Virginia football ended its offseason workouts Friday morning and the Hoos marked the occasion by, once again, breaking a rock paver. For those who don't remember, Virginia did the same ahead of last season, and ultimately lost to the Hokies 31-34 in overtime.

The rocks itself gets an 'A' for effort. The maroon-ish text either signifies the Hokies or implies it was whatever was on sale at Home Depot and Bronco bought in bulk. The mountains are and homage to mountains, because, 'Hell yeah boys, get after in the trenches like tectonic plates colliding'. It's an arts and crafts job worthy of a pat on the back and a 'Hey, at least you didn't set your house on fire'.
From breaking huddles with "Beat Tech" to thinking about beating Tech on the field and in the bathroom, this is a focus of UVA because it's been 15 seasons since the Hoos have beaten the Hokies. Related: Virginia Tech recently exceed 5,000 (5,354) straight days of Commonwealth Cup possession.

Looks like they're breaking the Coors Light Rockies on that paver
Really? When I saw it for the first time I thought "Buuuuuusssch".
This would've been genius if it worked the first time (they actually beat Tech). But they didn't. So now it's just pathetic.
I guess that whole "New Standard" only applies in certain areas of their program.
They should just go ahead and order up enough for the next 10 years so they can get a discount
#Drivefor25
Word is that those things are like 20 for $30 anyhow. So they might have enough for another 18 years as is.
Eventually, they just might succeed. It's like the old saying: a broken rock is right twice a day.
yeah I was about to say.... Joe, drink!!
Now is a good time to purchase pavers, since it's approaching the back end of the outdoor project season.
As mentioned on the other thread...
Damn, Bradburn. Savage. That man had a family.
#PunterSwag
I'm no coach here, but you'd think at some point he (or anyone in this program for that matter) would stop putting so much emphasis on the Cup. It's kind of embarrassing and leads to things like stupid fumbles in OT. Never mind, keep doing what you're doing Bronc!
Yeah, the Bradburn comment was Savage
Can we send UVA a piece of Hokie Stone? If you say "break a rock", then by god you should break THE Rock!! Go Hokies!!
WE all have been a little down on the state of our program, but this just pisses me off! Maybe Tech should have a " bust a Brie Croissant " party in response to the soft neighbors to the north!!!
"Can we send UVA a piece of Hokie Stone?"
I thought we have been giving them the stones for the last 15 years, have we not?
Never. Hokiestone is for winners.
Live footage of UVA trying to break Hokie Stone.

