OT: 2019 European Summer Transfer Window (EPL and other leagues)

This thread is not about the NCAA Portal or US college athletics. It's about world soccer. Not tryna clickbait nobody

The 2019 transfer window is open for the major European leagues. Feel free to discuss comings and goings in this thread. Maybe Nabil Fekir will sign for Liverpool!

For me this summer has the potential to be quite exciting. It seems all but certain (at the moment) that Hazard will come to Madrid this summer, and likely for a reasonable fee relative to this absurdly inflated market post-Neymar transfer because of his only having a year left on his contract with Chelsea. I would be shocked if we did not get Hazard for less than Barcelona paid for each of Coutinho and Dembele, which makes me very, very happy. I think the final price will be somewhere around €100m.

Once the transfer window officially opens silly season will be in full effect. There is genuinely nothing in sports quite like the constant onslaught on misinformation, conflicting information, agent's drumming up interest/value with fake stories, club's using favored journalists to test transfer rumor reactions, etc. that comes with the European transfer market.

We still have a CL final to go, so I'm sure that the chatter inside the LFC camp will be minimal for the next two weeks. I am hoping that we bring in similar personalities into the fold. I don't foresee us spending a boatload of money, seeing as we only fell short by 1 point to City. However, I'm sure City will spend a good amount to reinforce some of the aging stars they have, so it would behoove us to add a piece or two.

My hope is that a lot of the reinforcements will come from in house, a la TAA (I'm looking at you Brewster, Ki-Jana). Hoping we can grab a LFB option to support Robertson, a 4th choice for the front 3, and if Mignolet leaves, a tenured backup keeper. If they can do that amount of business shrewdly and on the cheap, I'm ready to head into the next campaign with that type of squad. As much as I would love DeLigt, I don't think CB is a area of need, especially the way Matip played and the way Gomez and the Colossus were playing together earlier in the season.

What I would give for united to sign Bruno Fernandes. That said looks like daniel james from swansea is almost done which I dont mind hes young and freaky fast could be a good weapon off the bench with his pace.

BVB have made early moves to spend the Pulisic money, bringing in: Julian Brandt from Leverkusen, Thorgan Hazard from Gladbach, and Nico Schulz from Hoffenheim

BVB are always efficient with spending the spoils of the talents they develop. They are a very well-run club.

Arsenal will reportedly have about $11 to spend on transfers if the Europa League final goes south and there is no CL football. Thrilled about an owner-driven journey to the middle of the table in the coming years.

Arsenal looking to sign another keeper tells me that once again we don't plan to address the lack of backline talent.

VTMidge

I'm not worried about that specific instance. Arsenal is looking to replace their #3 keeper, from what it looks like. Shouldn't really have a big $ impact.

There have been plenty of rumblings about Manolas and some others. I'm not going to get too upset about "budget" signings this summer because in reality we did really well in the last summer window with limited money. The problem is that even if we sign good players for low prices, we won't have enough money to fill all the spots that need filling if the reports about our funds are accurate.

VT Class of '12 (MSE), MVBone, Go Hokies!

Humorous thing about funds at Arsenal.....Wenger kept his job for so long because we weren't blowing budgets like other clubs to sign big players. Where has all that $$ gone? I know recently we have spent to get guys in but no where near what we should have had. The signing at keep is to replace Cech, although we can't make him leave because it would cost us to much. Thankfully Leno has done well and not had injury issues.

VTMidge

When Wenger was counting pocket change, we were paying off a large amount of stadium debt. The fact that he kept us in the UCL for that long is nothing short of miraculous honestly. Note how Spurs didn't buy anyone last summer. There's more TV money these days so they're not going to feel the pain as much as we did, but it's the same deal.

Also we've sold very poorly over the years (the Ox sale being the only one anywhere close to the good value Liverpool and Spurs have gotten from their recent sales). And our wage bill is all messed up, something they claim they're trying to salvage now.

Martinez will likely be our #2 keeper next season. If he's not, he'll want to leave too. I'm 95% sure the next GK signing will be a #3.

VT Class of '12 (MSE), MVBone, Go Hokies!

We need at least 3 players. A decent Ramsey replacement, A back line player or 2 and a threat off the wings. It would be nice to get 1 more striker to bring in for Auba or Laka late in the game. The focus though has to be defense and a replacement for Ramsey. My guess is we'll have a little more than the reports suggest after we sell a few guys.

Correy

~$3.50 each on a defender, central midfielder, and winger leaves 50 cents left over for a #3 GK, yeah? this match makes me sad

Leroy sane might be going to Bayern for a reported 100 million. Word is he wants to stay but Bayern really want him

I'd be surprised if City let him go, how else are they going to rebuild for some of the age that is starting to show? (Aguero, Silva, Fernandiho)

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ #YNWA

Leroy wants to be a first choice XI guy and he likely won't be next season, and some guys don't want to wait until a spot opens up. I'm not saying it's the right/wrong choice for him to leave or stay, but all these guys are different and value different things/goals in their careers.

Oh I perfectly understand that. But the club has some skin in the game too, to decide whether they want to let him go or not. As a Red, I will not miss him AT ALL, I think he's got a lot of talent, and I think most City supporters would hate to see him go.

Apparently has some work ethic issues. I'd be sad to see him go but he is crazy inconsistent. I hope he can figure it out I'd love to keep him, I'm less worried about fernandinho after gundogans appearances at the end of the season

We so desperately need some help at that position though, more than anything. I think stones will rebound just fine. I'm really sad we let jadon sancho go. I'd feel so good about this situation if we let him walk.

Really? Hard to believe De Gea wouldn't get the vote on this one. Pogba actually makes United worse when he's on the field...seemingly, anyway. I wonder if there's a statistical analysis of their record when Pogba plays versus when he doesn't....like Spurs actually have a better record when Harry Kane is out of the team than when he's playing.

De Gea has shown hes human this year and I'd argue talent wise pogba is better right now. It doesnt really matter whos on the field they look like shit atm to be frank. Losing de gea wouldnt kill uniteds ability to actually score goals the way losing paul would in my mind. Doesnt matter whos between the sticks when you have Jones smalling and ashley fucking young in front of them we're going to concede goals no matter what with the three stooges in defence. Sort out the back four and add some spine to the midfield and I think we will see the better pogba and de gea though.

General question: How did you pick your EPL team? I want to start casually watching the EPL but don't know where to start and have no natural ties to any particular club.

In that situation the best thing to do is just start watching on Saturday/Sunday mornings for a few months when the new season starts, and one team will strike you more than the others.

You can try to pick one beforehand, but if you are going in with no pre-conceived notions or ties to certain teams, why not just see which team you are drawn to organically?

This is what I did -- started following the Saturday morning games (as well as midweek EPL/FA Cup/UCL games that I was picking for Streak For The Cash), and that's how I wound up stuck with Arsenal. It's the best advice

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

I became a MC fan when MU was on top and they were second fiddle in their own city...........I typically pull for the underdog.......I am a Tech fan, duh. I'm not a huge soccer fan, but Premier League is entertaining TV on cold, rainy winter Saturday and Sunday mornings.

My sister is a Liverpool fan so this past season was particularly exciting.

Holy Hell! I took the survey and it gave me MU......hilarious! Go Man City!

Yeah and I got Chelsea... Which is about l the worst possible answer it could have given.

VT Class of '12 (MSE), MVBone, Go Hokies!

For me I read an article by a guy who went on a tour of all of the EPL stadiums one season, and he came away with feeling like Anfield was the best environment. I also had an affinity for Klopp when he was at Dortmund so it was a natural fit for me and his managerial style. Lastly, I was a Lebron James fan a couple of years ago, and I found out that he has a small percentage of the club, I figure if he could resonate with an inner city born kid like him, I would find something to love about it as well.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ #YNWA

Agree with all of the other posts about watching and seeing who feels best, but I'd say don't feel tempted to pick a lovable loser in this sport. You could very well lose your club (assuming you don't live in the UK) due to the promotion/relegation system in which the worst 3 teams leave the EPL every season and play in the lower tier until they can, if ever, get promoted again.

If you choose a team that gets relegated you may very well lose the ability to see them play at all because the lower tier leagues don't have TV contracts here. It would be a totally unforeseen catastrophe if Manchester City/United, Chelsea, Arsenal, Tottenham, or Liverpool are ever relegated at this point in the sport. You'll most likely have a club you can follow for life out of those 6.

