sold on Vice's coaching ability yet either, but I'm willing to wait until he gets more of the recruits that fit his style of play in the starting lineup. Really up until this year, he's been primarily using players that were recruited by Beamer's staff, which had a much more physical style of play. Curious to see how guys like Dzansi and Lecitus do this year, as they are in theory better suited for Vice's passive technique. IMO, it's an encouraging sign that Darrisaw was our best OL last year

I know people on here don't like this excuse, but unless you've landed an absolute freak of nature, it takes some time to really develop as a lineman. Most of the guys that have been playing weren't recruited for this system and the guys Fuente and Vice have brought in are still growing up. I think as you see more of Vice's guys get in the rotation, you'll see improvement. Like i said, i know a lot of yall don't like the "wait until they get their guys in there" or the "you've gotta let these kids develop" excuse but the difference between 1 year in the system vs 3 years is huge.

15 Straight

Keyshawn King - just because his "star" rating adjusted later does not mean he doesnt have the perception of those who evaluate talent as being a top prospect...

There's a big difference between King and a David Wilson/Ryan Williams level prospect

TBD - not saying King is at RW or DW level yet, but he looks electric. Let us see. We only had a great O line in 2010. 2009 was still suspect per usual.

Ok I think that Fuentes rotation and running back philosophy is stupid... but we did just get a blue chip rb in King

CMY has been recruiting like crazy, a lot of offers to '20 and '21 players, but still plenty to '19 prospects and transfers. Might pull a former Cincinnati SG recruit (his primary recruiter at Cinci is now on our staff)

Speaking of recruiting, haha:

This is awesome. Totally busted out laughing at it!

I know kids try to make it seem like there's no particular order here, but it's pretty easy to see, from placement, which school they really favor. For instance, in this case, Alabama's on here. So that's where he's going (unless they pull his offer).

He's got the Adidas compression sleeve and NC State is only Adidas school on the list. So it could be "I'm going to Alabama... unless NC State pays me enough to go there instead."

I actually worked out next to this kid at my gym in the west end 4 weeks ago. He was wearing an nc state shirt but was carrying around 7-8 lanyards with official school visitor credentials on each - all personalized to him including 1 from us

Low morale

Not sure about Texas but I follow Miss St. fairly closely (wife is an alum) and they have a stud in Kylin Hill coming back this year. I think we provide the easiest path to a starting role. Gamecocks' 247 page put out an article citing them recruiting him, but they also have 3 SR RBs on the roster.

Didn't realize how highly rated he was coming out of high school. Per 247 he was the #1 APB and #29 Nationally rated recruit in the 2016 class.

That would be an awesome addition. Would like to see if BAG or LA have any insight.

VT is the first school that he locked a visit in with. Decent shot here

As a TKP community we can roll with "decent shot" and happily turn it into "we are the leaders by a mile."

Oh, so he's enrolling already is he?

I already ordered a jersey for next season with his name and number

Feaster famine? Hopefully Feaster.

JP

Feaster would change the trajectory of next year. Having an every down back that can produce takes a lot of pressure off of Willis and opens up play action. Hope it happens.

I'm not sure I'm ready to declare the guy who has only seen spot duty with Clemson an "every down back" yet but he would certainly be the most talented RB on the roster by a large margin and would have the potential to be that for us for sure. Obviously there was a really good guy taking that duty from him there so hopefully he comes here and gets a shot to be that.

Having a player the caliber of Feaster, "every down" or not, still is going to require DCs to respect the threat of the run, even if we have no intention of handing the ball off.

Never Forget #1 Overall Seed UVA 54, #64 UMBC 74

Spot duty because Clemson is rich with talent.
Tavian is no doubt capable of being an every down Ryan MF Williams type of back.
He's actually a better receiver out of the back field.
Playing back up could be a positive......just makes him hungrier.
He can be a game changer if he gets his attitude right.

Any word on when his OV is taking place?

I've said it on here like 15 times, but I sat beside of some of his hometown folks at the 2017 game. Both had on game worn jerseys. If he's as good a dude they were billing him as, I'm all for it.

Amateur superstar and idiot extraordinaire.

Kim had an unofficial visit today, scored an offer, and "accepted on the spot"

"It felt like home," he said. "I got to campus and met the coaches, who I can see myself being mentored by for my college career. I get a chance to be a part of something great and I'm glad I'm a Hokie."

Korean QB? That's a first for me - awesome!'

ps. How's this guy unranked / unrated? Cannon arm that's accurate. What am i missing?

I expect him to get a ranking in the next couple months. He looks good. Interested to see how a pro style QB shapes up in our offense. First Asian football player I can think of that isn't a lineman

How could you forget Ed Tan and his Heisman campaign? For shame!

Timmy Chang?

Hines Ward?

