Grant Wells named starter at QB for 2022 opener

Wells, the transfer from Marshall, beat out Jason Brown, who transferred in from South Carolina for the spot. Also mentioned in the tweet, presumed starter at RB, Malachi Thomas is week to week with an injury right now. Hopefully he will be good to go for the opener.

As expected

Also the Twitter embed from mobile has been for a little bit now. Same goes for YouTube which you can't embed from the app.

Outside it's night time, but inside it's LeDay

It's not even the app anymore, Twitter is blocking the ability to embed from the browser on mobile. Which is super swell

Malachi Thomas's status isn't giving me the warm fuzzies. First he has an "academic commitment", then "unavailable", then a no show to fan day, and now an injury that is "week-to-week". We have seen this show before and I don't like how it ends.

I would really like Thomas to be healthy, hopefully King is ready to go cause I really think those two are the guys. I know Pry said nice things about Holston but I just don't see it with him, maybe spread power run is a better game for him, but who knows.

It does really suck, but at least Jalen Holston should be a good substitute. Between Holston and King I think opponents will still have to respect our run game.

Yeah Thomas showed some really good flashes at the end of last year. I think Holston can fill that in though I don't think he ever really got a fair shake back there...I'll continue to be a big 0 fan until he gives me a reason not to be hopefully he breaks out this year if Thomas isn't available.

Kings gonna be King guy has elite acceleration and is always a threat to break one.

(add if applicable) /s

Big 0, is that our conference after all the realignment shakes out?

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

Without looking at any stats, to me Holston has always felt like the guy you could depend on for consistent production. Not going to break out and have multiple big runs, but just a consistent take what the defense gives. Hopefully with a well coached offensive line, he can be a dependable 3.5 -4 ypc kind of back.

I agree with this take. It *feels* like the Reggie Bush/Lendale White scenario back in 2005 (could be off a year or so). Reggie (King) is the home run threat, Lendale (Holston) is the consistent yardage guy.

Let's go! Excited to watch Wells develop for us with three years of eligibility. I also feel good about Brown if called upon and think our whole QB room was upgraded significantly with those two.

Hope Wright heals up and comes back stronger and ready to go again next year. I think he has a bright future and may have had some time in the rotation even this season.

Really hope Malachi heals up and is good to go with minimal time lost. Good thing it doesn't sound overly serious or season threatening.

Also really hope Lawson is ok/isn't injured seriously. He likely won't start day one this season but I have a feeling he is primed for a breakout. He has been extremely impressive in what we have seen of him at linebacker.

After re-reading your review and reflecting on the spring game again, definitely could see this coming. As you mention, the comparisons to McSorely are there and I have been thinking that might be what Bowen and Pry saw in him coming from Penn State. Wells likely has some of the best pure passing ability that we have had in quite some time. Willis had a great arm but didn't see the field nearly as well as Wells in the tape and wasn't as comfortable in the short/intermediate game.

Just watched the video from Pry's presser this evening. Obviously named Wells starter, said he also feels good about Brown but Wells has been "exceptional."

Overall said camp has been very grueling and difficult but it's the type of camp they have needed in order to have the season they want to have.

Really seems very pleased with the offense overall. Mentions they have made a lot of explosive plays and moved the football well. Mentioned Daequan Wright as a matchup problem, also said Blumrick and King should factor heavily into their plans. Said King was their "most explosive player."

Seems to be getting really comfortable with what he's seeing from his linebackers. Mentioned that Keller and Lawson have been great (also just said Lawson was unavailable but didn't seem overly concerned about missing a ton of time in the tone of his comments). Also mentioned McCray and Nelson at DE and said they feel comfortable there.

Reading between the lines, likely depth concerns at OL and in the secondary right now that they hope to sort out over the next two weeks.

I really just hope we have an offensive staff that knows what they're doing.

100% agreed. We know Pry will have the defense, the track record is there. On offense, we have Randolph as a very proven guy while the others are less so. Main wild card is Bowen. Meyer picking him is a good vote of confidence, and Pry said he was his first choice.

