Looks like CBs for Derek Bermudez to Pitt and Cloudy. Are we still after him?

we are he has an official with us this weekend. just got home from officials with GT and Pitt in the last week. GT last Thursday and Pitt Monday and Tuesday last week. I talked to him after GT and I thought he was going to commit there honestly. And the Pitt staff seems very confident he is going to commit to Pitt after his visit there. VT will have a chance to seal the deal if they really want him. He really didn't get to get recruited he was committed to FSU and really shut his recruitment down from everywhere else. so this is the first time hes getting out, the first time I brought him up to VT his dad said was the first time he even considered an out of state school visit or anything.

on a sidenote I think its complete BS you can bring a kid into pitt and he doesn't spend time with the pitt panthers, derek posted a lot of videos and pics on his snapchat of his visit and he spent more time watching the Steelers practice and interacting with the Steelers players and coaches than the pitt people. how that's not some kind of recruiting violation is beyond me. youre selling kids NFL dreams at a college program that has 10k at home games. lame AF. if you ask me. but doesn't surprise me one bit with narduzzi.

Hope he talked to the Steelers starting safety.

lol no lie I text rell and told him when he sees him to put a word in. but he didn't see the message until it was to late and he didn't know he had any VT interest but he did say he met him. so i nonchalantly told Derrek about rells 1st round draft pick from VT and that his brother played for the Steelers too and his other brother was a first round pick the same year and the starting LB for the bills.

And backup RB

Seems like he's loving everywhere he visits. Have to hope we can get him to his OV uncommitted and then close the deal while we have him on campus. Do you know if he's planning on taking any other OVs and if he's planning on committing/signing during the early period? Thanks as always for bringing so much great info!

us and ole miss were the only 2 places he was taking OVs too. i don't think hell look at ole miss anymore with coaching change. i would not expect him to sign early but if someone gets him to it maybe a steal because if there was more time i don't know if whoever he signs with would have ended up being his final choice.

4 star RB kyjuan herdon from trinity highschool (Isaiah ford, chamarri conner HS) in jacksonville. previously coaching staff showed a lot of interest in him wanted me to get him up to VT for a visit but he was committed to ole miss and not taking anymore visits decommited this am with the coaching changes going on there. id like to get back in the mix with him if we don't end up getting some of the other guys weve been perusing hard in the RB room.

Never Forget #1 Overall Seed UVA 54, #64 UMBC 74

clease considering shutting it down, hasn't made a decision yet but hed be a 6th year sr and already graduated. cant really improve his draft stock I love clease one of my favorite players on the team but he is who he is the NFL odds aren't likely and hes battled through a good amount of injuries through out his career already and king will be getting even more of his reps next year specially considering they are essential the same style back with king being much more explosive.

Holston may not play football again either from what I am hearing.

ive heard some rumors from the caleb stewart camp that hes unhappy after spending all of last year in the dog house and then working his way into a pretty good spring and spring game to finish the year with not very many opportunities in meaningful snaps.

the only 2 I'm 100% positive are coming back are king, bell, and gary. but from all accounts that room is going to be about 1/2 the size it is now and the staff is actively recruiting RBS hard even though we have 3 signed already they have reached out to Kansas RB Khalil Herbert and are still pursuing 2020 guys. that room is in a complete rebuild and a major priority in recruiting for this staff, a couple misses in the last couple years on some studs really hurt us and then not being able to pull in feaster. he would have really been a huge get for us and saved us from so many QB runs (and surely seeing keene cameo at RB) because the staff would have trusted him in short yardage a lot more than McClease and King.

Jeff Sims on the market?

hes been talking with VT since about a week after taggert left so they've been pushing hard. I talked to sims right after taggert and he wasn't budging on FSU so I left it alone. talked to our staff at GT game and they brought up sims and asked me to reach out again and see if I could get him up for the pitt game. he was on board until tyree had a family thing come up and couldn't make it up (him and sims are tight) and then the weather just added to it and so he didn't end up making the trip. id say we have a decent shot at flipping him. but not solid.

So does a DE like this fit a Bud-like scheme? If so, would it be safe to assume we are only offering someone like this because Fuente is confident we will continue with a scheme similar to Bud's?