When I was picking, you could only ever really see ManU, Arsenal, and Liverpool on TV here, so those were my choices. And Arsenal just so happened to have Bergkamp, Henry, Pires, et al. at this time and played the most beautiful game in the league.

VT Class of '12 (MSE), MVBone, Go Hokies!

There's also a difference between Lovable Losers and Plucky Underdogs, and plucky underdogs can be fun to follow too. There is a decidedly second-tier group of teams that should solidly stick around in the top-flight for quite some time, barring a major change in ownership situation: Everton, Leicester City, West Ham, maybe Wolves. Newcastle is also a fun club, but they're a little more high variance.

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

I've always understood that Newcastle's fanbase is absolutely rabid and it's a real shame that they have the Dan Snyder of the EPL as owner. Would be a great club to support if the guy would piss off and take away the annual uncertainty about their ability to stay up.

I have been an Arsenal fan since I was young (mid 1980's) and it came about because the cannon. I have seen this question asked before on here. My answer then was that Arsenal is the Virginia Tech of EPL. Arsenal had always hung their hats on past league results, finishing in the top 4, and doing well against rivals. Virginia Tech has the consecutive 10 win season, bowl streak, and beating up on UVA. New coach came in a couple of seasons ago at Arsenal to replace Arsene Wenger who has been there from 1996-2018. Wenger found success during the early and middle stages of his tenure. Lost his grip on the team towards the end and results slipped. Emery came in and is working to rebuild. Beamer was at Tech since the dawn of time. I won't talk about his tenure because I am not worthy of it. But we all saw. And it sounded the same as Arsenal. Watching both teams gives me slight heart attacks because they play to the level of their competition. The both lose games that they shouldn't, win games they shouldn't, and just when you feel like giving up they do something brilliant. Virginia Tech = Arsenal and I love but hate it.

VTMidge

My first love was actually Wolverhampton, I loved those jerseys and colors in middle school but dear lord the club was mismanaged and then got relegated and impossible to watch. They returned again and everytime they came up they were relegated again pretty quickly it became difficult to catch any games and to become attached to players prior to streaming being a thing. They were eventually run into the ground which just made me sad. Still have a bit of a soft spot for em but I would absolutely reccomend you at least try to pick a club like Everton where you dont have to worry about relegation fears. Albeit with reddit streams these days championship games are still pretty easy to catch

Taylor, looking desperately throws it deep..HAS A MAN OPEN DANNY COALE WITH A CATCH ALL THE WAY DOWN TO THE FIVE!!!!....hes still open

Soccer Reddit streams died a painful death it seems. That said with ESPN + it's not too bad to watch the championship anymore. I listen to the ESPN FC podcast and caught offside they usually keep up on the lower leagues to help keep along with that

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

I think what hurt Wenger is twofold. 1st and probably the largest factor is the entry of the free spending Middle East and Russian money at Chelsea and Man City. That made it harder to stay in the top 4. Then there were some mismanagement issues. How in the hell we allow Sanchez to get into the last year if his deal, Ozil as well and then let Rambo go for free? That was bad management. Then you see Liverpool get over 100mil for coutinho and spend it to shore up its defense. We're about to see the spuds sell Erickson for some coin and reinvest as well.

Correy

Also don't rule out other leagues (notably La Liga, Serie A, Bundesliga). I'm a Roma fan for example. I was drawn to Serie A due to Italian heritage and growing up watching the Italian national team. If you have any personal connection to a certain country that could be a route to finding a club. Also different leagues have different styles of play so you might prefer one.

All of that said, I must admit that the Premier League the most easy to "casually watch" due to its availability in the U.S., though others are improving

Another reason I love Dortmund too, German polish heritage has always given me a soft spot for them particularly when Lewandowski was lighting it up in my college years. I loved those klopp teams, and I still really love me some Jurgen klopp, dudes really likable

I owe my support of Arsenal mainly in part to HokieBone12. I mainly supported Bayern, and when I would talk to him about soccer he would talk about Arsenal all the time. So I asked him about the club and he showed me clips and other highlights of recent years (this was probably 2012-2013?). This was about the same time EPL started airing on NBC Sports and I started to check out a few Arsenal games and fell in love with how they played. Been hooked ever since then. It also helps that a few a-hole fans really turned me off to Chelsea and Man United.

LAR '12 MVBones Go Hokies! USA!

My advice is to wait until Monday afternoon, then you'll have the mighty Aston Villa as an EPL club to choose from as well.

Hahaha. You really are a glutton for punishment following Aston Villa and Virginia Tech! Bless your heart.

VTMidge

It's like the crazy guy from Dead Man On Campus. There's no thrill if there's not a chance you'll actually die. But I will tell you, it makes days like Monday that much sweeter when you've been dragged through shit for the last five or six years.

Told y'all. Support the team with a captain who grew up in the club, Super Jack Grealish, looks and talks like a Peaky Blinder and takes every opportunity to poke fun at their closest rivals to the point where their last game away at Birmingham City, a fan ran onto the field and punched him in the head. So Super Jack got up, dusted himself off and went on to score the winning goal. Also, they signed a midget meathead from Scotland last summer, John McGinn, who they couldn't play the last couple games of the season because he'd gotten too many yellow cards and if he got one more, he'd get suspended for 3 games and would've missed the playoffs. This team is so much fun.

Take this with a very large grain of salt...

Supposedly there are reports out of Italy that Pep is leaving Man City for Juve for 4 years €24m effective June 4th

I think Arsenal is a better example. Long tenured coach, failed to win a CL despite winning multiple league titles during their "prime window," elevated the program to a new level during the 90's and early 2000's, has had "money" issues to complain about (Transfer spending for Arsenal, recruiting spending for VT), new coach coming in after long tenured coach who completely changed the direction of the club/program and elevated them to new heights.

I think you can make some Tottenham parallels but the late 90's/2000's Arsenal and VT are just too similar imo.

Also, big cannon.

VT Class of '12 (MSE), MVBone, Go Hokies!

Arsenal doesn't fit at all. They are one of the most successful teams in English history...I believe they're third place for the number of trophies won. Tottenham is historically a cup team-they've only been champions of England twice, which is way down the list.

VT has won conference titles but never a national championship, and before 1995 didn't really do much of anything historically on a national stage. There isn't really a good comparison in England, but I guess Spurs fits best. Actually, maybe Leicester City if you equate one-time Champions with a national championship appearance.

Arsenal, Liverpool, Man United and Everton are considered historical English blue bloods. They have the most trophies. It's hard for younger fans to realize this but Arsenal have been in England's top division longer than anyone else and Everton was a power for the majority of the 1980s but hasn't won a major trophy since 1995.

Chelsea and Man City are considered clubs that bought their trophies as their collective histories were average at best before being bought by billionaires in the last 20 years.

This is actually a pretty good debate-who is VT's EPL equivalent...I'm not sure that club is even in the Premier League currently. Fulham might actually be a good candidate: working class mentality, never been champions but play an exciting style with a venerable stadium and hardcore fan support.

Does that make Liverpool the Miami of the EPL? Lots of money, historical success, won the whole thing (CL) a handful of times, but can't do jack shit in their own league?

Yeah and I don't have a problem with that. It's an identity. That's part of the reason I felt connected to united as a Tampa Bay Bucs fan. My beef is with the Pool fans who think they are making some kind of trendy, underdog pick by cheering for Liverpool when I know FAR more Liverpool fans than United fans. Right on...I went to the lane when liverpool played spurs in a league cup game...my dad is a HUGE jimmy greaves (Spurs legend from the 60s) fan so Spurs are his second team. He's definitely a red on June 1st, though. I've always liked Spurs, good fans and good brand of football...exciting club doing it the right way.

Did it occur to you we might not even have to have this discussion if you weren't gatekeeping folk's fandom? Not everyone can afford a trip to europe to see their club play. No need to shame people for it and question their allegiance.

The particularly ironic part of gatekeeping fandom with an act that requires above average financial means is that the entire history of English football (and most of European football) was born of and representative of the working class. With the crazy amounts of money in sports these days it's certainly lost some of that over time, but even to this day season tickets for European football are way more affordable than American sports.

There were 2 Armenian teams in the UEL this year, I believe. Imagine if one of them made the final. Of course that was highly unlikely and awarding Azerbaijan the final was totally fine and risk free.

Unlikely like Leicester City winning the league. Totally impossible, right?