Bowen is a protege of Joe Moorhead and was his OL coach at Fordham and eventually the OC there prior to coming to Penn St Also getting hired by Urban for an NFL job is a great vote of confidence. Pry said he and Franklin really viewed him as a rising star.

I think Brad Glenn is a huge help there too. Bowen has a handful of games of calling plays, so he's not brand new to it, but having a guy like Glenn is big to me to help plan and even mentor on game day

Yeah I really like the dynamic of Bowen, Glenn, and Rudolph and the offensive synergies there. Glenn mentioned today at the presser that he envisioned he would be on the field instead of the box. Having the QB coach on the field right in the QBs ear to talk to them with the OC in the booth I think is a huge advantage and good setup.

Yeah, Rudolph has a ton of play calling exp too.

cosigned. It's 2022. We can't keep thinking about offense third

Until I see Tisdale walk out there instead, I'm convinced Keller is going to start at LB over him at ODU. Way too much smoke blown about him at this point for it to just be lip service.

Wright was such a steal of a recruit for the last staff, I bet he turns some heads this fall.

See I'm thinking this about Dax. Maybe Tisdale will move over to Mike (as Pry alluded to) because Dax is too slow.

Either way I'm very curious about this defense because it sounds like they're still behind the offense, but it's really hard to believe they'll be outside the top 50 this year

Agree on Dax, but I think because of how the coaches view him leadership wise, they at least give him a few games to prove he's a liability before reducing his snaps at all. Tisdale at Mike is interesting as a one year stop gap if he can play it, because I expect one of the Wills or Sam's to ultimately play there next year

I can't see a world where Tisdale plays mike at 215-220. Unless Pry is just serious about speed and giving up the run

Situationally he may slide guys around for coverage. 3rd and long, teams that run 4 and 5 wide. He may want that depth for coverage purposes.

If you believe the Hokiesports roster, Tisdale is heavier than Keller.

Five star get after it 100 percent Juice Key-Playing. MAN

I've always thought the roster fudged ~1" and ~8lbs but that's just me

I have a hunch that Tisdale will start just from the game experience standpoint. I think Keller will end up seeing the field more and more as the season goes on.

I do think Dax will be better inside. He is a P5 sized MLB and is the leader. If he can get everyone lined up and make the calls for Marve/Pry, I am good with it.

Nice to hear a Hokie coach say "Our analysts and grad assistants are looking at not just our 1st opponent but the first 1/4 of the season".

I told him I’d crawl on my hands and knees to be the DL coach at Virginia Tech. Now, all of a sudden, I’m sitting in this chair and I told him I’d still crawl on my hands and knees to work here. I just want to be here.
JC Price

I noticed on Hokiesports that DT Lemar Law is 6'5" 320lbs, that is Dexter Lawrence size right there and I want to know how Lakeem Rudolph is developing at DE. Those are 2 players from Green Run in Va Beach and that school has put out some talent in recent years. We missed out on a WR or CB from there that was a 4 star and chose UNC but I have high hopes for Law and Rudolph.

I just want to say what great news this is because it will allow announcers to have some great quotes, like when Grant throws his 7th TD against Liberty:
"They went to the Well 7 times and got 7 TDs!"

Or when we're in the championship game, down by 4 and UGA makes a miracle interception in the endzone with no time left: "they went to the Wells to many times"

I hate that in your fantasy scenario we still sont win the natty

You see when you tell a story you need to ground it in reality some way so that people buy in to it.

If you had left out the "down by 4" part, we could have assumed that Tech was trying to expand its lead....oh well.

For the Brad Glenn and Grant Wells Press Conferences:

Some quick thoughts:

  • The statement about Wells's accuracy from Glenn is eye-opening. Glenn harped about accuracy quite a bit in previous press conferences about his offensive philosophy, especially short accuracy . I'll be ecstatic if the short passes to King/Thomas in space and intermediate passes to the TEs at the sticks are consistently accurate.
  • Glenn on the sidelines focusing on QBs seems significant. Was separation of QB coach and OC intentional on Pry's part to improve in-game QB coaching?
  • Wells mentioned the focus on decision making and always looking for a positive play. So, at least it's something that they're actively working on and hopefully he does cut back on those interceptions.
  • With a prior movie actor doppelganger Michael Brewer (in the form of Zac Effron), VT is continuing the tradition with Wells being a doppelganger of Will Poulter (I'm not the only one that sees this, am I?)