Or, if this type of player isn't much of a fit for a Bud-like scheme, does it indicate the opposite?

I wouldn't look into it that deeply. I'd guess it's Wiles operating as if it's business as usual. However, commitments are non-binding for both the player and school until a signed LOI is accepted. It doesn't hurt to have some recruits who feel a connection to the school but a new DC could come in and go in a different direction entirely. I do think it's pretty important for a hire to be made with enough time prior to early signing day to make some personnel and recruiting decisions.

#1 is Floyd so it's either a catch or TD....

Those are the old shoulder stipe uni's. Looks like Isaiah Ford so most likely interception.

After some sleuthing, we last played Western Michigan in 2014. The only #1 on the roster that year was Isaiah Ford, so it must be an interception. This is actually kind of hilarious. How did the graphics people let that go out?

The graphics people don't patrol a recruits Google searches so I'm guessing he just picked one from images. It may or may not be a coincidence that the school he's currently committed to is in the photo as well.

Hokies offered Charles Montgomery, 2021 4* ATH (FL); solid offer list (Bama, anOSU, LSU, FSU, PSU among other P5s)

I'm gonna be "that guy" and ask why aren't we recruiting all over VA like this? Am I a crazy VT alum because I want VT to recruit better in VA? Legit, every year we miss out on the top talent in VA, I don't even mean the #1 or #2 guy but we are lucky to get 1 or 2 out of the top 10 in VA. Trust me, I know CFB landscape and recruiting has changed a lot over the years, but it drives me nuts when I see highly ranked Virginia kids (especially O-line/D-line) that VT barely recruits/ sometimes don't even offer. Virginia is a gold mine with HS athletics for multiple sports, surely we can do better in our state. I understand Texas, FL, & California are the cream of the crop for HS football recruits, but I truly think we need to build a better recruiting base in the Commonwealth. I remember not long ago, VT was on some kind of short list with the likes of Texas and Miami for having highest percentage of players from home state on the roster. We have done a 180 from that, it appears Corn is sticking to what he know best and thats recruiting North Texas.

**I really am not trying to bitch and moan about recruiting, I'm just pissed about the way the season turned out with such an EASY schedule and am looking for any good news to make me forget about UVA winning the coastal.

Good to know, I guess now comes the hard part.

Pour some Beer on it

I've seen some places report that VA is growing slower than the US as a whole, and that some of our traditional recruiting areas (757) just have less people going to school/playing football/interested in VT.. (quick article here) As the state changes, more and more of our recruits are going to be out of state. Or time to cross your fingers Amazon employs a lot of athletic VT fans.

(I'd love an actual stats person to do a deep dive into changing Virginia demographics, or direct me to more detailed research that already exists)

A few years ago, (circa 2010) I was in Charlotte visiting some friends and had an interesting convo with an older VT alum talking about the economy in VA. We were up on a rooftop bar and were just shooting the shit when he found out I too was from Richmond. I never fact checked this, but the guy told me 50 years ago Richmond was the same size as Charlotte. He went on about how hard Virginia made it for businesses to succeed and want to move to VA vs. North Carolina. Basically the guy was trying to explain to me how far VA had fallen behind NC. Though we are no California or Texas, VA is a lot better off than a lot of states in regards to GDP. Being a coastal state is huge and last time I check VA was 12th, so not bad.

Pour some Beer on it

Sounds similar to Roanoke as well.

Old money content on no growth really hurt the area for a while.

I've heard from many (although probably an exaggeration) that "Roanoke could have been Charlotte" in reference to passing on airport expansion back in the 80's and allowing Charlotte to jump on the opportunity.

Who needs a bigger airport when you have train tracks for hauling coal and no train station?

Grew up in Roanoke. One of the craziest things ever.

Had a family member who wanted to experience train travel and they had to take a bus from Clifton Forge, I believe, into downtown Roanoke. Just bizarre.

Which is what they said in Birmingham, AL in the mid-50's.

Young says beyond Birmingham's segregation-minded power structure, Alabama lawmakers imposed an aviation fuel tax. Corporate leaders say the tax is just one way Birmingham's politicians showed they preferred the steel industry over aviation. Also, another overlooked factor is the fact that Birmingham sits in the Central time zone.