Tyrone Liu?

He's labeled as pro style but his tape is much more of run and gun

Recruit Prosim

Cannon might be overstating it. He's also tiny

6'2" tiny?

I didn't see a highlight where he had to throw it 80 yards downfield, but he was scrambling and throwing against his motion 35 yards or more downfield and threw it with zip and accuracy. Pretty cannon to me.

I'm by no means an expert evaluator and rarely watch recruiting videos but I'm not seeing a cannon arm. He does have excellent ball placement, especially on the move, but looks uncomfortable in the pocket and has issues with his mechanics. Also while I know Westfield has produced some excellent players, I don't know anything about the level of talent around him or the opponents.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

Kid reminds me of Michael Brewer a bit. Most everything he does is a bit unorthodox, but he gets it done nonetheless. His arm is definitely not a cannon, but he can drop it where it needs to be. Not sure if he is a P-5 starter, but we never know what we will end up needing and we never know how a kid will evolve once in college.

Is it basketball season yet?

He throws it against his body 40 yards downfield with zip and accuracy. I might've missed any highlight that had him heaving it 80 yards downfield, but I didn't see any. If he can do the aforementioned throws pretty easily then I'd be surprised if he can't heave it down the field easily too.

Committed on the spot? I like this kid.

That is some awesome Hudl footage. Looks like a baller.

Nice to see the kid recognize MV7 - kind of crazy that kids that age group don't include it more. I haven't see Vick in an offer picture in some time. Instant like!

1-0

Big fan. Kid makes it look easy. Could definitely be an ultra-efficient 70% first read type guy because of his accuracy, ability to throw guys open and fit it in tight windows. With the wide-receiving core we are building all we need is someone with the rhythm and accuracy that this guy has to get it out quick and let guys make plays. Not a "canon" but is making throws all over the field not every guy is making in high school and knows when to step in to get the ball in on time.

Kid commits to Tech and immediately ranked as a 3* that day.

I don't know how to feel about that, but hell yeah.

Nature of the ratings beast. Ratings are usually driven by offers. Offers are sometimes driven by other offers. Offers are seldom driven by ratings.

6'1.5 163

I like the positivity but 163.... he's going to have to put on at least 25 before he sees the field

per 247, he's picked up 7 of that 25 and gotten a hair taller; so hopefully he's on pace.

This board fell in love with the last QB we had from Westfield so at least he has that going for him.

Evan Watkins submitted a CB for each. Currently appears from 247 free side that it's us vs Michigan for Powell. Would be a massive get for us to convince him to stay home

TBF - 247 is always optimistic and positive about news. Then it fails and it's egg on their face. So much for insiders.

Positive news sells more insider subs and if you're trying to find a lot of positive news about VT recruiting then you're definitely going to have to manufacture some, lol.

Using /s is for cowards.

They are? The 247 boards are the most pessimistic community I've ever seen. Obviously the 247 business model requires insiders to drum up some degree of excitement for the programs they cover, but even insiders can only operate off of the information they get from their sources. And a source can only provide a snapshot of what a recruit is telling someone at a given moment, which can change extremely quickly over the course of a recruitment or simply be a bunch of fluff from a kid trying to figure out how to navigate an extremely complex, confusing process. I think it's pretty clear that crystal balls are predictions, not guarantees (and the prediction aspect is more pronounced the farther away it is from an actual public commitment). Additionally, recruits have literally told the coaching staff they were going to commit to VT and then committed to a different school the next day. I don't think it's unreasonable that insiders aren't able to account for that type of deception.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

When I used to peruse the boards they were incredibly optimistic. Eg: every talent was a diamond in the rough, all the 4 or 5 stars were incredibly high on us, lots of "We've got an amazing chance here" / "he's a silent commit" shticks.

How is that any different from here?

They sell it as some amazing insight you get by signing up only to get essentially nothing of concrete. If your main use as a service is to provide insight and then you get really nothing, then what kind of a product am i paying for? Smells like bait and switch to me.

There was a really good article on The Athletic and not to take anything away from the article, but it pointed out there were 400 something kids in the portal and only 65 signed with another power 5 program.

I'm wondering how the next year will look after players see a bunch of unsigned kids sitting around with nowhere to go when the season starts.

