UNC without Top DBs

Looks like UNC is without another DB going into the season - I believe that is #4 they are missing...Will be curious to see how this impacts the game.

How does this effect our pass rush?

We put the K in Kwality

Our offense will be on the field longer and our defense won't have to rush the passer as much.

So we'll finally fair catch a kickoff at the 2 and get it on the 25. Nice!

If they don't have DBs then wont Jeabe or Hazeltin house every catch? I would think our offense will be off the feild in one, maybe two plays max!

I'm on day 10 of 30 days of no booze. No particular reason, and piss poor scheduling on my part. Your ABC comment got me thinking about what bottle of bourbon I'm going to buy on 11/5. Probably Weller 12 Year if I can find it. If not probably Blantons.

Good for you!

I did a similar fast last year.

The best part was how cheap a date I became when I started drinking again.

A lot to be said for a low tolerance on a tight budget.

All (sort of) kidding aside, mixing no alcohol in with a low carb and intermittent fast plan was a great way to melt off some weight.

Thanks!

Funny you mention it, I'm doing that exact thing. Unfortunately, I'm finding it somewhat difficult to manage the willpower required to stay focused on all of that at once lol. So my nutritional discipline is not quite what it usually is due to the focus on no drinking. Is what it is I guess.

Your hunger pangs are triggered by the hormone ghrelin.

This hormone is trainable by your eating schedule.

For instance, you eat at 8, 12 and 6, your ghrelin will spike at those times, causing you to feel hungry.

If you can power through for 30 minute or so, you should generally see a decrease in the hunger pangs.

A way to ease into an intermittent fast schedule is to skip breakfast and have bulletproof coffee instead. It's not a fast (you are ingesting fats) but it does get you used to not eating solid food in the morning. If you are doing any type of workout, the caffeine will help with energy, and also as a multiplier in your metabolic burn.

If you do a long term fast, by day 3 you should experience almost no hunger pangs. Ghrelin production drops in most people very quickly.

General rule of thumb at that point is that when your body does give you hunger pangs again, it's time to start eating again. A lot of people can go well over a week on a fast.

Lots of water and a vitamin supplement are important to take though.

For your stomach's sake, it's a good idea to break a long fast with something like a good bone broth.

Just remember that ANY calorie intake will break that fast. Be honest with yourself when doing any kind of fast, or you'll never stick with it.

Thank you. Good info and advice. I doubt I could ever fast more than 16 hours. But sounds like a good way to work on will power.

*looks around nervously for traditionally trained RDs, sees none*

Timing it around work may help provided you're not forced to watch everyone else eat. Definitely helps if you're already low carb or better. Don't skimp on the salt/electrolytes.

Dude, during football season?? Props to you my man on that discipline. It would be super hard for me.

Oh it sucks. Lol. But it's getting slightly easier each day. But I'm not gonna lie, I'm really looking forward to day 31.

I dont think VA abc carries Weller, and Blantons, atleast by me isnt even in stock, hence why I know it is delivered on Tuesdays so I know when to pick it up.

Thanks for the heads up.

Who says you have to wait to buy or that you can only have one?! Buy a different bottle once a week between now and then and you can have a buffet!

I was never a Brian Kelly guy at all. I thought he was a yelling abusive jerk that pulled QBs after an incompletion and didn't have the resume to back that behavior up. Well at ND he has learned to fire under-performing assistants quickly and has the budget and luxury to do so, I credit him for that. He has built a damn good program at ND and they are humming along. They will put 42 points up on our defense, so the question for me is can Cornelson and co. put up 43, on the road against a top 10 team. Hmmm.

can we worry about the UNC game first instead of looking ahead to the one after it that's next month?