Looking more and more likely Newcastle will finally be sold to a relative of the owner of man city for roughly 350 million dollars which could be big in the long run that clubs a sleeping giant waiting to come back into relevance. Always loved what Newcastle are as big of anuts fan base they have I've always felt bad for what Ashley has dragged them through and with a good manager already there if they spend well it could be interesting to see where they go from here.

Not to be a stick in the mud, but Newcastle haven't won the league since Calvin Coolidge was president, so I'm not sure they count as a sleeping giant. Unless we're talking Rip Van Winkle, century-long-medically-induced-coma levels of sleeping. But just like Man City, who was an also-ran for their entire existence until a billionaire royal bought them and then paid $400M for the naming rights to their stadium to get around FFP rules, Newcastle certainly has the ability to become a super-club if someone is willing to spend the hundreds of millions to do it. Hell, Havant and Waterlooville FC could do the same thing, it just takes patience and an obscene amount of money. My question with clubs that do this; what happens when the billionaire gets bored?

Its amazed me even in the mediocraty that theyve had for years under ashley the stadium is always packed regardless which shows the hunger of the fan base. I think the biggest difference is that Newcastle has basically been as irrelevant as Chelsea, City, and PSG were before their takeovers but had a packed stadium full of die hards the whole time.

No one will ever confuse St. James' Park for an "emptyhad". They were mostly packing that place in their relegation seasons. Should be very interesting to see how much the guy invests. Apparently he's not from the core branch of the family that runs the UAE. Like he's massively rich but not nearly as rich as the guy who owns City.

I personally won't be interested in watching a league that comes down to "which sheikh has the most money". I know it's all about money, obviously, but that's just not interesting to me.

VT Class of '12 (MSE), MVBone, Go Hokies!

I mean, isn't that what has basically happened to US sports? Its all about the money. In baseball and basketball, if you aren't a luxury tax team, you have no prayer, and even the ones with a Cap, you basically have to spend at or close to it every year to have a chance.

Yep and I don't like watching MLB or NBA either. I'm not saying people shouldn't enjoy those leagues, I just think it takes some of the fun out of it for me.

VT Class of '12 (MSE), MVBone, Go Hokies!

I totally agree and it's definitely why the NFL is the #1 sport in this country. It's just not possible to buy a Super Bowl with free agents every year. Jackass Dan Snyder learned that the hard way.

The problem with the EPL is that the clubs exist in the UEFA system as well. You can't have a salary cap in England unless everyone agrees to join hands and kiss the Champions League goodbye. No one is keeping up with Juve, PSG, the Spanish clubs, etc. with a salary capped domestic league.

It's never going to change...so I can't blame fans for embracing their sheikh if they get one.

I mean the average NFL franchise right now is worth more than $2billion in the open market, so you could make the argument that the NFL is just like european soccer, just where all the big rich teams are just already consolidated into once place.

I had this conversation recently as an offshoot of the "looks like newcastle are gonna get an oil daddy" conversation:

I would much rather have a league with 6-7 strong clubs who are going for it and can make their argument for why they're going to win the league that year than a monopolistic league (Juve in serie a, PSG in ligue 1) or a league with two favorites and maybe a third introduction (Barca, Real, and Atletico in la liga; Bayern, BVB, and ??? in germany). The English league is the best one to watch because of this, and the more money in the league that is available to a lower-table side club, the more interesting it is.

Never did like this sport.

But seriously, what an awful year for my two favorite sports. Tech and Arsenal football are just...sick. And there are just no obvious cures on the horizon. The stuff with Buzz Williams as well...hating my sporting life so much right now.

Arsenal needs to puuuuurge like they've just had gas station sushi. But meh, again they've bottled the end of this season but if you'd have told me in August that we'd be one game off top 4 and in the EL finals I would be pretty happy, probably.

Comunicado Oficial came through clutch on my way home from work today. It was a poorly kept secret, but still happy to see it was official when I got home.

I think that Daniel James signing could end up being great business if he develops. At the reported price it's hard to get any young, promising players at a price like that.

I'm happy with the Daniel James signing better bit of business and he's got the physical traits needs to get better at finishing and crossing and he has pace to worry folks

Slight thread hijack, but it's not worth its own; any other soccer fans at the Virginia Beach sand soccer tournament this weekend?

My team used to play that every year. Always my favorite - it was the only one where I could ever score

I was invited to with a buddy but turned it down. I'm hilariously accident prone and really dont wanna shatter my leg again. That being said I was at his games!

Yikes, a shattered leg sounds awful, hope all is good now. This was our first experience with sand soccer, and it was cool, but definitely not something for the injury prone. I joked with some of the other parents that it was kickboxing with a soccer ball.

Comunicado Oficial season in full swing :)

Saw some crazy thing about Real now having a crazy 330m euro net spend so far in 2019 and still not done (maybe Eriksen?) - who do you think they will try to move on to offset that, James and Bale?

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

If they think they could get 100m for both those guys theyd have to be criminally insane, James is at best 30-35 mil for the right team, and bale is well a baley big problem.

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

In the current market I expect to get €40-60m for James. He's a great player, he just doesn't fit in most clubs as the traditional 10 is tactically restrictive (as a result, out of style) and he is not pacey enough to have the versatility to be an effective winger.

With both players they just need to find a team willing to give them a chance. I saw rumors linking James with arsenal and almost pissed myself thinking of him and ozil together they would get destroyed. Maybe they could do a swap ozil for James or something like that not that I imagine madrid would want ozil back.

Bale is being bizarre to say the least I think hes bluffing to make the club be the first to flinch so he doesnt lose out on too much money but who knows.

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

The Bale situation has been discussed ad nauseam in Madrid circles and in general transfer news for some time now. We certainly got ourselves into this situation by giving him such an enormous contract not long before he started becoming unreliable due to constant injuries and his performances on the pitch became increasingly inconsistent and volatile ranging from spectacular (CL Final 2018) to worst player on the pitch. Of course, we were unlucky in that he has become such an extreme injury risk.

His wages are certainly the biggest issue in getting a move anywhere, but that's where the situation takes on another element. Bale has a contract, and he has every right to see that contract out to the end, but is that worth possibly wasting the final years of his prime as a reserve or super sub? It brings into question his desire to actually play the game, and whether or not he'd rather just be collecting his check and golfing already. If he truly has the passion to play 1st team football again it seems there are only three options:

1) He fights for his spot at Real Madrid (he's been doing this the last 2-3 seasons really, and he's not been successful)

2) He gets loaned and we pay part (likely over half) of his huge wages to make the deal possible

3) He is willing to take a paycut (still would likely make enormous wages) to play elsewhere permanently and revitalize his career. Unless he goes to China or something and maybe he can maintain his wages.

Time will tell.

We have plenty of assets (35+ squad members right now, out of a max of 25 allowed in La Liga) to move and are in no danger of FFP trouble. We've hardly spent at all the previous seasons, especially in relation to the enormous amount of revenue we generate organically every season. We are also knocking out all these signings before July 1st so that they will all back count to the previous year for accounting (and FFP, though like I said earlier, we are not in problematic position) purposes.

Here is the squad/players under contract at the moment:

Strikers: Benzema, Jovic, Mariano, Raul de Tomas, Borja Mayoral

Wingers: Hazard, Asensio, Lucas Vazquez, Bale, Rodrygo, Vinicius, Brahim, Ødegaard

Midfielders: Casemiro, Llorente, Modric, Kroos, Valverde, Ceballos, Kovacic, Isco, James Rodriguez, Oscar Rodriguez (I believe technically registered with Castilla), and Lucas Silva (I think).

Fullbacks: Marcelo, Mendy, Reguilon, Theo Hernandez, Carvajal, Odriozola, Hakimi

Centerbacks: Ramos, Varane, Militao, Vallejo, Nacho

Goalkeepers: Courtois, Navas, Lunin, Zidane

There are plenty of assets to move within this squad depending on how things play out. Obviously, a notable portion of this group will be loaned (or already is under a multi-year loan contract) out to reach the 25 man squad limit, or sold with buyback clauses.

who do you think makes sense (or is likely) to permanently move on, if anyone?

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

Strikers: Benzema, Jovic, Mariano, Raul de Tomas, Borja Mayoral

I think we sell Mayoral if we can, sell one of Raul de Tomas or Mariano, keep the other.