Really happy about this offer. Guy is a monster and will blow up

Yesterday, while stuck on a conference call I was bored and clicked on Lakeem's highlights video. I was surprised at how much faster he looked than his competition. His long strides make him look kind of like Vince Young did, he looks slow but he's blowing by everyone. Anyway, I decided to Google to see if he ran track and what his track times were. It sounds like this kid has had a pretty rough go at it over the last few months. There was a go fund me trying to help him and then another article gave a few more details. To sum it up, he was hit by a car crossing the street and broke his back, jaw and several ribs. Just by quickly looking at the comments on the Go Fund Me page it is evident that this kid is really well liked by the community. Sounds like he's pretty tough too - he got through all those surgeries and still was playing basketball a couple of months later. Whatever happens with him, it'll be great if this kid can come back from all that and have success on the field at this next level. I'm with LA here, I think he is way underrated and I'm betting this kid comes back and dominates in his senior season, pushing him into a 4-star recruit. His offense tape looks great but there were a few defensive snaps on there that made me feel all giddy inside.
If you scroll down to about the middle of this article, that is where it covers Rudolph.

https://pilotonline.com/sports/high-school/football/article_867d9724-719...

Seems like there is quite a bit of debate about what is his best position and where he will likely end up playing. I've seen some say we are looking at him primarily at safety, some say H-Back, some say outside receiver. Either way I'm a big fan of this type of athleticism, so I'm mostly just excited to get him on campus and figure it out.

LAhokie, question for you (or anyone else that has more of a football background). I love football but never played. I was a track guy in high school and college and I tend to pay close attention to track times on some of these guys. As much excitement as there was last year for Payoute - I fell like our new guy Jalin Hyatt should be getting at least as much excitement. Please, nobody take that I'm saying anything bad about Payoute. I'm just feeling like we should be a little more excited about Hyatt. Payoute won state last year in the 100m with a pr of 10.67 - blazing fast. Both Payoute and Hyatt are new to track and field so they are doing this off of pure speed and have lots of room for becoming much, much faster. Earlier this month, the two went head to head and Hyatt blew the doors off of him and everyone else at the Bojangles meet with a 10.46. Now, Cole Beck didn't break under 10.4 until his senior year and I think we see how fast he really is. Hyatt is right there with Beck in pure speed. Hyatt currently has a 200 Junior season pr of 21.14 - Beck's PR for his junior year was 21.42. This kid is fast - 247 immediately, upgraded his rating after this race. So when I look at his tape - I see (albeit my untrained eyes) better route running and better hands that what Payoute showed (granted, we know he had to play QB). Anyway, my question is - for you all that can see more into tape - why aren't we more excited about this kid? Are their weaknesses that I'm not seeing which would keep him down?

Payoute was a late climber in the rankings though. I wouldn't be surprised to see Hyatt move up a decent amount and end up being a 4 star when its all said and done. Payoute also ran those times 2 inches taller and 30 pounds heavier.

15 Straight

I'd argue that when Hyatt puts on a little more weight through strength training he will get even faster. But yeah, Payoute is good bit bigger. I'm pumped to see all this speed coming to the team now.

I'm personally extremely excited about Hyatt. More of a polished receiver than Payoute but needs to really bulk up. Should be a low to mid 4* guy and probably will be by the time it's all said and done. Wouldn't surprise me at all if he ends up ranked as high or higher than Lambert tbh

I just keep hearing all this doom and gloom about this years recruiting class. This kid has elite speed. He is a little skinny but getting more muscle and weight on will do nothing but help his acceleration. And youtube is filled with videos of him. The one handed catch one is pretty impressive.

Hyatt's One-handed catch

Nobody has doom and gloom about our WR recruiting

Not talking about our WR recruiting. Talking about the 2020 class. But - there's plenty of doom and gloom on here. Most of it is probably directed at not liking the Game of Thrones last episode right now. My point is, we had about the same kind of class last year...I think we had 1 or two more recruits at the time. Suddenly, Payoute shows he has some speed and everyone got excited. It was fun all around. This kid runs even faster and everyone was sort of meh. Honestly, I probably just wanted to talk about football because I'm over seeing 100's of OT threads. I come here for Virginia Tech football and other sports and it has been tough to find.

Welcome to the offseason here at TKP, where all the scraps of info about the program turn into a civil war that devolves into a critique of BBQ sauces.

Really, the by the summer all of the decent info about the team has been discussed twice already and is the time when no news is good news. This is the wasteland of relevant college sports info. The best you can hope for until summer practice starts is another discussion on a season preview and the occasional recruiting blip.

Come to Blacksburg and see what the Hokie Pokie is really all about

Exactly. I'd rather have OT threads than threads discussing Mook Reynolds being arrested and Josh Jackson maybe being caught up in an academic scandal and Adonis Alexander not playing school.

One good player does not make a class

Except Mike Vick

I have no idea who will be better but I do not usually get too wrapped up in speed. Elite speed alone rarely translates. David Wilson had elite rb speed but I would argue his agility was his greatest attribute and would have been all world with better vision. Ford was a great receiver without speed. One thing for sure though is you can't coach speed.

The coaches didn't want him, I think he was a silent commit at 1 point but his offer wasn't committable. He is going to drop in rankings, there are like a dozen 3*'s I'd rather have. I mean he just doesn't have the size to handle 15+ touches a game. Trust the process.