"I think we had a shot." Young said. "I think if we could have done something about the aviation tax and a little better leadership, we could have overcome the time zone issue."

Delta chose Atlanta, and the rest is history.

If you're not sure if my comment warrants a "/s", it probably does.

Not to completely derail a recruiting thread, but there's been a major shift in how the state does business now. Whether you care to put much stock into or not, it was ranked this year by CNBC as the #1 state to do business.

There's a reason Amazon ended up in VA. Yes, the specific location is as close to DC as you can get but still being in VA, but there's huge benefits to companies for tax purposes.

Yes, it's probably more instructive to look at individual MSAs than the state as a whole. Roanoke and Lynchburg are two regions where I still get the feeling local money still wants to keep "outside" money away. You certainly don't see that in NoVa or Tidewater, and you don't see it in Richmond like you used to. Don't know what that has to do with recruiting.

"Our job as coaches is to influence young people's lives for the better in terms of fundamental skills, work ethic, and doing the right thing. Every now and again, a player actually has that effect on the coaching staff." Justin Fuente on Sam Rogers

Don't know what that has to do with recruiting.

I hear you. If want to stretch it, I think what it means for recruiting is that those areas of VA will continue to rise in population over time, so a higher concentration of talent will come from those areas than others around the state.

Just my personal Opinion, BUT I think College Football is about to get turned upside down with the college athletes being able to make money off their image now. I think VT will struggle with recruiting in the future with being a rural campus/area. Universities situated either in or around large US cities are going to be able to offer more opportunities for kids to make money. I think schools like USC, UCLA, SMU, RICE, Houston, Northwestern, Miami and of course some of the big blue blood state schools will rise to the top for HS recruits as they will be able to make more $ while in school. I'm not trying to say that schools like NYU or Boston College are gonna be recruiting powerhouses overnight, I just think schools in URBAN areas with large media presence will come out better than rural schools. Anyone else think rural schools won't struggle with this new NCAA rule?

I remember when some of the ACC didn't want VT back in the day because they didn't think VT was bringing in a "major market" like a school like Miami is due to population in and around Southwestern VA.

Pour some Beer on it

There will be changes, and we will all find out together what those changes will be. But there are about a million high school football players, and about 10,000 FBS scholarship players. How many have the kind of name recognition that will translate into big money?

I happened to re-read "Meet the Bag Man" the other day. He talks about $50,000 and $70,000 and $3,000/Month payments to recruits. He talked about giving money to kids you know you're not going to land just to keep the pipeline flowing.

With that kind of money already out there, is the new rule going to have that big of an effect? Sure, there are a few kids whose likeness will make really big money, but only very few (and VT doesn't get those kids anyway). There are a bunch who will make a little money, but there's already money out there (and either we are already in that game or we're not, the new rule isn't going to change it). How many kids are there, realistically, who are going to think, "If I go to VT I won't get a big endorsement deal, but if I go to Miami I will"? I'm not saying the number is zero, but is it enough to make a real difference?

"Our job as coaches is to influence young people's lives for the better in terms of fundamental skills, work ethic, and doing the right thing. Every now and again, a player actually has that effect on the coaching staff." Justin Fuente on Sam Rogers

VT probably only wants/needs half of the VA top 10. And the blue bloods almost certainly want those 5 too. So realistically maybe 2, maybe 3 are plausible targets.

The blue bloods aren't just targeting Virginia. They're now going after the best players everywhere and anywhere. Teams can only sign so many recruits. If the ~15 blue bloods are going to pick off the cream nationally, VT is better off spending its time and resources recruiting regionally and picking off the regional kids the blue bloods would have signed previously, but are just below their radar now.

Same result (or better) from a talent perspective and you're not limited to a glut of a particular position(s) in Virginia. Plus you'll pick off some kids from the primary competitors (see NC2VT).

I remember when Fuente arrived he said Virginia recruiting was a priority. At the time I said this was a ruse and he would have to recruit regionally to compete.

The whole Texas thing lately is a bit of a surprise though.

The skeptical/jaded/woke/pessimistic side of me interprets the increased presence in Texas as a sign that Fuente is hoping to get back to the midwest sooner than later and is building relationships there through his staff.

This was my thought exactly... I have no objective facts to point to, just a feeling.

