Virginia Tech to Face Florida in 2021 NCAA Tournament

Mike Young has guided the Hokies to the big dance in his second season at the helm.

[ACC Pool]

It's time to dance, again, Hokies.

The Hokies are a No. 10 seed and match up with the No. 7 Florida Gators on Friday March 19.

I don't know what a Hokie is, but God is one of them!

We put the K in Kwality

Let's Kill some gators!!!

Granted we take the Florida game, Ohio State is the two seed matchup I wanted. HOKIES!

Another white bronco? The first one didn't go too far.

I was hoping for Houston. That region looks prime for a Cinderella run.

Clemson got a 7. What a fucking joke.

We are seeded too low. Way too low.

But that's ok. They have all week to simmer about it and come out pissed off next week.

"I have a PLAN. You just need to have a little goddamn faith, Whit. I just need. more. MONEY." - Justin van der Linde

The late delays are why we are seeded so low. Out of condition and rhythm at the end when you really need it. That said, is there really a difference between the 7 and 10 seed? We are playing each other.

I wouldn't say way too low.

Best case scenario we would have been an 8. No chance we were getting on the 7 line (the fact that Clemson was put there is a mistake, and not indicative to me that we should be).
With that said, I think the 10 is preferable to an 8.

And in terms of 2 seeds you want to see, Houston is probably the "weakest", but I think Ohio St is next after that.

Georgetown-Colorado is the easiest 12-5 call in years.

God the seeding is all wacked out and completely fucked. GT got shafted while FSU as a 4?

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

GT was seeded low because they started the year losing to Georgia State and Mercer. That must have killed their NET rankings and resume in general

I'm not complaining about our seeding. We're ahead of schedule by like 2 years. It's an extremely successful season to be where we're at in Year 2. Plus, I like the match up with Florida. No complaints at all.

But objectively speaking with all emotion out of it, it makes little sense to me how Clemson is a 7 seed over UNC an 8, GT a 9, and us a 10 seed. All three teams are better than Clemson imo.

Who really got the shaft imo though is Michigan St. They are in the toughest conference in the country, closed the season very well with 3 wins over top 10 teams, and got put into the play in game while bubble teams like Syracuse got in safe.

Oh hell yeah we are way ahead of schedule.

And let's be honest for a sec. The only reason we are a 10 is because COVID put a pause on our season. We were playing at the level of a 5 or 6 seed so you have to think Florida and tOSU feel a little screwed over this.

But the fact is, we are already a really good program in Year 2 of CMY. And while we were good under Buzz, it's absolutely incredible we are already at this point.

"I have a PLAN. You just need to have a little goddamn faith, Whit. I just need. more. MONEY." - Justin van der Linde

Syracuse and VCU are in- no natter their resume. They are in automatically no matter what now. the committee cant stand Beoheim whinning about playing only quad 1 road teams for example.

Also Bama shoulda gotten the last 1 over Michigan. But that will probably be irrelevant by the elite 8.

Noles have to be the final 4 fave in their bracket. Colorado, young bama, then injured Mich.

I'll take the 10. Much rather play Florida and then Ohio St if we win than play in the 8/9 and then get Baylor. Given what this season was "supposed" to be, it's all gravy from here moving forward

Plus I really really dislike Florida and OSU.

And yeah Clemson at 7 is a freakin joke. I'm taking Rutgers in my bracket.

The ncaa always does something dumb and having GT as a 9 and Clemson a 7 is a joke. Also I know michigan state beat a bunch of the 1 seeds but I was surprised they made it still

I Fucking love it, I have no idea how Florida plays this year but I have no faith in Mike White to coach anywhere near Mike Young. I'm already thinking about the matchup Sunday.

Would love to hear what Kerry Blackshear would say.

Nice way of avoiding #1 seed in the 2nd round, I dig it. Sweet 16 bound!

I can imagine no more rewarding a career. And any man who may be asked in this century what he did to make his life worthwhile, I think can respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction:
โ€œI served in the United States Navy"

The Clemson seeding is more than laughable, it's an absolute disgrace. What a complete joke.

Is coronavirus over yet?

And they absolutely fucked Louisville in the ear hole. LOL. No KY or UL!

I hate UK and can't bring myself to care about UL

So, just did the Tourney challenge like always. Any one else notice if you pick straight Top25 win % the final is Gonzaga vs Virginia Tech? I like our seeding fur the first time ever.

