4-star DT Ricky Walker Commits to Virginia Tech

Ricky Walker made a verbal pledge to the Hokies today during his official visit to Virginia Tech. Walker is a 6-2, 275 pound defensive tackle from Bethel High in Hampton, Virginia (where James Gayle played his high school ball), and both Rivals.com and 247Sports rank him a 4-star prospect. In 10 games last season he had 70 tackles, 11 sacks, and earned first-team all-Peninsula District and all-Eastern Region as a two-way player (DT and guard).

While watching Walker's highlights on YouTube and Hudl, the first thing that jumped out at me is his versatility. The Bethel coaching staff utilized Walker as a 1-technique nose tackle in the middle of a true 50 front (a nose, two 3-technique defensive tackles, and two wide defensive ends). In a four man front, they utilized Walker as both a 1-technique and 3-technique defensive tackle, and on passing downs they moved him out to end. He was productive at all three positions, and dominant as a nose tackle. He also had several really nasty pancake blocks as a guard. His coaches even considered giving him playing time at fullback. In high school football, with very limited practice time, it takes a very high football IQ to be productive at multiple positions, especially on the defensive line.

As I noted above, Walker was a very productive run defender at all three defensive tackle alignments. On film, he has a very quick first step into his assigned gap, and he consistently has low pad level. He gets underneath the pads of the centers and guards, stands them up, and then slides off the block. His preferred gap technique is a rip move, where he lowers his shoulder closest to the blocker and rips his arm through like a Mike Tyson's Punch-Out uppercut. His pad level and ability to cross the blocker's face to secure his gap makes him an excellent fit in Bud Foster's scheme. He has solid closing speed and demonstrates the ability to recover if he loses his gap fit.

In pass rushing situations, the Bethel staff used Walker as both a 3-technique and a defensive end. He isn't a dynamic speed rusher, but he has outstanding technique with multiple pass rush moves. At end, his strongest move is a two-step bull rush to get a blocker's momentum moving backwards, and then a hard inside rip technique. His secondary move starts off with the same initial bull rush, and then a quick swim move to the inside and outside shoulder. Finally, he gets sacks using a classic push-pull technique off the bull rush along with a straight bull rush. Even though he doesn't have blistering speed, each technique is incredibly sharp for a high school player.

I highly recommend watching the video. Even if you don't know a thing about the nuance of defensive line play, even a football neophyte would enjoy several of Walker's bone jarring hits and pancake blocks. His coaches lean heavily on him to impact the game in numerous different ways, and his talent and football IQ are smart enough to ensure production at Virginia Tech.

Welcome to HokieNation Ricky!

Boom. Big get. I absolutely love his film and measureables.

Hell yeah!

Let's get Nnadi too and then start moving onto 2015!

DyNoMite!

I love the kids passion but I don't see it happening. He doesn't list an offer from VT.

He may have picked up an offer this weekend.

Supposedly the issue is grades. Our coaches like him and he wants to come here, he just might not be academically eligible.

If he gets his act together academically, he's in. His football ability isn't an issue.

I was about to say, "What's not to like about 6'3" 230 lb OLB that will likely put on weight?"

But his problem appears to be grades, not physical ability. Too bad. Hope the kid gets it together and can be eligible.

What is this clip from?

Yes!

In Sam Rogers we trust.

I love it!!!

We're building something special guys...I can feel it.

Ricky will continue the youth movement and probably be starting next season.

Luther Maddy and Nigel Williams might have something to say about that.

Luther Maddy, Nigel Williams and Woody Barron will be in the 2 deep next year which leaves one spot open. We'll see if Kris Harley has shown enough or a guy like Walker and Nnadi will surpass him. Don't forget about Corey Marshall who could still get some reps at DT too.

VT '15

Don't expect to see Marshall at DT. He was redshirted this year so that he could play end. He'd be very undersized at DT just as he was when we tried him there in the past.

Based on what Coach Wiles has said in the past, he would love to rotate his guys in to keep them fresh and keep the rush hard in every snap. The more pressure the D-line brings, the more mistakes opposing QBs make. In a way, the D line pressure has a hand in our secondary looking this terrific.