Is it basketball season yet?

The Texas thing is all Beau Davidson. He has been pushing it very hard and some of the staff has been very skeptical it could bare fruit. I'm guessing that after the Davis commitment they decided it wasn't such a bad idea to hit the state hard

So people don't need to follow the link

There's 165,000+ HS football players in Texas. There will be more opportunity for targeting players for the system, and finding those unrated kids who slip through the cracks.

Compare that to traditional talent pools like Florida, Louisiana, Ohio, Georgia, where the total quantity is less than 50k kids in each state. Here the talent gap between 3* and 4* kids isn't big.

VA is around 22k. The talent gap is also much wider. So securing the top in state players is a must simply based on numbers alone. And most have been going out of state.

But, we also need to emphasize talent. The coaches have shown this year, AD, that their evals on these freshmen and sophomores have been good. There's talent in Texas, and it comes in mass quantities.

I think the best answer right now for us is were recruiting where we have good relationships and where kids are committing from. its not that we aren't working VA. I can tell you Hamilton and Fuente are both working the VA beach region right now and have been the last couple days and then coming down to jacksonville tomorrow. But in my opinion we are actually doing a GREAT job of using our coaching staff for their strengths. beau Davidson for example is a texas guy and hes been working his butt off to make some roads in texas and we are seeing it pay off now. Charlie wiles has always been a florida guy and look at some of our all time best players and where they are from. Charlies still working florida. jafar williams is a Maryland guy and is recruiting up there. that's not to say our staff is just ignoring VA talent they are working VA and NC as the top priority but I think were looking at recruiting through a microscope if we are worrying about top VA talent instead of top NATIONAL talent. look at the schools coming in poaching kids from the VA region, you think their fans are saying we should recruit our area better? penn state has 5 of the top 25 players in VA in 2020 committed to them right now. (VT has 3 and the 28th ranked) UVAs first commit in the VA TOP 100 comes in at 33. when you look on 247 you should look at their national ranking instead of their instate ranking. itll tell you a lot more about the players were getting. VT isn't always loaded with top talent either. Why prioritize recruiting VA talent if VA talent isn't the top talent nationally? winning the state was important way back when because the only way coaches could evaluate players was by going to see them and trusting the relationships with the coaches who would call and say hey I got a kid for you come see him. So being in a close vicinity made it MUCH easier for coaches to look at kids. In the current land scape of college football the staff is much bigger and is able to evaluate a TON more kids all over the county BEFORE wasting anytime going to visit them. Now when VT goes on the road its to offer and maintain relationships with kids and coaches/ highschools, back in the day it was focused a lot more on evaluating first and then if they liked what they saw offering.

twitter @smithey_daniel

Nothing, but you're right. I think some people see dcwilson and think he's arguing with his comments without taking the time to read what he wrote.

โ€œTHE CUP IS GOING NOWHERE MIKEY!!! THEY DID IT SOMEHOW!!โ€

I didn't down vote, but it could be the "could have targeted part." What should be clear to everyone at this point is that VT did target plenty of higher rated recruits and it's just not panning out this cycle.

yeah I don't know I saw no reason to downvote at all I thought it was a good comment. I upvoted to even out though

Only 160 spots higher nationally but the #14 ranked player in VA. Seems like we have a decent chance at him. Also don't know if your question was rhetorical or not.

Gobble Till You Wobble

Thank you, and no my question was not rhetorical. It seems that folks have said that it's no big deal that we don't have any highly rated players from Virginia, because we are getting them from other states. That is not really true for 2020 though.

While i don't mind the idea of creating a texas or florida pipeline to Tech, it would be nice to take care of business in state. Especially in the new world of the transfer portal. I think you are much more likely to see out of state kids bounce to the portal than someone who is close to home already. No stats behind that, just seems to be common sense.