"Tyrod did it Mikey! Tyrod did it!"

When was the last time the highest seeded ACC team was a 4?

90s at best, maybe 80s? Duke really carried the league since mid 90s

EDIT: 2013 was last time and ACC teams wasn't a #1 seed, but UofL was #1 that year. Duke was a 2. In 1996, and 2003 Wake was a 2 seed. 1990 Duke was a 3 seed, 1988 & 1989 Duke was a 2. UNC was a 2 in 1985. 1980 Maryland was a 2.

That is all of the time the ACC hasn't been a 1 seed since 1976 where I could not find seedings for the 76 bracket.

Was that when Duke was ousted by VCU? Cuz that busted so many of my coworkers' brackets but I picked it out of spite and rode that to an office pool win.

In 2007 Duke was a 6th seed and VCU beat them 79 to 77 in the first round.

Duke has been the dominant team in the ACC since the early 90s, but the there have been a lot of natty's from current/former ACC teams since 1990.

Duke - 1991 1992 2001 2010 2015
UNC - 1993 2005 2009 2017
Syracuse - 2003
Louisville- 2013
Maryland - 2002
UVA - 2019 (sigh)

If you took Duke out the ACC would still arguably be the best conference in college basketball the past 3 decades

The doll's trying to kill me and the toaster's been laughing at me.

ONLY time I ever put money on the tourney at work was 02 and I picked Maryland. And won. I have rested on my laurels.

(I remember being a big fan of Syracuse the following year, but I don't remember if I actually picked them to win)

-What we do is, if we need that extra push, you know what we do? -Put it up to fully dipped? -Fully dipped. Exactly. It's dork magic.

This is very exciting stuff

The ACC seedings were so confusing to me.

Regardless, I feel great about how we did this season in a bizarro year. We are ahead of schedule, so kudos to Mike Young.

According to 538 Clemson and UNC are the only two higher seeds favored to lose. So you're not the only one.

10 seed is fair. Keep in mind that we only beat 3 tournament teams this year.

I'm looking forward to the matchup. It would be a great boost for our program to get a tournament win. Go Hokies!

Lose 3 GT?

Just going off of what I saw at "Senior Day" with Bede, Diarra, and Pemsl.

I have no idea how many we actually lose, but with two coming in, and with 13 scholarships handed out, I don't know how much room we have.

Never Forget #1 Overall Seed UVA 54, #64 UMBC 74

All three could stay, and I don't believe their scholarships would count against the limit due to Covid. (Assuming we could afford the scholarships.)

I would love for them all to stay, but I can't see us conceivably using 3 Graduate Point Guards.

Diarra and Pemsl make way for Storm Murphy and Pedulla

I thought 3 GT meant the 3 grad transfers, i.e., Diarra, Pemsl, and Mutts.

Yeah, I think we'll lose at least 3...but not Mutts

Speaking of questionable seeding, how did WVU get a 3 and Okie St got a 4?

The Cowboys beat them twice and were 14 spots ahead of them in the NET

Okie State got the "you shouldn't be here but your case is still on appeal so we'll hold our noses" downseeding penalty.

Interestingly enough, WVU is the highest favored 3 seed on 538 and OKState is the least favored 4 seed.

Either makes me love the entire rest of the first round or have the worst Friday ever.

Well this confirms I wont be getting a damn thing done after lunch on friday at work.

I do half days (or day with the weird schedule this year) for the round of 64 every year. My favorite weekend of the year!!

hmmmm...familiar arched roof

Now, how many of those teams will fail the 7 days of Covid testing?

Looks like UVA are in quarantine and will try and travel on friday if they get the all clear.

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

That would be a massive boost to Ohio's chances if Uva only gets one practice day before playing

Tough to get a read on Florida. My best comparison would be the 2017-18 Alabama team that we saw in the first round. Perfectly capable of being a good team, perfectly capable of being a bad team. They beat Tennessee by 26 once and then WVU by five a week and half later. They also lost to Kentucky by 18 and South Carolina by six.

Looking up and down their roster, they have a guy named Keyontae Johnson who doesn't start and only gets 20 minutes per game, but he is tied for leading scorer with 16 points per game. Seems like a player who might get hot and kill us or he might not and help us. Tre Mann seems to be pretty steady. They have one big man capable of giving us trouble in Colin Castleton. Hopefully Aluma can treat him like he treated Jay Huff. They average 14.5 turnovers per game, which is 261st nationally. Have to take advantage here. The only thing they do well at is shooting the three pointer well. They are 31st nationally in 3P% but only 128th in attempts.