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

Ummm, ND is the game after UNC, and the poster said "if they lose the next 2".. that's why I brought up ND

I remember when I was laughed at for calling Brian Kelly a top 10 coach... I hold to that point and think he runs a succesful ship. He knows how to use his resources and build a winning team. Got to not give up the big play against UNC and stop the run game. If the run game gets going for them, Howell will pick us apart. He's a very solid QB, hopefully Bud can come up with some wrinkles to confuse the true freshman.

UNC peops feel very confident about this game. They think the crowd isn't going to show up and there will be no home field advantage. Consider this your challenge.

Agree with this. The crowd will be there though- it's homecoming, so the crowd will be fine- hopefully we are in the game early and the crowd stays into it. If they are balanced on offense, we are going to struggle.

The crowd will be "fine"... until the mass exodus from the NEZ of students there only to watch the Homecoming Court.

Who the hell goes to these things to see the Homecoming court? I'm sorry, are they holding this game in 1958?

All the sororities and frats and alot of the service organizations. Basically anyone who sponsors someone for election.

I was in a fraternity, we had someone on the homecoming court at least one year I was there, and I can guarantee that none of us went to the homecoming game to find out if he won.

Either you're much older than me, or you just happened to be in one of the organizations that didn't vacate the premises immediately.

Even back when the 10-win streak was active, the homecoming game always had the weakest showing from the NEZ all season. About half of the students sitting there showed up in their organization's colors, yelled louder when their court representative was announced at halftime than during any part of the game, and left as soon as the halftime festivities ended. It is doubly frustrating whenever homecoming is one of the Effect games, because the NEZ is just a patchwork of colors.

Yelled?

Painful shrieking is about the best way to describe the god awful noise emitted from the sororities when their candidate is announced.

Was about to ask what this even meant, decided to take a chance looking it up, found out that:

- it's a reference to an obscure low-budget film from 2006
- that's not even the phrasing of the quote

Combined with the fact that it's a bit too vulgar for my tastes, and, well...

I can tell you that phrase was around well before 2006 because I first heard it in 2002. A crass way of saying don't use a word with a negative connotation to describe the organization you belong too but works well to get the point across to 18 year old men.

I never understood this take. I was in a fraternity (which also had a HC candidate) and no one cared, let alone left at halftime after the announcement. I had buddies in a bunch of the other fraternities which were the same way. We typically booked our group seats with a sorority, and none of them left after either. Really, in 4+ years of greek life, with a social network of basically all greek affiliated kids, I literally never once knew of anyone going just for the announcement of King and Queen.

Maybe the thought process stems from Homecoming games typically being mid-day kickoffs against shitty opponents. Noon kickoffs against Ohio, Southern Miss, or William and Mary (back when we were good) gets kids to leave, not because some orientation leader from German Club won HC King again.

this conversation is basically an annual thing around here. seems like those involved in greek life swear that nobody ever left, and everyone else swears they remember the hive emptying out of the NEZ after half time of homecoming game

source: we had a similar discussion last year

The search bar at the top of the page is your friend. I just searched for "homecoming exodus" and "homecoming nez" (not including quotes) and came up with all those threads, mostly saying the same stuff.

I guess that's more my point - it comes up all the time, and seems massively unfounded.

"Massively unfounded"... I would respond, but there's nothing left to say that hasn't been said numerous times in the links I posted above.

And to everyone else who has witnessed it with their own eyes, it seems massively founded. We'll just agree to disagree I guess

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

So from the East or West stands, (the royal) you can pinpoint the students leaving the North endzone specifically for 1 game each year, are greek affiliated? That's pretty impressive.

I mean the sororities literally wear bright neon shirts and sit in groups in the NEZ. It's not hard to notice when all the sudden those bright neon shirts aren't there in the second half.

Gobble Till You Wobble

Exactly. And they're particularly noticeable since Homecoming is (almost) always one of the Effect games, so the crowd is otherwise all-maroon or all-orange, and then you have patches of blue or green or yellow or whateverthefuck scattered throughout the NEZ. I particularly remember one year when we were playing Duke with Maroon Effect, and two different organizations were both wearing a blue that almost exactly matched Duke. Like, seriously, have some situational awareness.