Gobble Till You Wobble

unfortunately I think we are getting big-dogged for the top recruits in the state year in and year out by Clemson, Bama, Pedo St, etc. I think that's why we focus our efforts else where like NC, SC, GA, and FL for the most part. We are still getting some good players out of VA, just not the top guys like we used to back in the early 2000's

โ€œTHE CUP IS GOING NOWHERE MIKEY!!! THEY DID IT SOMEHOW!!โ€

pedo state yes. no bama commits and no Clemson commits. after the top 25 in state players (and there are is a verfiety of schools with commits ranging from NCst, LSU, TCU, Stanford, Michigan, its all over the place) the majority of the players in the top 100 25-100 are NOT committed to power 5 football schools. that tells you A LOT about the talent in VA right now. if we had signed those kids everyone would be up in arms about signing kids with only ODU and liberty offers but since we didn't sign them everyone wants us to get more instate kids. ill say it again a 3 star in FL or TX with the same composite rating on 247 is more times than not a much better football player than a 3 star in VA because of competition level, coaching, etc.

twitter @smithey_daniel
head scout BSP scouting specializing in north florida/ southern GA highschool football scouting

Yea, pedo st is living in our yard right now (5 of the top 20 in the state). The Bama and Clemson comment goes back to the early and Mid 2010's. I agree with your comment about the talent gap. VA has one 5* recruit this year (Chris Tyree, ND commit) and eight 4* recruits ( various UF, UM, PSU, LSU, TCU commits).

โ€œTHE CUP IS GOING NOWHERE MIKEY!!! THEY DID IT SOMEHOW!!โ€

I'm damn tired of penn state living in our yard. GFTO and stay out. This is why my hate list is 1. UVAh 2. Pedo State 3. ND 4. Pitt (new) 5. WF
It's also why I will have a lot of emotion when VT plays penn state next year

Hokie Club member since 2017

Really? WF??

Just look at Penn State right now and it's no mystery.
1. Franklin is a young, dynamic personality that is not shy about his goal- win every game, settle for nothing less, Penn State is the premier program in America. That has been his message all along. We are Penn State, we are big time, we have national championships. He sells this 24/7/365
2. They win. Big. 10-11 games per year. They win national TV games, they play in the B1G title game, they play in and win NY6 games. they don't drop games to Maryland and Rutgers and Northwestern. They finish 1-2 most years in a brutally tough division.
3. Their facilities aren't posh and tacky, but they are big time- 110K seats, huge weight room, nice enough football facility, great academic facilities, etc. He sells their stadium as a huge point to recruits
4. They play and embrace the modern college football recruiting game. They are agressive. they recruit committed players hard, they keep recruiting their own commits. They play the game that most schools aren't willing to play.

These are the things that I feel VT won't compete with until we raise expectations. I honestly think that's what it will take- from Whit on down. We need to raise the expectations from- get better and win the coastal maybe... to we are going to take down Clemson as the premier program in the ACC- period. The future is now. Recruit like it, hold under-performing coaches accountable, and don't accept losing to Duke by 35 at home- ever. Raise the bar. Franklin will smoke us in Va. until we do that.

Cue logical fallacies and woe-is-me reasons for why VT cannot do this in... 5...4...3...

But in all seriousness I think college football is in for a major paradigm shift that may drastically reshape what matters in the sport and what resources it has access to...

our goal is to win the national championship in football it should be to win the national championship in recruiting as well. its just not as important to recruit at home because you aren't nearly as limited in evaluating guys all over and communicating with kids. the most important thing to me over winning the state is winning the guys you really want and really go after, in state of not. a lot of big in state last second losses lately really hurt us. guys we went all in on. we cant lose those. in state or not.

a lot of big in state last second losses lately really hurt us. guys we went all in on. we cant lose those. in state or not.

I agree with your primary point, that once we target a particular athlete we really need to land him. Can't argue with that. But I wonder about your phrase, "guys we went all in on." I wonder if the mistake was going "all in" on too few recruits, or the wrong recruits? Did we say, "all we have to do is land this one recruit and we will be set at this position," and then fail to evaluate and work on other recruits who could have mitigated the damage once those top targets decided to go elsewhere?

Or do we need to (and is it possible to) figure out earlier which kids are really likely to come to VT and which ones are wasting our time?