I'm sure David will have a much more informative and useful writeup. This is a confusing Florida team. Hopefully we don't get a good version of them.

Johnson is the player that collapsed during the game and had to go to the hospital earlier this season.

I believe he is out for the season.

My understanding as well.

That would explain why he had only started four games this season. I was curious because he was their best scorer.

Hope he is recovering well.

He was the SEC preseason player of the year. I haven't paid attention to Florida since he was ruled out for the year.

Castleton is their big threat inside, but he has had some off nights, particularly against talented PFs who are 6-9. Look for a big advantage on the inside when he sits and Omar Payne comes in to spell him.

PG Appleby vs Bede should be a good match
SG Tre Mann vs Alleyne should also be good, but Alleyne will need to be able to guard beyond the arc
SG Noah Locke vs Radford should favor the Hokies
SF Duruji vs Mutts should heavily favor the Hokies

The real war is going to be won on the bench.

When Aluma is out, Ojiako/Pemsl/N'Guessan need to be able to hold down Castleton and Payne
Cattoor vs Lewis should be a knock down, drag out fight
If Cone is healthy, he should be a significant advantage over Ques Glover

Mutts balled out last game, and I hope he does it again Friday.

Has there been any updates on Cone's status? I haven't seen anything in a while.

Maybe available later in the tournament if we make a deep run, most likely done for the season.

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

He was shown in the team selection instagram video wearing a full boot so I wouldn't count on him.

Johnson is the kid that collapsed on the court earlier in the season. Thankfully he is ok, but he is done for the year.

Paging HokieFireman- I (and others) have rejoined the TKP group on E$PN for the tournament bracket seems you were the creator of the group originally...i think you need to change the group motto from 'Buzzketball' to something else when you get a chance to avoid bad Mojo.....personally, i think 'Fuck UVA' has a nice ring to it......

My wife takes the kids and leaves the house while I watch my Hokie games.........nuff said

I'm honestly not afraid of any of the opponents we could run in to. I'm being realistic with myself, but really - we beat some solid teams this year and with a little bit of luck we could have some serious tv watching fun the next few weekends. Go Hokies!

Also - lots of talk about Gonzaga as the clear #1 and favor to win it all. I wasn't overly impressed with what I saw in their tournament, and as a program they have historically struggled to get out of the first weekend of the tournament. I think that tradition continues as they get bounced in the round of 32.

as a program they have historically struggled to get out of the first weekend of the tournament

Factually not true.

You would be extremely short-sighted to dismiss this team. They have 2 lottery picks, multiple NBA players, and a HOF coach. They played an extremely tough non-con schedule beating WVU, UVA, Iowa, Kansas, and Auburn. They've only played one game this year that was even within single digits--their win over WVU. They score 90+ points per game and were #1 in the AP wire-to wire. This is their tournament to lose.

Outside it's night time, but inside it's LeDay

Looking at recent history you have a point - they've had very good success. I was thinking historically, but that's probably not a fair comparison either... I'm also looking at this because of the chaos from this season and how the general body of work was much harder to judge vs. a normal year where there was consistency. All that said, I dont believe any of the #1 seeds make it to the final weekend. I think there are too many teams that either flew under the radar (FSU) or are reaching their peak at the right time (GT, UNC) that will make a deeper run than most of the country thinks.

The thing about not being able to judge teams like Gonzaga because this wasn't a quote unquote normal year applies to all the other teams too.

FSU didn't "fly under the radar". If anything, they were exposed the last couple of weeks with losses to ND and GT in the ACC tourney. Name the last really good game that FSU played.

Meanwhile, Gonzaga was just out there burying teams literally every game. They have significantly better wins than any ACC team you just mentioned (including destroying the top seeded/regular season champ ACC team). If your argument is the general body of work, name me one team that would have handled UVA, Iowa, Kansas, WVU, BYU (3 times), and Auburn without taking at least 1 loss. Sadly their game against Baylor was canceled due to Covid, but I would have put my money on them to win that too. And none of those games were played at home either.

I'm not saying its a guarantee that they win it all, but it's a fool's errand to bet against them at this point.

Straight killing it!