I'm speaking as a guy who likes to make last stands on some hills around here, I can't understand anyone not seeing this happen. I've only been to 2 homecoming games at watched it happen at both. A great way to notice it isn't even in NEZ it's SEZ. There are actually students sitting up there for the first half and halftime and they yell and scream during homecoming court and poof gone for 3rd quarter.

Wet stuff on the red stuff.

Okay, I will caveat my comments with the clarification that I may be speaking about another era because I got to Blacksburg the same year Michael Vick did (my fraternity got kicked out after I graduated and our off campus house is now a church, which, fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck, do they know what happened in that building) and we were always up in the nosebleeds in the East Stands. And I will helpfully add a "Kids these days" and disavow any of the behavior of you young whippersnappers, because BACK IN MY DAY, ow, my hip.

And then we're gonna sweep, sweep, sweep, sweep and we're not gonna stop jet sweeping til we get stopped exactly 1-yard short of that goalline whereupon we'll have to lean on a young but inexperienced QB to complete a low percentage fade pass to a receiver who is beginning to look like the second coming of Marcus Davis. Edit: I don't have insider info

Heard Grimsley, Tisdale, Crawford, and Darrisaw. Also said there could be others.

If Tisdale can't go this weekend it will be a big opportunity for Dax to have a statement performance.

Grimsley hasn't been playing the past few weeks aside from catching punts. Not a dramatic loss
Any of the other three miss the game would be a major problem.

Sounds like we could be dealing with some key injuries ourselves... Per Matej Sis and Doug Bowman on the Inside the Tunnel podcast. (Note: they did qualify this information as unconfirmed rumor/grape-vine)
Out: LT-C. Darrisaw, LG-L. Smith, RB-K. King, and OLB-A. Tisdale.
Probable: WR T. Turner, DT-D. Crawford.

I hope this info is wrong as losing Darrisaw and Tisdale would be huge blows. Does Tahj Gary backup McClease? Who steps in at LT? Does Artis blow his redshirt if Dax is at OLB?

This OL could be a trouble point on Saturday with depth stretched thin along with UNC Aaron Crawford looking to party in the VT backfield. 😬

Go Hokies!

Need to take advantage of their corners being gone but also need to stay on the field and have long drives that eat up the clock. I'm hoping Gary is a go and McClease keeps building on the recent success he's been having. No turnovers and win the time of possession and we will win the game.

Our defense will get crushed by any team that has average or better OLine play. UNC's qb looks pretty good, unless Bud can figure out how to generate a pass rush and contain with 4, I think they march up and down the field on us.

App State had a nice gameplan. Probably should go with something like that. They loaded up to stop the run, got QB pressure and Howell made some mistakes.

Gonna have to hope that Bud has a secret weapon cooked up that no one has seen to exact revenge for the 98 Gator Bowl. (For those who don't remember... UNC coach Brown was running it up for the fuck of it.)

Honestly though, with the Hokie defense as it is, and UNC having two of the best RBs in the ACC, the Hokie offense is going to have to score at least 36 pts, because UNC is probably going to score at least 35.

I don't see a win without the Hokies turning the Heels over a few times for a short field. The offense just doesn't have 5-6 TD scoring drives of over 50 yards in them.

You'll probably see a few corner blitzes mixed in to keep the pressure up on passing downs. I definitely agree that the offensive game plan should be to possess the football and take your shots down field. Hazelton and Turner should be able to get open.

It's Time to go to Work

"I definitely agree that the offensive game plan should be to possess the football and take your shots down field."

Yes but if UNC knows that and prepares for it, then the counter should be to move quickly and work underneath, unless UNC knows that VT knows that and prepares for underneath stuff, then the goal should be to go downfi...ah hell, it's just going to be bubble screens and jet sweeps.