"Our job as coaches is to influence young people's lives for the better in terms of fundamental skills, work ethic, and doing the right thing. Every now and again, a player actually has that effect on the coaching staff." Justin Fuente on Sam Rogers

there is only so many coaches to go around. this is not VT problem its across the county. VT got on board with the OFFER EVERYBODY flood that broke the damn a couple years ago and there are only so many hours available for the coaches to use. we've consistently added more coaches to try and compensate for this but even teams with huge staffs run into these issues. all of what you said is accurate and is some of the short comings of EVERY football team in America. recruiting is a really really tough job. that's why good recruiters are such a commodity. it takes the whole staff to get a recruit from the top to the bottom. and even some outside help from the kids, his famil, coaches, friends, and even your friendly 904 Spider-Man. but it only takes one member of the staff to cost you a recruit.

I would love to understand the costs of recruiting (per recruit) coming from Texas vs Florida vs Virginia. More importantly, I hope our staff knows these numbers and uses them wisely.

we targeted higher rated. we were coming off a season under .500 and with a ton of speculation and uncertainty about the program and Fuente with all the transfers. add in we were super young which can or cant look like early playing time for kids depending how they look at it (either they can compete because there is no one that has a ton of experience over them or they aren't going to supplant someone who started as a freshman/ soph and they are going to have to wait 3/4 years to get on the field). winning goes a long ways in recruiting, momentum goes a long way too. No one should think we aren't actively going after the top guys in our state. we are. were just losing right now in those battles, winning on the football field will translate into more wins in recruiting. But I can assure you a 3 star in VA is not the same as A 3 star in florida, texas, cali. if we can keep getting 4 stars and high 3 stars in florida and texas that is equal to getting the 10th best player in VA. (atleast in this years class) VA is a really top heavy state in terms of talent. they usually have a couple blue chippers and then a BIG fall off to the next group of guys. florida and texas has a lot more top end talent. as a hokie fan I want much more to get talent from the south (FL, GA, TX, Louisiana, and some small places in SC, AL, MISS,) because the level of football is A LOT higher there than VA as a state (VA beach withstanding)

twitter @smithey_daniel
head scout BSP scouting specializing in north florida/ southern GA highschool football scouting

Valid Points. I would argue that very few- if any at all- 4 star players are intimidated by VT's depth chart though. We lost to Duke, BC, and UVA this year. I highly doubt a 4 star recruit looks at our roster and thinks he can't compete for early playing time. I'm just not buying that. All of the blue chip schools have more young talent than we do, and yet they sign higher rated players. I don't think our youth has scared away any highly rated Va. prospects. I really don't buy that.

I think a big part is that we also seem to not have the guys like 904 here for FL and Coach Davidson in TX pitching VT hard to those kids. I could be wrong but I just don't see VA HS Coaches on twitter out there recruiting for VT like those guys are.

โ€œTHE CUP IS GOING NOWHERE MIKEY!!! THEY DID IT SOMEHOW!!โ€

It depends on what you mean by "pitching. Coach Smithey does an amazing job selling the program as both a recruiter and a fan of VT. But there are VT Alum HS coaches as some of the best schools in the state. Highland Springs in particular has Loren Johnson, Derrick Hopkins, and Cris Hill all on their staff. I'd like to think they would put in a good word for the Hokies but I also know that they want their kids to succeed with the right fit. If we get back to being an ACC power and put more guys into the league, then I think those in state commits while see an uptick regardless of the blue bloods poaching.

I agree to an extent with you and I almost left that off but ive experienced a lot of kids these days that are so soft in the britches that they aren't scared to compete, they've been taught they don't have to. so they seek out the shortest, easiest route to not doing so. obviously this isn't ALL kids. but there is a reason that the college football landscape has had so many more upsets recently than in the past. the talent is spread ALL over and the depth of teams outside of blue blood programs is not nearly as deep. Kids will go to ODU to be the guy before they go to VT to be in the rotation of guys. don't believe me check the transfer portal and I know how to feel about it but it doesn't change the facts. You want the kids that welcome the competition on your team they make them and everyone around them better.

A fair amount of his posts are like that. People just tend to remember the blow-up argument posts.

If you're not sure if my comment warrants a "/s", it probably does.

Yes. Enjoy it. And be kind.

It's not all about going after the highest rated kids.

I'm sure VT has every kid in Virginia they really want on their board - and those they would take if they don't get the ones they want.

But some kids - probably quite a few - with high ratings aren't a good fit schematically, culturally, academically, at a position of need and/or VT feels they're simply overrated. I think if you go back and look number of high profile VT "misses" on high rated recruits over the years who did not live up to expectations elsewhere, the percentage is decent amount higher than most would think.

