Final Rivals 100

The list is right here: http://rivals.yahoo.com/footballrecruiting/football/recruiting/rankings/....

Tech has 3 commits in the final 100. (I clicked back through each year, and I think that's the most we've ever had!)

9. Kendall Fuller
59. Wyatt Teller
83. Holland Fisher

There were 6 total VA recruits in this year's 100, 4 will go to schools other than Tech: Derrick Green, Jonathan Allen (Alabama), Christian Hackenberg (Penn St.), Smoke Mizzell (UVA).

Shane, Scot, Jeff, and Derrick

Any chance Shane goes in with Loeffler and Grimes to pull Green? He was pretty high on Auburn. I don't know who recruited him there but Shane was recruiting him for us so he might go in again. Not that we need more RBs. If Green were to commit (and that's a BIG if), I could see Harris opening his recruitment back up and leaving and at least on more unhappy back that looks at transferring like Mangus.

Scratch that, apparently he said he will announce where he's headed on the 26th. That tells me that his mind is made up and we wouldn't go after him.

wasn't

VT in his top 6? Along with Auburn? I wouldn't necessarily count us out quite yet.

Forgive me if I'm completely wrong, it's been a while since I looked into Derrick Green.

Green is down to 3 .. Michigan, Auburn, and Tennessee. I'd say that there's at least a 75% chance that he ends up at Michigan.

I absolutely love the way recruiting is going right now. Lil' Beamer is out there getting it done. With Loeffler, Grimes, and Moorehead it can only go up right?

I have no idea why my username is VT_Warthog.

Arkansas blew a 24-0 lead in the Belk Bowl.

Kendall

Is he the highest ranked recruit being brought in Tech history? I feel like Tyrod was up there and he is Kendall is 18 spots higher.

No

Marcus Vick was #2 if I remember correctly, and Kevin Jones was #1... but I'm not 100% sure

And Jones also had that awesome dis of PSU right before picking us. Classic.

Rip his freaking head off!

Marcus

God that picture of him is awful, thanks for the share and info.

Kevin Jones was raned number 1 by a couple recruiting services.

Correy

finish strong

weve gotta finish strong. this is a really good class coming in if we can sign everyone. itd be a great way to start 2013 right. i still feel like we need to push hard for fisher simply because bama was after him. i love the fact the new coaches are already out there recruiting its a good sign of things to come

tyrod did it mikey! tyrod did it!

I'm pretty sure

Fisher is ours, as long as he qualifies. I've heard a lot of rumblings as to whether he will be able to get into Tech based on grades/scores, though. Fingers crossed he can get his stuff squared away.

that is awesome

I missed something, where did you hear the new coaches are recruiting?

Here's a list of every Rivals 100 player that VT has landed since 2001. It's worth noting that the 2001 rankings come from scouring Google. The rest are all listed on the Rivals.com database.

2001
Kevin Jones (No. 1)
Fred Lee (No. 80)
Bryan Randall (No. 80)

2002
Marcus Vick (No. 8)

2005
Macho Harris (No. 28)
Deveon Simmons (No. 93)

2007
Tyrod Taylor (No. 27)

2008
Ryan Williams (No. 47)

2009
David Wilson (No. 40)
Logan Thomas (No. 71)

2012
Joel Caleb (No. 84)

2013
Kendall Fuller (No. 9)
Wyatt Teller (No. 59)
Holland Fisher (No. 83)

Fuller is the first top 10 player headed to Virginia Tech since Marcus Vick in 2002.

While there are some notable exceptions (Lee, Simmons), most of these players were very productive/stars at VT. Also worth noting that the Hokies have landed as many Rivals 100 players in the past two years as they did in the previous six combined.

Wow most of those are offensive players. Then you get to 2013 and all defensive players

@VTimHokie85

That is what I'm stoked about.

Usually, Bud and his staff takes kids from under the radar and turns them into stars. I am excited to see what he can do with kids that are already considered among the best.

Deveon

I went to high school with Deveon. I wish he would have had his head on straight and actually made it to Blacksburg. He would have been a beast for Bud!

Fred Lee

Was Fred offense or defense? I can honestly say I don't remember this kid at all. He had a pretty solid name, too bad he didn't pan out.