Wingers: Hazard, Asensio, Lucas Vazquez, Bale, Rodrygo, Vinicius, Brahim, Ødegaard

I don't think we would sell Asensio, but if we got an absurd offer we might. LV is debated hotly (and a meme lord) within the team as not being RM quality, but he is a high work rate, versatile player content with being a squad option, and unless that changes and he wants to start somewhere, he will stay. We sell Bale if someone is willing to pay

Midfielders: Casemiro, Llorente, Modric, Kroos, Valverde, Ceballos, Kovacic, Isco, James Rodriguez, Oscar Rodriguez (I believe technically registered with Castilla), and Lucas Silva (I think).

Llorente, Ceballos, Isco, are all too difficult to project what we will do so I won't try but they will likely all fetch solid fees. I think we try to sell James, Lucas Silva, Kovacic (Chelsea has right to buy at the moment), Oscar loaned.

Fullbacks: Marcelo, Mendy, Reguilon, Theo Hernandez, Carvajal, Odriozola, Hakimi

Think we see Theo sold, Reguilon loaned, and possibly Marcelo sold, but I think (and personally want) him to stay.

Centerbacks: Ramos, Varane, Militao, Vallejo, Nacho

Based on numbers I doubt we sell anyone unless we buy another CB. If anyone is getting sold though it will be Vallejo or Nacho.

Goalkeepers: Courtois, Navas, Lunin, Zidane

Sadly, I think Navas is sold to be a full time starter somewhere. I personally like him better than Courtois and he is a club legend for me after the CL 3peat, but Courtois is the younger, long term option. Luca Zidane is not a future RM keeper who at some point will almost certainly move on, possibly this summer.

Ultimately, it's really difficult to see how things play out. Nobody really knows what will happen, particularly with our midfield as there are conflicting reports about who Zidane plans to count on next season plus all the midfielders we are being linked to in the transfer market at the moment (Pogba, Ndombele, Eriksen, etc). It wouldn't surprise me to see some "shock" type sales of players like Isco, Casemiro, or Modric, but I'm not exactly expecting them.

An outside perspective from a stream of tweets from Sergio Valentin who follows RM for esradio and libertaddigital:

According to Sergio Valentin, 16 Real Madrid players are on the market. Isco, Bale, James Rodriguez, Kovacic, Keylor Navas, Lucas Vasquez, Ceballos, Llorente, Nacho, Vallejo, Mariano, Theo, Mayoral, Raul De Tomas, Luca Zidane, Lucas Silva. Marcelo will be allowed to leave if he wants.

Doesn't mean we are trying to sell all of these people, but that we are willing to hear offers for them.

If they could move Bale I think they would in a heartbeat but I don't know anyone, outside of maybe ManU, that would want to take on his wages

Edit: Just saw something on espn that they rejected talks with Madrid

There are rumors (obligatory grain of salt warning) that Utd would be willing to part with both Pogba and Lukaku if the prices were right. They could have a pretty massive warchest if they fully back Ole and let him reshape the club.

Honestly not gonna moan about lukaku at all as long as we get 70-80 mil for him dunno if thats realistic but I dont see why not. He fits a direct Conte styled approach not the Ole way, whatever that may be. Pogba splits alot of fans but personally if we recoup what we spent I wont cry over him going either so we can get a player or another midfielder that is willing to do more tracking back and all. Pogba tactically is hard to work with unless youre willing to play him in a 4-3-3 where the other two do the running and defending allowing him to kind of wander and pick out pockets of space. Challenge is united dont have the midfield to support him and I wonder if Ole would rather use a 4-2-3-1 or something that might not best use Pogba and make him a liability in the midfield. I've been curious to see if they could work him into a number 10 like role in a diamond midfield with three other mids behind to work off the ball and let him create for the front group but it still doesnt seem like it would work all that well.

Marcos Llorente has moved across Madrid from Real to Atletico. Reported fee of 40m euros.

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

Frustrating as a Madridista, but Llorente deserves to play and he clearly isn't going to be first choice in our plans under Zidane. I still don't like that he is going to Atleti, both as a Madrid fan and because he is unlikely to reach his full potential in such a defensive team. I think his best role so far in his career has been as a regista, or at least possession-based anchor in a team that likes to control the ball and run of play. Ultimately still happy that he will get the first team minutes he deserves, and it's good business on our end in that we profited substantially off of him, but it's always sad to see a youth player who grew up a Madridista sign for a rival.

Looks like Rafa Benitez and Newcastle couldn't agree on an extension, and so he will leave the club when his deal expires in a few days. Another managerial vacancy, but also it could mean Newcastle becomes more active with comings and goings.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka is set to join United in a reported 50m pound move.

Benfica have confirmed that they've received a staggering 126m euro bid from Atletico for Joao Felix.

Manchester City are close to signing Rodri from Atletico for a reported 65m pounds. It's mildly amusing to me that amid all the transfer inflation, this would be a club record. Manchester City are as guilty as anyone for contributing to the inflated prices and valuations, but they've done it almost exclusively by inflating wages for established stars and players closer to the end of their deal rather than getting into bidding wars and paying way over the odds for potential.

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

Dunno why Felix would go to atletico if he wants to develop as an attacking player but who knows I guess.

Thank god United are going to get Wan-Bissaka and hopefully it means the end of the heart attack of young as a full back hes been awful the last few years it will be pleasant to finally have a natural defender at that position. Still huge amounts of work needed for united though

Atletico is pretty well known for producing a lot of great attackers, particularly strikers, and this has continued even with Simeone's more defensive, counter-attacking style.

yeah, plenty of excellent attackers have played under simeone, even if most (or all, once Griezmann leaves) have moved onto bigger clubs. if you can pick a pass and play fast, you can cut your teeth at atletico in a big way

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

Oh I'm not saying they dont produce quality strikers but it seems odd kind of like Lemar last summer. If youre a defender Simeone is a brilliant coach to play for but attackers not as much. Just my thoughts kind of like say Mou coaching a striker its kind of a weird look

But look at what Mourinho did with players like Drogba and Eto'o and Milito and Hazard and Diego Costa. Wesley Sneijder! When you don't have much of the ball, efficiency when you do have it and maximizing the chances you do get is key

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

I think a lot of people didn't watch European soccer back then. I would wager a lot of people on here don't remember when his Porto side that won the CL dominated possession and took the game to giants at Old Trafford and at the Bernabeu, or when he won the treble with Inter, or when his 11/12 Real Madrid side took down Pep's Barca in their peak with a 100 point league season where we were scoring goals for fun (121 league goals) and broke just about every La Liga record in the process.

I've said this before but Mourinho is at the highest tier of managers for me, and he is too often viewed with recency bias.

Yeah, i first got into following the european leagues around 2008-2009 or so, and clearly remember that Inter side being impossible to break down, even with 10 men (Barcelona needed to, Barcelona couldn't)

Mou is great tactically, but his personality can be grating. And he definitely seemed to wear out his welcome everywhere he managed except Porto (to my knowledge)

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

I remember his old teams and would marvel at him tactfully but as a man United fan I got to watch him very very closely and that's most likely blurred my opinion on him since at United he was an absolute ass at times. I mean that last statement is clearly wrong if our max buy is 62 million. When have we paid way over the odds for youth talent? Sane? Gabriel jesus? And while we overpaid stars early I think we have a spectacular wage system now. I'm not saying city havent contributed to price inflation (about a decade ago) but I think now days I think the shattering prices for players are more on barca (see one coutinho) and psg (neymar) for just throwing stupid money at players

Taylor, looking desperately throws it deep..HAS A MAN OPEN DANNY COALE WITH A CATCH ALL THE WAY DOWN TO THE FIVE!!!!....hes still open

I would say you had a part in raising the price of defenders with the fullback purchases 2(?) summers ago and Stones and Laporte signings at CB. I think many clubs have played a part in this, but obviously the Neymar buyout clause purchase and Barca's subsequent severe overpays for Dembele and Coutinho have caused potentially irreparable damage to the market.

Oh mendy.... yeah still think fullbacks are such a premium in this day and age. Super underappreciated. Talented fullbacks are few and far between but name the best teams over the last decade and you'll notice spectacular and consistent fullback play I'm still shocked the values on them are even higher personally

Taylor, looking desperately throws it deep..HAS A MAN OPEN DANNY COALE WITH A CATCH ALL THE WAY DOWN TO THE FIVE!!!!....hes still open

I was just saying City were one of the participants in jumping the market forward for defenders. I'm not saying it wasn't good business or that City is solely responsible. Obviously Madrid has majorly contributed to this over the years as well, among many other clubs. Quality fullbacks make a huge difference in the modern game, providing width and sometimes even midfield cover type roles if inverted. There are a lot of good deals to be had at fullback. Personally, I think the majority of business City has done has been quite good.