Its possible Teller could be back at DT as well with 5 OL recruits coming in.

"I'm too drunk to taste this chicken" - Colonel Sanders via Ricky Bobby

And Alston Smith shooting up the depth chart. I say 90% chance he moves back to DL.

Smith is a Guard, Teller is a Tackle. My guess is that Teller is staying put on the offensive side.

I know that, but 5 new bodies coming in without nailed down offensive positions give Teller more flexibility with McLaughlin being a TR SO next year. I think he moves back, could be wrong.

We will see. I believe most of the recruits so far project more at center or guard than tackle. Also if French is correct and Teller can be an All-American type talent at tackle then I would rather him be there given the depth that seems to be being created on our DL.

I'll take that bet..

I am SO excited for the line play in the coming years! This is how you win National Titles.

Yeaaaahhhh!

Yeah hell yeah. Welcome to the family, Ricky. List of things to bring to college:

1) Your lunchpail

Well that's that. You can get the rest of your stuff when you get down here (GT RBs heads-on-a-pike, Miami QBs headstones, and Bar-B-Q'ed LOLUVA legs [which are kind of like turkey legs, but much less talented and more presumptuous]). You can get these things at Lane Stadium. Best part is that the schools mentioned actually PAY TO DELIVER THEM TO YOU.

Pencils, books, and the like can be found at the on-campus bookstore.

Food can be found at West End, or just read this

Great pick up!!!! Welcome to the family Mr. Walker

Reminder, his brother, Rijo Walker is a hoo DB. Just like Vince Mihota, whose brother played for the hoos.

Scoop!

@VTimHokie85

Looks like Melvin Keihn could be next.

I wonder how much longer Nnadi will wait to commit?

In Sam Rogers we trust.

Nnadi has said all along that he would be announce on or close to signing day. He will take all his official visits.

If I were a stud HS defensive recruit, I too would take all my official visits and not commit until close to signing day. Then I would sign with VT, the best defensive tradition in modern football.

"It's a Hokie takeover of The Hill ... in Charlottesville!" -Bill Roth

Especially if an Oklahoma State official visit has been scheduled.

I would take all of my officials at Oklahoma State.

Hell, I might move to Stillwater for my senior season.

I am really excited about Ricky Walker. I reviewed his junior film in depth over the summer and walked away so impressed with how refined his technique is for a young player. His coaches rave about his intelligence and how they trust using him in multiple roles. He will definitely be a defensive tackle in the Hokies system, but his ability to rush the passer really gives him an opportunity to contribute against spread teams as a freshman.

We have seen this year how top level defense tackle play elevates this defensive system, and past great defensive teams that ran into great offenses broke down at the defensive tackle position first.

Now, Walker is in the fold, they have an excellent shot at Derrick Nnadi, and hopefully get good opportunities with Settle and Darvin Taylor. That is a great core group to go with Nigel Williams and Woody Baron in 2 years.

Call me biased, but I don't think a college defensive prospect could ask for a better set of coaches.

which part?

Saw this on Imgur and was laughing way too hard. Reminded me of high school a bit.

Saw this on Imgur and was laughing way too hard. Reminded me of high school a bit.

That's where I got it from. As soon as I saw the comment on how old the guy looked, I had to share it. I lose it at that "'let me see yo report card...go get my belt,' face."

Is anyone else getting a kick out of how ghetto yet effective the whole "waiving the cursor over Ricky before the snap to show people where he is" thing is?

I saw that and thought something similar. First, "Don't they have a video editor where they can embed an arrow of some sort?", then, "Oh wait, there's no ambiguity here. I know exactly who it is," then, "Wait, how did they get the cursor to show up?", then, "Oh look, they just shove the cursor to the side when the play starts". Funny, but effective

We are trending UP with a number of our remaining blue chip recruits. We might close out a stellar recruiting haul.

Reality has a mighty pimp hand.

Yeah, could be a nice finish. Need another WR, Keihn, Nnadi, Minor, Payton....maybe Shai but probably not.

...and we gotta hold on to Harrison.
