Bitter blog - Trey Edmunds breaks out in scrimmage, although offense's day a little 'disappointing'

“We have to have an identity of what we are and who we are,” [Loeffler] said.

That, ladies and gentlemen, is exactly what we want to hear.

Then Leoffler goes on to say, “[...] if you have 9,455 schemes you’re normally not good at any of them[...]”

If I didn't know any better, I would almost say that is an incitement against Stinespring.

I can't wait for the Spring Game. Bring them on!

I support Logan Thomas and make no apologies for it.

The Die is Cast

Simple is smooth. Smooth is winning games.

Also:

The specialists had a decent day. Kyshoen Jarrett had a 37-yard punt return. Cody Journell made a 55-yarder after missing a 46-yarder earlier. His backup, Brooks Abbott, was 3-for-3, hitting from 27, 41 and 45 yards.

Is that Journell's longest FG ever? 55-yards is pretty impressive for someone whose range seems to be ~43-yards.

If I recall, Journell once kicked a 55-yarder in his high school game at Ripplemead, and that was what caught Beamer's ear. But, Journell, for some reason, struggle to connect when placed at past the 40-yards range. In fact, he missed two 40+ yards field goal attempts last Saturday in the scrimmage. In order to #BeatBama, he needs to be able to nail long-range field goal attempts, otherwise...

Well during the scrimmage last weekend he was practicing field goals from the sidelines.

Rip his freaking head off!

Yup, right in front of me. I typically sit in the front row near the South end zone so I can have full view of the OL during warm-up.

I support Logan Thomas and make no apologies for it.

Sounds to me like #BeatBama is even Beamer's motivation.

I like to play a real game and make it as much like we’re getting ready to play Alabama as much as we can, and kind of find out how kids react to that.

Rip his freaking head off!

How great is it that we have the punter and kicker situation squared away this year? Hughes really earned his keep last year.

PUNTING: A.J. Hughes 4-191 (47.8 avg).

I agree with you, it is very underrated. Beamer and Tech have made a living off of running the ball, playing tremendous defense, and mistake free special teams. I believe the defense will be very solid this season, the best we've seen since at least 2009, and the battery at kicker and punter will be the best we've had in a while. The offense won't be flashy, but they're being groomed to grind and break wills, and by the time fall rolls around, they'll be seasoned enough to do so.

I am very excited about Mitchell Ludwig too. I've seen him kick several times at Abingdon and he is FANTASTIC. He will definitely help out the program for many years to come.

He is an excellent punter. I think around 3:40 shows that he is smart in risky situations too.

The end of the video shows off some of his AMAZING field goal kicks.

Do you know what his HS career long FG is? The longest I saw on the video was about 45.

Not sure, but at John Battle during warm-ups he was making much longer than 45. VT invited him to walk-on.

if we dont have jarrett returning punts this year i am going to pull my hair out. i get that the coaches are afraid he might get hurt but i think hes way too good at it not to have him do it everytime

"were not gonna back down from anybody" - shane beamer

agree he reminds me so much of eddie royal and has that elusiveness that no one else does returning punts, he can really be a huge boost for special teams

tyrod did it mikey! tyrod did it!

Injury is definitely a concern, especially with our lack of depth in the secondary, but I agree I would like to see Jarrett return more punts given his skills. Does anyone think that stamina might be an issue? I would think that it could be very taxing to be out for a defensive series, then have to return a punt at the end. I'd hate to have an otherwise potentially awesome return get stuck because his legs are tired.

"Exit light..."

The annoying part of when Jarrett wasn't back there was that they'd use Holmes instead, who did next to nothing returning punts. I'd be okay with only using Jarrett back there on occasion when they need a big return if they had anyone else who could do a decent job.

I am as excited about Edmunds as the rest of the VT interwebs, but is this a breakout? I mean, it's quite a bit more compared to past scrimmages and compared to Holmes in the same scrimmage, but I'm still looking for a big Spring Game from him.

To me, breakout is Darren Evan's 200+ against Maryland, but I guess I'm a bit spoiled!

Hokies.

breakout would be rmfw's first run in whatever year's spring game that was.

"That kid you're talking to right there, I think he played his nuts off! And you can quote me on that shit!" -Bud Foster

Man I remember seeing that. Seeing him go like 80 yards on the first play and just thinking, "Who is that?!"

The fact he held his own against Bama was something else, too.

I was about to say this. The last time I'd heard someone spoken of so highly as a redshirt freshman RB, it was RMFW. RMFW's first game was against Alabama, and, aside from the punt drop, lit it up. I can still picture him running along the sideline and diving for the end zone.

Spring scrimmages rotate backs, and rotate 1st, 2nd, and 3rd team. Unless he is ripping off 20-30 yard runs every carry (which means the defense stinks as much as it means he is a great running back), he isn't going to get the work to gain a huge yard total. This isn't Bo Jackson on Tecmo Super Bowl.

Five star get after it 100 percent Juice Key-Playing. MAN

I had to smile at this quote

“You adjust quite a bit," he said. "You always have to adjust. That’s the challenge, adjusting. I’d love to have 6-foot-6, 260 pound tight ends that can run. We adjust and deal with what we have.
-Loeffler

Because we do have a tight end of exactly that size on this team!!! Only hes starting in a different spot...

I laughed to myself at this too

Is it bad that it took me a few seconds to realize you were talking about Logan? I was trying to think of which starting linemen had been moved from TE by Newsome/Stienspring.

given our history I think it is completely resonable

historically that has always been a good place to start - I used to wonder if Newsome even knew that you COULD recruit linemen out of high school

hahaha, bring in the Advice Hokie!