Oh no I completely agree, and I wouldnt say good on the fullback front. Some of our biggest purchases have been that position and I'm still not in love with our options. I mean shoot weve spent a fortune on kolorov (eh) clichy wasnt cheap (yikes) mendy was a fortune (double yikes) walker has been good but I wouldnt call him a strength of this roster. I mean I've never been so thrilled to have a youth talent come up in angelino if only because theres a chance well have a homegrown player filling in at fullback. I'm so jealous of liverpool's fb options. TAA is the real fuckin deal and Robertson is a damn engine

Dont forget Man united throwing dumb money for donkey brains like lukaku who couldnt lay a brick in a field. Too many big clubs have gone nuts and eventually it has to come back to reason one day especially after the coutinho buy by barca and now players like bale whos on a kings fee doing nothing but golfing and raking it in. Eventually clubs have to realize how much they waste and start getting smarter.

Reported mutual interest between Arsenal and Wilfried Zaha....turns out Palace values him rather highly and have to ask for even more because Utd gets 25% of the sale due to a sell on clause. Not happening on a mid-table budget.

Ozil and Mustafi are still in the club.

For desperately needed defenders...they say we're still in for Tierney from Celtic and a young guy who will have to first return to his Ligue 1 side for a year on loan or there's no deal.

Big club business happening this summer, boys.

The Saliba deal would still make me really happy even though it doesn't immediately benefit us. Tierney would be great business as well.

I'd love to somehow get Zaha but I don't think he's worth what they're asking, even if we could afford it.

VT Class of '12 (MSE), MVBone, Go Hokies!

Can they? Maybe, they have a lot of money. They at this very moment, and for several years, have had the highest wage bill in all of soccer. They are already operating in what is a very risky wage to income ratio, and Griezmann and Neymar would move that needle substantially into more precarious territory.

If they want to go full who cares about the back line and just go for scoring more goals than the other team every game sure, but I dont see how you can get all of them on the field at once without issues in midfield in particular getting overrun by teams like liverpool etc would be easier to have happen. Messi isnt tracking back to defend nor is neymar or griezmann so against wee opposition sure but on the big stage I dont see how it could work unless you rotated them all.

Not to mention actually affording this, only way I see it happening is if both coutinho and dembele get sold for decent prices but you have to rememeber neymar and griezmann are sitting on some huge contracts as well.

Hard to believe how quickly the news changed. Apparently a few days ago Spurs were also in for Saliba and Ceballos both. Interested to see the back line if Tierney comes and we have a healthy Bellerin and Holding, maybe in September or October. There's still the matter of the captain refusing to travel on the summer tour, but hey.

I guess Emery runs a 433 with Everton, who knows? After last year I think there's a desire for this team to have an identity out there.

Good game tonight though. Ozil looked great and Auba is a monster streaking down that right flank. And our youth prospects are in a REALLY good spot right now... John-Jules and Saka and maybe even Nketiah are all looking like contributors (hopefully Nelson as well). Tierney is a very much needed signing, Kola is excellent going forward but just isn't interested in defense, and I like this 4-3-3 Emery is running so we'll need a true LB for that.

Nabil Fekir to Real Betis...raise your hand if you saw that coming, you liar

I saw him getting linked to some La Liga clubs a few weeks ago and was pretty surprised just because he was so locked in for Liverpool last summer. Betis is a good club (6th last season), and Seville is a cool place to live so not such a bad call.

Maybe Nabil Fekir will sign for Liverpool!

I know it doesn't help us this season, but that Saliba deal is huuuuge for us. And I'm very happy with Ceballos, even if it is just a loan.

I read somewhere that Perez offered a gentleman's agreement of sorts to negotiate on a permanent sale of Ceballos next summer. If he's good for us and we make CL the money might actually be there, who knows?

Yeah, there could be all sorts of stuff, I read somewhere on twitter that there was a right of first refusal next summer, but it didn't seem reputable.

22 goals and 11 assists off the wing in ligue 1 last year. Most people think he's the best player in that league outside of PSG. Winger was a massive need for us, and this FAR exceeds anything we hoped could happen this window.

So I'm pretty excited about this. I still have big concerns about the defense but the front 3 or 4 is going to be so, so nasty.

VT Class of '12 (MSE), MVBone, Go Hokies!

Yeah arsenal absolutely need a center back I cant believe they arent breaking the bank for that position. But yeah that front 3 will be really dangerous. Is he more of a speed guy? Possession guy? Like is he more like mane or bernardo silva? I imagine speed

We signed Saliba who will be massive after his loan spell back to St. Etienne. Honestly if we sign Tierney I'll be fine with the defense as is. Sokratis and Holding is a good starting duo and while we'll be dealing with some poor depth, I can't be upset with how the summer seems to be going so far.

VT Class of '12 (MSE), MVBone, Go Hokies!

It's worth noting that Lille have agreed terms with five clubs now for his transfer. It'll come down to where the players wants to go. He's better than Zaha if you're gonna break the bank.

Yeah, I am seeing now it's not a done deal. But I feel pretty good about landing him, unless the other clubs in for him are much bigger. Arsenal generally has good luck landing French players. I don't know a ton about him, but I feel much better paying 80 mil for him than Zaha.

It's said we've paid his agent which Napoli refused to do, and that the player himself picked us. If Or stein says we're in good shape, it's probably going to happen.

I heard 30 mil reported. Don't think Arsenal can afford to pay a team that much to get rid of him a la NBA expiring contract. /sorta

I don't buy those 30 mil reports for a second, but I don't think he's without value for a team that emphasizes defense more than Arsenal does. He's got a horrible penchant for falling asleep at least once a game, but he was good before coming to Arsenal and I don't think he'd be bad for a team that sets up more defensively.

He's also pretty dominant in the air even though he's not the tallest. If we can get 15-20 mil out of him I'll be really glad, for his sake and Arsenal's.

VT Class of '12 (MSE), MVBone, Go Hokies!

Reportedly, he doesn't want to leave. But pretty much everyone at the club seems to want him gone. So I'm happy getting him off the books in any way possible.

Count me in as triggered...

I kid, I kid

I think he's a great signing for you guys, definitely will add some challenges up front for whoever plays the gunners. I wanted him to be a red, but realistically, unless you have Man City, Barca, or RM money, you can't spend that much on a backup winger.

I'm curious to see what you'll do with your backline though, let the summer transfer drama continue!

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ #YNWA

I can see this being a game changer for our attack, and simultaneously take a little pressure off the defense. Last year, Kola was one of our assist leaders and Bellerin seemed to be on a similar pace before his injury, and I think a big reason for that is that none of our wingers naturally want to stay out wide and play the style Emery wants. This signing means we have a legitimate playmaker and threat on the flank and the fullback doesn't have to push so often, leaving our suspect centerbacks exposed.

VT Class of '12 (MSE), MVBone, Go Hokies!

especially if the player supposed to be rotating wide and tracking back to cover for the fullback is someone like ozil (yikes)

last season, emery seemed to try and mitigate that by taking a player out of midfield in favor for a third center back. really hope this really accommodates playing 4 at the back with torreira in front of them. That should allow for Ceballos and midfielder X (ozil, xhaka, mkhi, iwobi, 'douzi) to link play with the PALs up front

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

You hit on another benefit of this signing that I'm loving, Iwobi should be able to move inside on rotational basis. He's a different animal with Nigeria because he can play the 10 (or something close to a 10/8 hybrid maybe).

A little bit of both..obviously not last year with VVD and Alisson. I saw some graphic earlier that they had spent something like 80 million and Liverpool had spent like 2

I mean most was spent on 1 player, and in this day and age 80 mil isnt that outrageous. Weve literally brought in 2 players one of whom was a youth academy prospect that we essentially loaned out, oh and zack steffen. I'm pretty happy with citys offseason

Taylor, looking desperately throws it deep..HAS A MAN OPEN DANNY COALE WITH A CATCH ALL THE WAY DOWN TO THE FIVE!!!!....hes still open

Theyre trying to compete with Real and Barcelona to be one of the premier clubs in world football and if you pay attention thats what Barca and Real do every summer its the key to keeping up top. Liverpools ownership has spent money to get back to the point theyre at now, I'm somewhat surprised how quiet theyve been but it isnt too surprising considering they used money they got from coutinho sale last year to ufnd VVD and allison move.
I'm a united fan so I'm not thrilled with whats happening at city but its what you have to do to get at the level they want to be at and its kind of silly to see so many people getting upset over it all. Shit look at barcelona spending insanely the last few years and they still want neymar this summer as well its just what the biggest clubs do.

