Scott Shafer is stepping down as defensive coordinator of the Maryland football team for personal reasons, the school announced on Friday afternoon.
This is going to be a blow to spring practice and recruiting. On Twitter a beat writer said this leaves UMD with 4 full time coaches as of today.

I believe that next to LOLUVA being who it is, having a train wreck in MD football has the potential to do more to help recruiting than having any other program tank. Hopefully CJF can get a real pipeline going from all of the DC/Baltimore Metro area.
It may help us a bit, but I think it's a bigger boon to the rest of the Big Ten. They've already done well poaching recruits from Maryland and New Jersey with the ability to offer kids a chance to play in their home state every other year. Terrapin turmoil is probably only going to strengthen that effect.

The key to a good April Fool's prank is just a hint of plausibility. This one...not so much. So bad in fact that he immediately apologized.

On-field football at UVA? That's a change from past years.
April 23rd is also one of a Wahoo's traditional days of not caring to go to a football stadium to see their school play football. The date isn't all that well known, as people often confuse it for any of the days from Jan 1st to April 22nd, and April 24th to Dec 31st.
I wish there was a "why" to this story.
I'm sure it will come out soon. But this can't be good for UMD, not having a full staff for spring practice and recruiting and a coach leaving just after getting there.
