Georgia Tech fires Basketball coach

In a move that surprised quite a few people in basketball circles, Georgia Tech has decided to part ways with Brian Gregory after five seasons. If you look at his body of work it's not that impressive but he was seen as a good fit in a program and school that stresses academics. The other surprise is the fact that GT improved their record by 9 wins over last season but many think that the Athletic Director looked at the seven departing seniors as a good time to have a new coach kick start the program that never had a winning record in the ACC under Gregory. Georgia Tech lost in the Quarterfinals of the NIT to finish 21-15.

Now we have two ACC openings to see filled. Going to be interesting to see who Pitt and GT bring in now.

Made even more interesting considering PJ...

PJ has one of the best contract's in college football. I don't think they can afford to get rid of him anytime soon. PJ cashes in an extension seemingly after every good season and they realize they can't afford to fire him after every bad one.

This is a move that they could end up regretting. They showed remarkable improvement this year and looked to me to be heading in the right direction.

In Sam Rogers we trust.

That is with a bunch of seniors. The AD sees the minimal improvement over his entire coaching span and probably figured they were likely to take a step back next season. To the AD it probably seemed like a better idea to get a new coach than extend the old one.

The big question is how much money do they have to pay a new coach? They still owe Hewitt close to 3 mil and now owe Gregory 1.4 mil. Big reason why people are surprised Gregory got fired this year

This is true, I think they're paying a combined $3M next year for Gregory and Hewitt NOT to coach basketball at GT. Whoever they get is going to have a back loaded contract.

Bobby Cremins was a good, not great, basketball coach. That was a long time ago. Since then, GT hasn't been so good at picking basketball coaches.

Georgia Tech could very well be another Boston College in the conference next season with the loss of 7 seniors and a new head coach.

Was Georgia Tech's head coach the one that looked like Marty McFly?