If he was a D he could've been FredLeeing people...

Peter Warrick type of WR.

He was from PA and choose us over Michigan State. Then he didn't qualify, went to FUMA or Hargrave and eventually ended up at VT I think. But was never very good.

It's hard for me to keep him separate from Richard Johnson, another diminutive WR who was highly regarded but never panned out.

Ahhhh Richard Johnson

The ole' Dick Dick.

Thanks for the info. I'm sure this has been done (perhaps even here) but I wonder what the fail rate is on 4 and 5 star prospects, or even just those in the rivals 100. I would assume that the success rate (meaning they actually start at some point in their career) would be relatively high. I know we are some huge stat fans on the site, might be a cool project to make up for this gap between the coaching staff apocalypse and spring practice.

Just scratching the surface, obviously

But Rivals last year had an article showing where they rated the 1st round picks when they were in high school.

Also I think Bill Connelly has shown there's a pretty strong correlation between recruiting success and wins, though I don't have the articles in front of me at the moment.

EDIT- found the article from 2010. Most of the data is in ESPN Insider articles linked in the story but the free version is useful. I thought he updated it since then.

Thanks for the links; it's very interesting info. I guess I more wonder of the rivals 100, how many actually start and/or contribute to a team over a period of time.

On a funnier note, the rivals link under Weedon "Rivals didn't exist when Weedon was in high school" HAHA, he's ooooooooooooold

That's exactly what I was just thinking, that was hilarious.

Rip his freaking head off!

Who was older..

...coming out of college, Weedon or Wienke (sp?)?

I think it was Weinke by a few months.

Depends on how you define 'fail'

Just starting is really not the determining factor for success - hell, 2-3 stars start. Excelling is the benchmark for 5-stars, and what we know is that 40-50% of them end up getting drafted.

Reality has a mighty pimp hand.

what can we expect to change as far as recruiting goes? is it unrealistic to think that the new guys on our staff can help us have legitimate shots at recruits across the country?

"were not gonna back down from anybody" - shane beamer

Loeffler and Grimes have traditionally.....

focused more on recruiting their position as opposed to recruiting their geographic area. This, in my opinion, is a big change that we could see from VT. Look in the spring for VT to have offers to offensive lineman in odd areas like Texas, Florida, Illinois...maybe even Colorado and California. Thoughts on new recruiting areas:

Stiney: 757
Shane: Richmond, prep schools, Georgia
Cornell: Southside, SWVA, Valley, Baltimore
Torrian: Ga, FL, SC, DB's
Bud: Nova, LB's
Wiles: NC, FL
Loeffler: QB's, PA, MI
Grimes: OL, Tx, Bama, West
Moorehead: IL, DC, MD, NJ, NY, West

I think I read somewhere that...

I think I read somewhere that Cornell is taking over the 757, which makes little sense to me. Maybe Stiney's new position doesn't allow for him to be on the road as much?

Stiney and Newsome have shared the 757

the last few years. They may be moving Cornell into Newsome's old role.

Cornell, to this point, hasn't shown much recruiting (or coaching). It's a highly risky move to give him all of 757.

High risk, High reward

I think Cornell has what it takes to be a really good recruiter. If Tech can get Brown in the 757 area and start making his connections now, that should pay dividends down the road.

Coaching football has to be the easiest part of the job for a former player like Brown. Recruiting, that calls for a completely different skill set that I wouldn't necessarily expect a young coach to have. He'll improve, and as he does he'll be entrusted with more and more responsibilities on the trail.

I doubt it will change things drastically. I'm sure we'll still focus on the same areas. It will be nice to have ties to other places though.

It would be nice for us to get the 5 star recruits in Virginia to come here instead of them going out of state, or even worse... UVA (Even if they are drunken idiots that kick cars)

"Go Hokies!" - Thomas Jefferson
@HaydenDubya

I'm not so sure that I want the drunken idiots that kick cars, UVA can have them.

But the rest of them (which is to say, pretty much all of them), yeah, it would be nice

When we start to win the big games on the big stages, those 5* will come. Hopefully the Loeffler/Grimes era will be the change that we've needed to get us down that road.