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

I know Madrid have spent a ton of money this summer, but it really hadn't been their MO for the few years prior, and for all of Barcelona/PSG's spending they have little to show for it in UCL hardware.

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

Yeah its funny how Madrid and Barca somewhat flipped styles after so many years of la masia (hope I spelled that right) bringing in insane talent RM have somewhat taken that mantle a little and Barca are the ones chasing galacticos.
I just alway chuckle seeing the envious fans who trash those clubs for what they do. Not all clubs are built the same. i think with city you just have to remember they have had to come a long way to get to where they are and in the stupidly priced arms race that is the transfer market that is inflated thanks to the PSG's, Barca, City, United etc it takes a hell of a lot more money now a days to get close to the top. It is intriguing though how Barca and PSG the two biggest spenders have struggled to get the biggest silverware for so long which shows its not always about how much you spend.

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

I think La Masia issues are being blown a bit out of proportion, and it is more of La Masia reverting back to the mean after an ungodly amount of generational talent passing through.

Would totally agree with this I just remember the phase where Barca fans would trash RM for beings the team that spent fortunes while their academy was turning out guys like Xavi and such.

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

If I was a fan during all of that, I would probably be saying the same things to your rivals in that situation. I don't blame RM doing the same if they get that chance.

I'm also not saying there aren't issues with La Masia but I think most of it can be attributed to their terrible management recently.

I think the difference between Barca/Real and City/PSG is that the former are massive global clubs with tradition and history while the latter were basically irrelevant before the Gulf oil came in. It's not the amount of money spent, it's the fact that new money is upsetting the established order in the sport.

Personally, I don't care one bit and I wish a sheikh would buy Arsenal from Stan Kroenke. And then the same sheikh can send his kid to VT and later drop a billion on our athletic department.

And it's not all bad. IMO the mega clubs like RM/Barca/Man Utd still have a key advantage in the long term because having generation after generation of support all over the world seems more stable than the price of oil. Man City is obviously much later to the game in building that kind of global reach, etc.

Nah I'll pass on that style of ownership. Too succeptible to a devastating collapse when the owner gets bored. It can be done correctly, like Liverpool has done it. Don't need a sugar daddy.

VT Class of '12 (MSE), MVBone, Go Hokies!

Looks like United and Leicester have agreed a fee for Maguire paving the path for him to complete his medical and complete the move finally someone to keep smalling or jones out of the lineup. The fee is an absurd amount but hopefully he can give United the ability to build from defence better. Any way you cut it 103 million dollars is alot of dough for a defender.

Rumors of Mesut Ozil moving to DC in January when Rooney leaves.

HokieSpider

I just don't see how that's possible unless Ozil is willing to accept a third of his current salary to make the move. That being said, it would make these Coutinho to Arsenal rumors make a lot more sense.

VT Class of '12 (MSE), MVBone, Go Hokies!

Koscielny to Bordeaux is confirmed. Gunners are short of options at centerback and will probably need to bring someone in (even if it means Tierney at LB and primarily using Monreal as CB cover)

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

Emery reportedly views Tierney as flexible to play CB as well (similar to Nacho) - although not sure how soon he could play with his apparent injury issues. Also have heard they are in for Upemecano from Leipzig. If they get that done, this will be the best window I can remember.

Latest is that Leipzig wants Smith-Rowe as part of the Upemecano deal. I'm sure that's giving them pause, but the need for a CB is kind of critical. Maybe a loan is possible instead.

Still, yeah...put Sanllehi's portrait next to the clock in the stadium if all of this shit pans out.

Decent rumors that a loan is on the table for Leipzig. Shoot even an ESR sale might be worth it for Upemecano in my book. Obviously would much prefer an ESR loan, in fact that'd be a good thing to do regardless of Upemecano.

Kos leaving means I'm 97% sure we're bringing in a CB somehow.

VT Class of '12 (MSE), MVBone, Go Hokies!

Yes, I've seen ESR loan as part of Upe deal. I'm all for that, especially since I think he did well there last season. I guess I would understand if they decide to make it permenant, but I think he has talent and I'd hate to see him become another Gnabry.

ESR can leave as long as there is a buyback or first refusal or sell on clause or something so that when they turn him into 40+ million euros in 2023, Arsenal sees some of it.

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

The only player I'd want would be Pepe, but you can't spend 80m on a backup bench player, unless you have the backing of a oil prince. Just my opinion. As you said, its almost go time, up the Reds!

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ #YNWA

Oh I agree with GGC, but I look to what a squad like Totty did, with the same personnel, and my concerns die down. I think most American fans feel like buying new players is the way to stay on top, simply because they gravitate to the typical "cliche" teams (RM, MU, MC (to a lesser degree), Barca, PSG, etc). All of those teams spend a crap-ton, just to spend. I applaud the offseason that the Gunners have had. I honestly think you guys won the transfer window, hands down. I think their defense is still their biggest Achilles heal though; however, they are going to be dangerous up top, which might balance the load the back line has to bear. I can applaud teams like the Gunners who spend to compete for a top 4, rather than teams who spend just to spend. I would've loved a backup LB and a backup striker, but with the likes of Origi, Brewster, and Laroucci I feel that our options could already be on the team. I'm excited to see us succeed or crash and burn, either way, hurry up Friday!

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ #YNWA

I think we should sign Tierney from Celtic, not because we need him per se but so that nobody else in the EPL can have him. Plus he can play either side of a wing-back system so it would be good business just on its face.

I wouldn't be mad at that signing if it's for the right price.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ #YNWA

Maguire in place of Gomez; Rodri in place of Hendo and Pepe in for Mane (at least for the first couple of games while Mane recuperates from the CAF)

TAA hasn't been good in the pre-season and he struggled quite a bit at the tail end of last season, too

That said, I still think we make a marquee signing before the end of the transfer window but no clue who it will be...lot of departures, though

Gotta disagree with you there Kop (rare I know). I think Maguire was heavily overpriced, and I would take both Gomez AND Matip over him. Yeah he's great at playing from the back, but defensively he isn't nearly as good as the two previously mentioned (IMO). Hendo is getting a little long in the tooth, and I think Rodri will be good in the EPL; however, we have more than enough options in the midfield right now that I would start before him. Pepe, I totally agree he would've been a GREAT signing; however, I haven't seen many clips of his work rate to retrieve the ball, all I see is offensive highlights (granted that makes sense). Not to mention, I wouldn't pay that much for a backup, it just doesn't make sense, for him I think Arsenal was a better landing spot because he'd start. If we would've played a 4-2-3-1 then he might've worked out well, but I think we're a better when playing the 4-3-3. TAA has struggled for sure, but I'll look to his track record before casting judgement.

I hope we make a USEFUL signing, otherwise, I'm ready to go into the season with the squad we have. Up the Reds! We won it 6 times!

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ #YNWA

I think the Maguire signing is just a reflection of the new reality as far as the fee...

Quality CBs demand a premium everywhere at the moment, the usual tax involved when a regarded English player goes to the big 6, and clubs like Man Utd generally just have to pay another tax on transfers because everyone knows they have the money. Kind of a perfect storm to push up the cost.

Tierney apparently almost done finally. Also rumors that David Luiz will move to the red side of London for a mere 8M pounds. Not as flashy as Upemecano, but would be yet another good deal for Arsenal. Luiz isn't what he was years ago, but he's better than Mustafi. Think he fits the system pretty well too. Could do worse for a stop-gap.

VT Class of '12 (MSE), MVBone, Go Hokies!

My nightmare is a Sokratis injury that sees a Luiz-Mustafi pairing. I'd rather have almost anyone else, and bunch of CFC fans I know are incredulous that Arsenal would want Luiz. Thank goodness it looks like Tierney will get done.

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

Well hopefully by November both Luiz and Mustafi are backups to Papa and Holding. Also Tierney is magnitudes better defensively than any other LB we currently have. I think the combination of the two signings boosts the defense just enough that I can see us snagging that top 4 spot back this year. Offensively we're loaded to the gills. Really excited to watch this team, though I know it'll take some time to really get things gelled.

