It's been 7 months since I posted about perspective on the football season. That was 1 month prior to two fantastic young ladies moved across country to their new home in Virginia. Now at 6 months of fostering, my wife and I have officially applied for adoptions.
There is so much uncertainty in VT sports and its tough but these girls have been through so much that not knowing what is going to happen to the ACC or can we field a basketball team, who will coach the women's team are minor worries. We thought Bonnie was the answer to WBB 20 years ago, then we thought it was Kenny. We might take a few steps back, but lots of schools have had cycles of good and bad coaches. We can get back to having a good team.
We're now out of a power conference even though we didn't join a power conference until 2000. We have been here before. This is familiar territory, and while it might be a set back, we have shown were one good play from 2nd place for wrestling, we have a string of NCAA tournament runs in MBB, we got a top 6 recruiting class in WBB with basically no resources. We're in a conference that was 1 basket away from having 50% of the elite 8.
Our football team was the only unranked team to win 7 games by 17 points or more. We return a lot of that team.
I think Sands has a lot of work ahead of him to guide VT into the future, what every that maybe. Whit has some tough decisions to make with hiring a new WBB coach, 20 time ACC CoY T&F coach, and what to do with Mike Young.
There will be changes, because that is the only constant. Yet my goal is to provide stability to the two girls that haven't known it even in the wake of change. So while it's kind of a dick move for Kenny to not say goodbye, it's not important to us fans, he gone, the fans are who stays, we are the stability, we are the support to the athletes and administration in what are always tumultuous times.

Hokies.
Nothing really to do about Mike Young. His buyout is prohibitive.
There are lots of things you can do without firing him, but we lost just about the entire team, something needs corrected, so start correcting until you can afford the restart.
That assumes its not all NIL related. Until I see something concrete otherwise, I am holding that this is primarily financial. If thats the case, there really isnt much Young and staff can do to counter it other than finding players that are willing to come in for minimal NIL
Whit can fund raise and get donors to donate in the right place.
Right now the right place is football. I dont like it as a basketball first guy but understand it from the business perspective and agree it needs to be the focus the next two to three years until the football landscape clears up.
Question for you - we have been in the fostering process for over a year and only had one two week respite for a potential long-term placement. We are working with a therapeutic foster care org that works in Virginia and I thought going with local counties was the only other option but you mentioned the girls are from across the country - curious the process/organization you are working through. Feel free to email if that's better fmccreer (at) vt (dot) edu. Thanks!
I've been waiting for you to chime in on this whole thing and keep us all grounded and you're absolutely right brother. I hope your girls are doing well and I hope your adoption goes through. I hope.
Good point about us fans being the stability. "Win or lose, we'll greet you with a glad returning..."
