Maybe I've been spoiled with the content this website provides but I've been searching multiple Notre Dame fan sites and articles to figure out what exactly their defense did to defend the GT triple option, with no success.
Everything I've seen references that they hired a "special coaching assistant" (Bob Elliot), whose sole purpose is to figure out a way to defend the triple option, but nothing describes how they did it. I didn't get a chance to watch the game and all of the replays/highlights only show the scoring plays, so they aren't much help.
Maybe this is a job for French, but does anyone know or have read anything that talks about the schemes ND used against GT? Holding GT to only 7 points for 59 minutes is an impressive feat and I'm intrigued to know what they did to accomplish that.

Probably looked at vt film.
Paparazzi reportedly caught a glimpse of the special consultant at work.
FTFY
hired Kyle Fuller as consultant. It was probably a little too good of coaching though, they were about to field only a single player but then Kyle reminded them that the rules state you have to have 11 on at all times. And that their Fuller played offense not defense.
This GIF never gets old...
Jaylon Smith played like a god.
fixed it
Thank you, I have no idea how I missed that.
Not sure we need to spend much time learning someone else's method to stop the triple option. Bud's system works, the offense just gave the game to GT last year.
I'm not suggesting that Bud should change what he does. This is not related to VT.
I just wanted to know what ND did, solely because I'm a fan of football and I'm interested in studying what changes they made to defend the triple option.
I misread your intention. But to answer your question now, they obviously have spent plenty of time studying French's film studies.
I'm betting Bud looks at and learns from any game where GT was stopped, including this one.
Sometimes Fett Man should be called Fret Man! jUst jabbin' you man!
I'd say both units can share blame on last year. 4th & 15 anyone?
Ugh
Stop That!
Bob Elliot has been at ND since 2012, don't think they hired him that long ago for this game.

They've played Navy (triple option) every year since hiring that dude, and probably many times before that. But yeah, it would seem kind of silly to hire a coach solely for that reason.
I could see hiring a (former coach) consultant for that game, but not a coach.
No other college football website, for Virginia Tech or any other program, provides the level of analysis as TKP. This joint is seriously on another level than any other football site in the world.
I will believe that after I finish looking into how good New Zealand has it when it comes to analysis of American Football.
I'm done looking into it. This site's definitely the best.
Because GT only tinkers with its formula, I imagine every coach who plays them reviews VT film and even before that the Iowa film when they dismantled GT in a bowl game about 6 or 7 yrs ago.
Playing D against GT requires discipline on every play and a certain level of athleticism. You can't really get by against them with with just one of those two elements. There is a super fine line on almost every play in that system between a no gain and a 64 yard TD run. That's why GT absolutely crushes teams that lack the athleticism to get on the right side of that fine line.
And it's also why their scores against lesser competition are essentially meaningless in gauging how good they are.
Da U would like to know what this dis...disci...(give 'em a minute. They have to sound it out)...discipline is. Don't you know how "Back" they are?
this made me chuckle but I think it would be much more appropriate for a majority of the SEC
I had the game in a rotation on my laptop while the Tech game was on my TV. One of the big things I noticed was that Georgia Tech seemed to be passing a lot, and wasn't very good at it (I believe the QB went 8/24). Seemed like Notre Dame jumping out to a good lead pretty quick got GT out of their gameplan.
Something we haven't been able to do since CPJ came to Georgia Tech.
I blame O'cainspring. I've never felt better about the possibility that this year we may just have the offensive scheme and talent to build a lead on GT.
Unfortunately, I can't remember the last time I felt less confident in our ability on D to stop them from scoring. Our Mike is going to need to be on task.
This could be a shootout.
I'm with you. We were on course to do it last year, and then Brewer fell apart with three picks, trying to force every throw he possibly could. If we get a smart effort by whoever our starting QB happens to be, I think we could go up by a couple scores in the first half and then just pour it on.
yeah i heard some guys talking about it and were asking why GT would change up what they do so well. Perhaps PJ thinks that his QB is more of a passer than other have been in the past so he's trying to add that wrinkle in to throw defenses off more. Any time we force them to pass to get back in the game (minus those two plays that didn't occur last year.....sads....) we usually come away with a win.
Until the very end of the game, GT looked like an inept HS offense. The were generally about a touchdown away from ND for much of the first, some of the second half. Once they went down two scores, guarantee inebriated GT alums were writing checks for the departure of Paul Johnson. Sandlot would be prettier to watch than PJ's ugly chop blocking arse. Unfortunately the scramble at the end of the game made this respectable, and PJ may have avoided a wave of disgust from GT alums.
Huge fan of Bud, but this was a complete dismantling of PJs system by ND. GT had 7 points until the last couple of minutes. UVA's performance against ND also gives pause. Its a long season, GT always battles with us. We should aspire to wreck that system the way ND did. Sick and tired of Paul Johnson in the ACC.
I'm inclined to agree with this. Personally I think it's boring as hell to watch GT play offense (unless KF is jumping across the L.O.S. causing havoc). And I don't like the injury potential chop-block o'clock presents to the Hokies. But outside of losing to us, I really only care about the jackets performing well against OOC competition so they don't make the ACC look bad. If he can't go above .500 against non-ACC P5 schools and at least start to come close to breaking even with UGA I'd just as soon have him "make like a tree and get out of here." If he can pull it together OOC then I'm happy watching his punchable face scowl away on the sidelines as it get's shut down by the Hokies.
Hasn't that always been the gamelan against GT since they started the triple option? Build a lead and they pretty much fall apart having to change up their game plan.

Here ya go
That's a great analysis. Thanks for posting the link.
I think GT will be adapting a bit, but it sure was an effective defense.
Meh. TKP analysis is superior IMO. That, and the author was writing this article as though nobody has ever stifled GTs offense, which just isn't true. He made it sound like Notre Dame did something that's never been done. Iowa did it, BYU did it, Georgia did it, VT has done it time and time again. I had a tough time reading the whole article because of that tone.
Agree , where has this writer been for the last decade? Obviously he has not seen many Tech vs tech games . Bud has used these alignments & tactics against gt many years and has usually been successful . Van Gortner did not invent this wheel.
Woah, an actual answer.
We all know how short sighted sports is. On the heels on what GT has done over the past 10 football weeks or so... ND stopping the cold is still hard to do, kudos for preparation from their side. I expected that game to be more 35-42 at the end, not a defensive show.