Anything to support this? It just seems odd the coaches wouldn't have a committable offer for a 5* RB in their back yard and #1 player in the state who has plenty of time to get to 200lbs if size is the concern. Especially because we have 0 proven RBs currently.

$70M stadium

Crazy, but at the same time with 8 schools in the district and 77k students, was this 12,000 spectator stadium actually big enough?

This brings to mind a postulate that I have seen elsewhere that a lot of kids from big-time Texas high schools like this are over-rated because of all the money that goes into high school football there. Their ratings tend to be more of a reflection of institutional advantages, not necessarily player-specific variables.

The logic behind this postulate is that these players are already playing at their max potential because they have access to college-level (sometimes even pro-level) nutrition, weight training, skill training, etc. So, once they get to college, they do not have any room to develop as players outside of the typical physical changes that happen at that age. All of the players that did not have those institutional advantages eventually catch up or pass them because their initial ratings were more a reflection of their player-specific talents, and talent wins out once you even the playing field.

I'm not claiming that this necessarily applies to this particular player. I also have zero data to back up this opinion. It's just something I keep in mind when looking at kids from the big-time Texas high schools.

"Sooner or later, if man is ever to be worthy of his destiny, we must fill our heart with tolerance."
-Stan Lee

"Never half-ass two things. Whole-ass one thing."
-Ron Swanson

"11-0, bro"
-Hunter Carpenter (probably)

Very interesting concept. I'd have to think there's some weight to that.

I'm theorizing here, but they probably also tend to get top-of-the-line exposure through more camps (a product of the football prowess of the region), technology (think video equipment that puts out highlight reels), etc. These days many recruiting services use those two avenues to set a lot of their evaluations. Naturally giving those players a higher chance to be well-rated.

I don't really buy the concept that since they have institutional advantages that their ceiling is still capped the same as others who see those advantages in college.

This would insinuate that all advantages don't matter with the factor of time - aka you can always catch up. This also states you have a ceiling that is equal to others. Sometimes early on advantages accelerated growth as a player and not all ceilings are created equal.

I don't know if I read it as their ceiling is capped rather than an athlete has X amount of potential as a player that increases at a point of diminishing returns.. These guys with the institutional advantage (Player A) have had more of their potential exposed at an earlier stage so they are playing high school football at a higher level than the average high schooler (Player B) around the country. They are rated higher because they appear better but once in the college programs, the other players are able to bring out more of their potential with access to the same resources. Player A may have a max potential of 85 and high school exposed 70 of it while Player B has a max potential of 95 but only had exposed 60 of it due to limited resources. 2 years in a college program and Player A is up to 80 but Player B is up to 85. They both continue to improve but the rule of diminishing returns favors Player B now.

This is by an individual basis of course. Player A could have a max of 110 and Player B a max of 80 just due to who they are.

Very over simplifying of what could be a complex deal but OP has a very interesting theory about it.

"I'm too drunk to taste this chicken" - Colonel Sanders via Ricky Bobby

The best way I have heard this theorized is Maimi in the 80s, they found kids that weren't getting 3 meals a day, had never seen a weight room, never had new equipment (probably didnt fit right). But they saw what they could be once they had structure and food and proper training. And Miami them beat everyone. You here it when a lot of the alumni players talk, they want Miami to not care about stars and go get local guys like them.

So the crazy thing here is this kid had NO rating when I checked last night after I saw OP's post. I figured he would have a rating today since he had a P-5 offer. Four stars though??? He goes from unrated to 4 stars? This happened with Kim (QB) as well but they rated him a 3 star the day after his offer/signing

He was rated as a four star since at least April 23, which is when the last 247 article was written on him titled:

Four-star DB Washington recaps Texas spring game

Ah, I think he just didn't have a composite rating. Good catch

Might be a disconnect between 247's internal rankings, which have him as a 4*, and their composite rankings, which have no rankings for him as Scout and ESPN have yet to create a profile for him.

2/4 4* stayed in state in Pennsylvania plus 2 4* juco players from Pennsylvania went to Penn State.

2/11 4* stayed in state in Virginia

How many of those top 10 didn't stay in state because Penn State didn't want them? I don't think Penn state even offered half their top 10 in state last year. Those situations aren't comparable at all. Like look at the year before Pennsylvania had 11 4* players so Penn State was able to snag 6 of them while the state of Virginia had 7 last year Tech got 1.

Per Rivals, in 2018 5 of 10 in PA stayed in state. 2017? 4 of 10. 2016? 4 of 10.

In VA 2018 3 of 10, 2 of 10 in 2017, 0 of 10 in 2016. Also in 2016-18 the top player in PA stayed in-state. That hasn't happened in VA since 2012.