VT Class of '12 (MSE), MVBone, Go Hokies!

I just hope they warned Papa about VAR...he can't be drowning in yellows all season long.

If they actually get Luiz on single digit millions...wow. To me that's great business. They knew all along that Saliba is a year away and if you offset it with the Koscielny sale they basically got a stopgap CB for a few million pounds. Practically a swap. And the guy will be better than Mustafi.

A luiz Mustafi paring would be nuts. Youd have like 85 minutes of play that looks good and athletic and like 8 mistakes in those 5 minutes

Taylor, looking desperately throws it deep..HAS A MAN OPEN DANNY COALE WITH A CATCH ALL THE WAY DOWN TO THE FIVE!!!!....hes still open

Yeah I'm not buying luiz is a big improvement and I'm curious why all the sudden is it normal for chelsea and Arsenal who are supposedly big time rivals swapping players now?

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

Luiz is definitely a big improvement. I know he makes mistakes, but not as many as Mustafi. Plus his strength is playing out from the back, which I think people underestimate how many goals we gave up because our defenders played a bad pass and got caught out.

Started 36 league games for Chelsea last year, and for 8M and a 2 year deal, that's just good business.

And for all of the disdain I have for Chelsea in general, they haven't tried to dick us over too much in the transfer window like ManU have done for instance. Also players and their families get settled in London and don't want to leave (Giroud's wife was a big reason for that move).

Not to dump on mustafi but almost any CB is an improvement I think Luiz isnt awful but hes mistake prone and not getting any younger, personally arsenal shouldve gone for someone with more upside instead of bringing in both ceballos and pepe and spent bigger on a good quality CB to help give them something to build around. I look at the defense and simply wonder where the leadership is going to come from or if anything someone to try and give them a reliable player to help stabilize the shakiness.

It'll be interesting to see exactly what kind of drugs the Juve board has been on. The Dybala saga, if it's finally over, has been the true dumpster fire of the transfer window.

I think a bigger hitch in any potential deal has alot to deal with his agent issues and the suit over the image rights. That said they had two deals agreed in full and both fell through for different reasons, wouldnt be surprised if Sarri last second changed things along with United seemingly in for manzukic late which makes no sense either.

a sad one, i think his best days (by far) are ahead of him. finishing and delivery just hasn't developed yet like you'd want for a winger and i think his best position is more central because of it (like we alluded to further up), but his work rate is incredible and it never felt like he wasn't trying his best. Wenger had lots of faith in him at a young age and maybe it was a little too much too soon

I just think for 40M you gotta take it. Especially as he's no longer in the first 11 after Pepe (Auba to the left I'd assume).

This recoups almost all of our alleged "budget" this summer (newsflash everyone, nobody knows how much money these teams can spend - Arsene's warchest days anyone?) Just hope Martinelli and Nelson are ready to rotate in this season.

VT Class of '12 (MSE), MVBone, Go Hokies!

yeah, 40m is good business. Very clear to me that Gunners have been selling better under Sanllehi and VV than under Gazidis (minus the Ramsey fiasco). getting 10m pounds for Bielik was excellent business too for a player who we clearly didn't rate at a position of need.

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

Guessing that they're still working on moving some of the remaining guys that Emery clearly doesn't rate (like Mustafi and Elneny, for example) to clubs outside of England. Plenty of opportunity to further clean up the wage structure.

This window was a smashing success, but with the Iwobi sale we really need Nelson or Saka to beat out Mkhi and succeed on the left. Just not sure what Mkhi has left. Or yeah, they play Aubameyang wide.

I heard they are planning to use that money to go back in for Upamecano in January. If that's true, wish this had happened sooner so they could have gotten it done now, but Luiz should help to get through the first half.

Will miss Iwobi - I think he could be really good as a 10 like he plays with Nigeria. Hope he does well at Everton. But as you said, can't turn down 35-40 mil for him with Nelson/Martinelli looking in good form.

What a start...

not shocked at all, we had I believe 2 infractions regarding this whereas chelsea had something like 20 if I remember correctly. This has nothing to do with big money spending and everything to do with youth academy prospects and infractions (Bosarrettes was the player in question)

Liverpool and everton have been hit for the same thing in the past few years and have received similar fines, the only reason chelsea and barca got pummelled was due to the extent of it

Both of them playing in Italy within 2 years. Yikes.

I would say United for sure. Mkhi at least had a good run of form for half a season or so. Alexis was terrible the whole time. And he was becoming a problem in the locker room at Arsenal. Certainly disappointing for both sides, but Arsenal was just happy to get Alexis off the books

Yeah it's not even a question. Mkhi was overpaid but still on less than half what Alexis got out of Utd. That's insanity.

You say that like Serie A isn't a top 4 league in the world on the same caliber as the other 3. I really hate how much Premier League fans disrespect other leagues that they generally don't even watch.

That's like saying all P5 conferences are equal. Serie A is Juventus and everyone else these days.

I wouldnt say it's a knock on the league but Alexis is only at Inter because he has gone off a cliff form wise and UTD are paying most of his wages still. Mhiki is at roma which considering he was at united not long ago is a step down from what we thought he could be

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

So he moved from one Europa League team to another. Doesn't seem that odd.

That's like saying all P5 conferences are equal

And if someone transferred from the SEC to the ACC would it be fair to act like it's a huge step down just because one might be better than the other right now? The "best league in the world" has changed multiple times over the past two decades and it will change again.

Serie A is Juventus and everyone else these days

That's not quite true. For example, Napoli played Liverpool even in the CL group stage last year, winning and losing 1-0. Liverpool only advanced past Napoli on a tiebreaker (and courtesy of a crazy point blank save). Yes, the same Liverpool that won the CL, was matched completely evenly by Napoli. Obviously Roma had the crazy CL run the year before too.

I'm not saying Serie A is the best league in the world at this point in time, but it deserves respect and shouldn't be treated like a step down.

Juve have won eight titles in a row and the majority of those seasons they were miles out in front of everyone else, regardless of that one time Napoli almost advanced out of a group stage ahead of Liverpool but then didn't actually.

If Serie A isn't the best league in the world, how on earth can you not treat it like a step down if you have to leave the best league in the world to go there? It's not China or Turkey, but it's also clearly not England.

With regards to Alexis and Mkhitaryan, the Italian clubs pounced on availability of out-of-form (or perhaps washed) players with big names and big wages whose output and performance didn't justify it in hopes that they can recapture some value from that talent -- talent that was never going to move to those clubs without them having fallen out of favor in England first. World class players move to elite clubs and Serie A only has one. Lukaku might be the biggest name to move into Serie A to a non-Juve club since Higauin moved to Napoli in 2013?

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

it's also clearly not England

Man the superiority that EPL fans treat their league with is so annoying. This is exactly why many fans of non-EPL teams hate English football.

I'm guessing you also called the Premier League the "best league in the world" from 2012-2017 too? Because they only had 2 total UCL semifinal appearances in that span and were inferior to La Liga at a minimum. So when a La Liga player moved to the Premier League in that time frame, did you call that a "step down" too?

Do you even watch other leagues? There is a reason why the top 4 leagues are considered like that - they are all pretty damn close. Again, the 2nd place Serie A team showed that they could go toe to toe with the 2nd place EPL team last year head to head. Sure the EPL has more money and more high profile signings, but other leagues have their own strengths, like better tactics for example.

So is Arsenal to Roma a big step down? Not really, they are both Europa League clubs. One club plays its next domestic match vs Watford and one plays vs Sassuolo. Big difference.

Get out of here with this weak nonsense trying to fabricate an argument I'm not having. Idk what to tell you if your head is so far in the sand that you think that Serie A isn't "Juve and everyone else". Serie A and Bundesliga are about the same quality right now, and that's closer to Ligue 1 than it is to EPL/La Liga.

It boggles my mind how anyone could argue that "best league in the world" changes every few years and then bring up 2013 as some sort of bizarre counter argument for a point made about two player moves in Summer 2019. It's 2019. It's not 2012-2017. Nobody brought up 2012-2017 except you.