I think you might have prosopagnosia.

stick it in, stick it in, stick it in!

From Google:
Prosopagnosia, also known as face blindness, means you cannot recognize people's faces.

Thank you for the new vocabulary word.

It's definitely a word I use regularly and not one I saw when I googled face blindness to see if it's one or two words.

stick it in, stick it in, stick it in!

hmmm, interesting. I can only remember faces and not names. The chin, eyes, and cheek bone structure look super similar to me. But I guess maybe I'm alone in that assessment.

Listening to Brad Glenn speak, if you close your eyes, all I hear is Ted Lasso

But with much better dialogue

Coach Glenn gets me stoked.
I think Im happy he's a Hokie.

I'm really looking forward to him playing QB for us for 3 years and think he could be really special. He strikes me as a gunslinger type, which is something VT hasn't had in forever.

He threw for over 3500 yards last season. The last VT QB to do that? Jerod Evans--and he was throwing to Isaiah Ford, Cam Phillips, and Bucky Hodges. I doubt Grant Wells had receivers that good at Marshall last year, and yet he still managed to be more accurate than Jerod. If we can put some serious WR and TE weapons around him and get him coached up well, we will be set for the next three years.

I really can't help but be optimistic about this season. I don't know if it's the Fuente vs Pry transparency difference, Pry just being a really good salesman, or if it's a combination of all of that and more. I started in the "6 wins is a miracle" camp and now I'm kind of leaning towards "8 wins are totally possible".

Just me?

Warning- Filter lost.

"Look at this... This is just spectacular.... These people are losing their minds"

I mean, anything is possible, right? I am not expecting much. I would be equally (moderately) surprised if our team goes 2-10 or 10-2. Our schedule doesn't have any teams that really scare me. But we're also not going to scare anyone on our schedule (which considering ODU, Wofford, and Liberty are all teams on our schedule, says something). 6 wins might be a miracle. 8 wins is also possible. At this point, we just don't know.

Onward and upward

I agree that we really have no idea at this point if we'll be good, bad or mediocre.

But I don't think 6 wins would be a miracle at all. And I'd be SHOCKED if we went either 2-10 or 10-2 (I think there's less than a 1% chance of either of those).

As awful as it felt as fans, we were never truly terrible for any single season under Fuente - I mean, not like bottom of the conference bad. I think we've upgraded at QB, and the rest of the team seems roughly the same, talent wise. I think our bell curve has a strong peak between 5 and 7 wins.

The doll's trying to kill me and the toaster's been laughing at me.

If we have a small handful of injuries at key spots we might be looking at a 2 or 3 win campaign. Alternatively, if we have a couple guys break out and really excel this team has a path (read: very soft schedule) to 9 or 10 wins. Nothing would shock me. I think there's more than a 1% chance of either case but I agree the odds are relatively small. I think most likely is a fast start against lesser teams (ODU, BC, Wofford) and then a very disheartening middle of the season against our toughest competition and a 50/50 showing at the end of the season as the team struggles with injuries but also shows some progress with a tone-setting win against UVA to finish the season with 5 or 6 wins.

Onward and upward

I'm with you. We were *that close* to winning 3 more games last year. We had the opportunities to win the WVU, ND and Syracuse games until ... everything wrong ... happened and we couldn't close out in the end.

Just depends on how a lot of the question marks get answered -- RB, WR, O-line, etc. We are 2-3 breakout guys from an 8-9 win season and also 2-3 injuries away from like a 5 win season lol.

This is very true. And I realized that after I typed that up there. And after I listened to this week's media clips from practice. I totally forgot how thin we are at OT