Can't they get some from their stadium, Lane North?
To be fair if I put this amount of effort in my post Joe would have beat me to the punch.
Carruthers come help me lift this hammer, I'm finding it a skosh heavy
At this point, the obsession goes beyond just 'living in their heads rent-free'.
Geez.
You can tell in the video that Jordan Mack has never swung a sledge hammer.
Good way to hurt yourself holding onto just below the head all the way down.
What could we "Break" and put it up on Social Media? Break the Cavalier Hat?
Just run clips of sad Wahoos from the last 15 years, we breaking hearts
Their minds, bodies, spirits, and souls in Lane North this November.
And every November that comes after
Is it me, or the year reads closer to 2619, than 2019? That's a lot of years of wanting to beat Tech.
By then, the streak will be intergalactic..lol
I just watched the highlights of last year's game again. Hoo tears.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-tuHX3Q96bk
Damn, this highlight reel, made my freaking day! What a game!
Being in Lane was the best...watching them all tuck tail after all trash talking.
oh man so many big plays from 'Big Play' Tre Turner to open up the game. Then Joe Reed doing his best to get UVA back in the game.
And Keene with the HUGE grab on 3rd & 10 in the 4th followed by Peoples rumbling up the middle only to have the ball kindly relocated into the endzone by UVA's defender.. glorious.
And I forgot that Willis really did save a TD by tracking down Harris after the interception earlier in the game... the clock ran out on the 1st half during that play meaning UVA didn't even get to attempt a FG. Difference in the game.
During the ongoing streak we have outscored them 450-180. Dayum. Only 5 games decided by one score. I hope this keeps going.
Someone paint the T next to their V.
Bud Foster has dominated UVA for 15 years. That has really been the difference in the streak. UVA has not had a great offensive game against VT in over a decade. Bud hates UVA as much as I do, and prepares accordingly. One day Bud is not going to be coaching at VT any longer, perhaps after that day UVA will beat us. Not until then.
Very true. Averaged only 12 ppg against VT during the streak with the highest four scores being 31, 21, 20, and 20 everything else is below that.
That's why I was shocked when Bud's name was floated for the HC job at UVa a few years ago. I couldn't imagine a worse fit culturally than Bud and UVa.
No kidding, but Bud is no dummy.. plenty of money, close to Richmond and 757- he could have gotten some players in there- culture or not
Bud and BYU
A superb prank would be for someone to sneak into their facility and replace their paver with a square piece of Hokie Stone painted to look just like it. Then, in the ultimate representation of their futility, they could keep hitting it and failing miserably.
This whole endeavor is just a perfect microcosm of the series. Practice against a poor facsimile of the real thing, boost (unearned) confidence, get all pumped up and confident about it, then hit the real thing and fail.
Not to defeat the sentiment, but isn't limestone one of the most brittle stones? I feel like a good smash with a sledgehammer would easily break it into a number of pieces. Any geologist experts here?
Not necessarily. It depends on a ton of factors, but limestone in our region is a pretty robust and durable material. It's used as an aggregate in nearly all the asphalt and concrete mixes you'll see in Virginia for that very reason. It's certainly harder than the 2000 psi discount paver that they broke in the video.
Dolomite, the type of limestone that is Hokie Stone, is in the 14k-15k psi range...
So there you go, it's in the range of 1kpsi for every year in row that we have owned the Commonwealth Cup. Not too bad.
Thanks for the facts, both of you. So, I guess it'll at least be significantly harder to break.
I was so confused after viewing the first thread. and then seeing a similar thread title saying I didn't view any of the comments.
Here you go Joe... a nice drink for you!
Dax commented on twitter to Bradburn and included three pics of him and the fumble sequence in OT. This dude is a boss
Anything that will unify a team to get thru Summer/Two-a-day's/boot camp.... if I were the coach - whatever it takes, I'd use it! We better be ready this year!
And uva fans love to taunt tech fans like "oh keep holding on to that football streak because it's all you've got. We have so much success in other areas we dont even care about football" yet they embrace this move that's all about obsessing over beating us in football
They will get us eventually, and part of me thinks it could make the rivalry interesting again.
But then I remember that I would rather just keep breaking their hearts every season
It's so nice to see LOLUVA still doing hard things together (even in the bathroom). I wonder if the paver shattered like their dreams or if it takes all of their strength to break it and then they were still defeated.
We all know Bronco bought those pavers last year in bulk from the clearance section. I still think it was a paver pinata so they look tough when it breaks. And if it is a pinata, does Zima come out of it?
Can honestly say I'd be embarrassed if we pulled this, and even more so after they did it and took the L last year. Just put a sign on the locker room wall, put your heads down and focus on turning this back into a rivalry anyone outside of VT-UVA cares about with play on the field. There are 15 other ways to motivate your team that don't include this gimmicky BS.
This is truly symbolic of last season. Lots of build up and excitement. Disappointing end. I would expect the same in 2019.
Related: Virginia Tech recently exceed 5,000 (5,354) straight days of Commonwealth Cup possession.
You know its been a good streak when you can refer to "recently exceeding 5000 days" within a year of doing so and its still only a fraction (6%) of the actual streak. Go Tech.
I wonder if they had to blow up their muscles a la Daffy Duck to lift the big heavy hammer?
Two areas of weakness on this years LOLUVA might be even weaker. Transfer OL Gellerstedt out for the season and transfer WR Brissett wearing a boot and hoping to be back at some point in the "preseason"
Stock for Bronco for the rest of the streak...

I'm going to be that guy - why do we care about this?
Because #offseason bruh
It's funny.
Becuase UVA sucks...and it's fun to watch them do sucky things.
What's the over/under for how many attempts were filmed before they finally got it to break?
At least 15.
There in lies the problem right there.
These people want to lead us and they've never swung a decent hammer in their life.
Edit: come back to me and many of us here. Ask and we will Tech you to swing a hammer, back a loaf, brew a beer, smoke a ham and plow a row.
Life.
I love that the RT article this weekend said that UVa was actually using this moment to focus on Pitt and not VT.
Like, come on. The paver literally says 'BEAT TECH'. Don't give me that bullshit that you aren't obsessing about us when you're literally writing it on stone.
Correct.
It's written in stone.
But not a strong stone like Hokie Stone, it's written on a fragile cinder block paver.
Fragile just like their dreams.
That's what I'm talking about.
Nicely played.
Must be Italian
Just gonna drop this here...

loluva is going to have a patch on their jerseys this year for CFB150. If you squint, you can see the hyphen between the 5 and the 0. Lovely to have a tribute on another team's jersey.