Thankfully, UEFA even has metrics to compare various leagues and various clubs across associations. According to the UEFA Country Coefficients, the last time Italy had a higher coefficient than England was 2014-15, and the last time before that was 2005-06. England has the highest in Europe since the start of the 2017-18 season, and you'll find 8 Italian clubs in Europe's top 100, but you'll find 12 English clubs (7 in the top-60). Even then, EPL had a higher 5 year trailing coefficient than Italy did. The league just isn't on the same level because it's been so top-heavy for the last decade-plus.

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

UEFA allocates 4 champions league spots directly to the group stage for all 4 of the top leagues and only those 4. Therefore, even though there are some discrepancies where one league might be a little better than another, UEFA themselves (who you cite for your references) are saying that the 4 leagues are on the same playing field. If UEFA deemed EPL to be significantly better than Serie A, they would get more spots. In fact, they used to give Serie A only 2 to the group stage plus one to the playoffs a couple years ago when the league was down. But they recently decided the league is on the same tier again so they are now in the same grouping as the others.

It's silly to look at UEFA coefficients because that only measures how they perform in UCL or UEL that season as far as I know. So in 14/15 Italy had a higher coefficient only because Juve made the UCL final. The league as a whole was definitely not better than EPL that year, so the coefficient can be misleading on a single year basis.

You're still failing to say why moving from Arsenal to Roma is a step down. Again, both are Europa League clubs in top 4 leagues. Consider this hypothetical - moving from Watford to PSG or even Lille/Lyon would be considered a step up, even if EPL is stronger than Ligue 1. You can't just view things as binary as "I think EPL is better, so any other moves are a step down." That's silly imo.

Discussions like these are why the best clubs banter about a European super league, and with all due respect Italy could send four clubs and I don't think Roma, Lazio, and Fiorentina would make it.

If Roma are on the same level as United and Arsenal, why are they happy taking their retread castoff players on loan for a year and paying for the privilege to do so?

If Serie A is on the same level as the EPL, why don't teams outside of Juve play as well in those competitions (as indicated by Coefficient)?

If Serie A is on the same level as the EPL, why does the talent flow in Italy stop at Juventus or abroad? E.g. Why did Salah leave Roma for Liverpool if they were just another Europa club?

If Serie A is on the same level as the EPL, why don't class players choose to play there outside of Juve?

You can't just view things as binary as "I think EPL is better, so any other moves are a step down."

Great, we agree -- I never said that. I never said that all moves from England to Italy are a step down. Obviously PSG is better than Watford -- Serie A is probably closer to Ligue 1 in power structure and dynamics than it is to EPL. Ligue 1 probably even has more domestic talent since France is way way up and Italy is... not.

Going back to the P5 football analogy, you're arguing that moving from LSU to Pitt (they were in the ACCCG last year!) isn't a step down, while somehow assuming that my position is that moving from Ole Miss to Clemson can't be a step up.

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

The answer to pretty much every single one of your questions is: money.

You're rebuttal is probably something like: "more money = better teams." Well, not entirely. Even the 20th place team in England this year will probably make more than even Europa League level Serie A teams. But Norwich City clearly isn't better than Roma or Milan.

It's still hilarious that Roma, despite having no money and UEFA unfairly targeting them with FFP, made a Champions League semifinal run recently. Something that even Arsenal and Man U haven't done lately. But I guess because we're outside of England it doesn't matter. It's also funny that Serie A clubs are almost all broke and yet can still compete with EPL clubs head to head.

But back to the point, is EPL better than Serie A right now? Again, sure by a little. But Serie A has closed the gap lately and it's ignorant of you to think otherwise. I don't care what the UEFA coefficients say in 14/15 vs 18/19, the gap between Serie A and EPL is drastically less now than it was then. Again, that's a flawed system. The league was down five years ago but since then, clubs like Napoli and Inter have drastically improved. I've watched Serie A regularly over the last 6 years or so and the league has gotten noticeably better every year. Man City to Roma is a significant step down. Arsenal or Man U to Roma, not so much. Btw since you like those coefficients so much, Roma has a higher UEFA coefficient than Man U for 18/19 that was used in this year's Europa League seeding. So for example, you can label Smalling's move a "step down," but it doesn't seem to be, even by your own metrics.

The best players in their prime play elsewhere because those teams can afford to pay them. Then when they're washed or haven't been in form for two years, they evidently go to Italy 🤷🏻‍♂️ if the Italian league is comprised primarily of italian nationals, up-and-coming talent (that will wind up at a club abroad or at Juve), and past-their-prime veterans who can't hang at the highest levels any more, how can you argue it's the same level? The best talent in the global soccer doesn't play in Italy and it consistently finds its way to English clubs or other elite continental clubs. Sure the gap is smaller now than it was years ago, but there's still a gap - and by your own admission! Three posts ago it was "you should respect the Italian league and they call it a Big Four for a reason!!!" - so it's a start. The gap isn't nearly as close as you seem to think it is. EPL/La Liga are a mile ahead of Serie A/Bundesliga now

With regards to coefficients, yes you can have one year that shows better success. But the coefficients are best used as a five year trailing sum (which is also how they're presented by uefa), and that shows that Manchester United are still 10th and Roma are 15th in regards to continental performance. Maybe the one year coefficent you cite is roughly United's floor and roughly Roma's ceiling roughly coinciding. Just a thought. The overall club coefficient gap between United and Roma is about the same as Roma and Zenit, and I certainly wouldn't be arguing that Roma to Zenit is a lateral move.

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

Do you even watch Serie A? You have fully bought into the entire EPL propaganda that Serie A is a bunch of old farmers. The league is superior on tactics and typically technically skilled players thrive more in Serie A, whereas athletic ones thrive more in EPL. If Serie A was so trash, why did Salah double his goal output when he moved to Liverpool? Ronaldo saw a decrease in goal output moving to Italy too. Maybe it's not so easy afterall. On the other hand, some players like Kolarov see improvements going to Italy. It's just different styles that suit different types of players, something that many English fans are unable of understanding.

Btw the gap between La Liga and EPL is almost as big as the gap between EPL and Bundesliga/Serie A based on the 5 year coefficients. So stop putting EPL in the same conversation as La Liga if you can't put Bundesliga/Serie A in the conversation either.

Clearly we're not going to change our minds, so this is a stupid back and forth. I am open minded enough to watch both leagues and understand their respective strengths. I'm not sure you are.

lol bro i get it, it's a stupid back and forth because you're a Roma/Serie A fan and took offense to a comment (where none was intended) and then came in hot with nothing aside from an argument to the extent of "serie a passes my eye test, roma made a UCL semi, and you're closed minded". Nobody said Serie A is trash. Nobody said it's a bunch of old farmers. Nobody said Italian tactics are bad. If you think the best talent in the world plays in Serie A and that it's on par with the EPL, you're blinded by your fandom. Since you cited Salah at Roma, let's analyze!

Roma in 15-16: Emerson, Rudiger, Digne, Salah (all now in EPL, Salah was also not wanted by his EPL club as another entry in a long line of Chelsea evaluation misses -- see KDB, Lukaku, etc), Dzeko and Gervinho (not wanted by EPL clubs), Maicon and Keita (downslope of careers), Pjanic (now at Juve), Szczesny (not wanted by EPL club and now at Juve), and a bunch of italian players. The only contributors who don't fit into those categories are Nainggolan and Manolas -- and neither play at Roma anymore!

Roma in 2019/20: who doesn't fit into those categories? There are only 5 players on the roster between ages 25-30 who aren't Italian -- Jordan Veretout (never capped for France), Juan Jesus (last capped for Brazil in 2013), Javier Pastore (not wanted by PSG), Henrikh Mkhitaryan (not wanted by Arsenal), and Chris Smalling (not wanted by Manchester united).

It's the same story up and down all of Serie A -- world class international players in their prime just generally tend to leave Italy or not go there in the first place. There are a handful of exceptions obviously, but outside of Juve (and to a lesser extent Napoli and Inter), rosters are mostly unproven foreign talent, old foreign talent, and Italian players. If you think that's calling your league trash and a bunch of old farmers, idk what to tell you and I'm not being the intransigent one here. If it's not "Juve and everyone else", how come nobody else ever wins and Juve are only ever rarely threatened?

FYI, the 5-year country coefficient gap between Spain and England right now is 9.4 but the 5 year country coefficient gap between England and Italy is 16.5 -- identical to the gap between Italy and Portugal.

Shouldn't have used Italy specifically, I guess. It was just a statement of surprise that a trade that was pretty big news at the time ended up with both players out of both teams and out of the league entirely in a relatively short amount of time.