I thought about making a new thread for this, but decided instead just to drop this screenshot here (from twitter yesterday; I screenshotted the image, but couldn't find the tweet this morning, sorry).

Perhaps someone with more knowledge in recruiting (or more time than I have available right now) could go through the top 10 players in VA over the last 4 cycles, and determine who we (a) did not targeted at all, (b) targeted, but they dropped us early in the process, (c) targeted, but they dropped us late in the process (meaning we made his top whatever), or (d) targeted and signed with us.

I also think it's worth noting that VT is not easy to get to from a lot of places in Virginia. I'm not sure it's realistic to think we should have an 'in state recruiting advantage' for players in the DMV when UMD and PSU are located closer to these players' homes than VT is.

As others have pointed out, we need to hire the best coach we can. It is hard for me to believe the best coach for VT at the moment is JHamm. That's not to say he won't or couldn't be a good option later - I think he could be, but his experience at the moment, and whatever 'grooming process' is required, shouldn't take away from our ability to find the best coach we can right now. JHamm needs to focus on safety play atm.

Stars matter right? Well lets have some fun with that. Des Evans started out the year in 247 rankings as a 5*, then was dropped down to literally the top 4* probably because some people see what I've seen watching him locally, he just doesn't look like a 5* (still a very good player, but not a one that dominates his competition every game consistently). However, commits to UNC and magically, 247 lowers their standard for a 5* by .0001 and now Des Evans is back to a 5*!

No doubt this has nothing to do with evaluations, this was politicking by the 247 UNC website - Inside Carolina. You know who also works at 247 Sports as a recruiting analyst? Clint Brewster!

To seem, rather than to be - the UNC Football motto!

To be fair, he got lowered after he committed to UNC, and then they bumped him up again

Even better

Pretty sure 5-star is just the top 32 players in the class. That means someone ranked around 32 will vary depending on movements of those around him. In all likelihood he got bumped down because someone's ranking was increased slightly, then later got bumped up because someone else's rating decreased slightly. While I don't doubt the pettiness of football coaches, the kind of conspiracy you're talking about seems like a hell of a lot of work for no tangible gain.

EDIT: Adding quote from 247 site for proof, https://247sports.com/college/appalachian-state/Article/247Sports-Rating...

100 - 98 = Five-star prospect. One of the top 30 players in the nation. This player has excellent pro-potential and should emerge as one of the best in the country before the end of his career. Prunty, a 3-star CB from Portsmouth, who had been predicted to VT by 247 just committed to Kansas

Burden was his lead recruiter, and Mitchell would have been his position coach.

Karon Prunty, who decommitted from Liberty soon after we offered him just committed to Kansas. Was 100% predicted to us in the 247 crystal ball, but his lead recruiter was... Zohn Burden.

He's only 110% committed, though.

Zohn Burden to Kansas, confirmed.

He is the type of player that some get upset when we don't sign (we had 100% of the crystal balls and couldn't close) and some get upset that we ever even offered (great another low 3* that we stole from Liberty). What makes following recruiting so fun is that it feels like those factions also overlap (we can't even sign low 3* guys we tried to steal from Liberty).

Coach Glover (Tony Grimes' Dad) is not liking us letting go of Burden on twitter. I try to not care about recruiting because it's so volatile, but I'll be damned if I don't get pulled back in with at least some interest every single time.

I don't think i've seen a Landyn Watson embed in the crootin thread yet, so here it is. Coach Beau's been retweetin him. 12 P5 offers

Is it basketball season yet?

So of course his message changed again, but that's not what caught my attention. Coach Prioleau new staff maybe? Or just moved up for bowl game?

Prioleau is the interim CB coach, haven't seen anything about whether he will get the job full-time or not.

OH HELL YES STEALING RECRUITS FROM LEFTY

Some have argued that this is a purely developmental class, and the intention is to red-shirt everyone with a focus on 2021 recruiting.

I really can't stand that argument. Tech is on the verge of winning 9 games and still averages (at recent check) the third worst average-recruit ranking in the ACC for the 2020 class. Throw out the 77th overall ranking with the class being "small", but the per recruit grade still is a concern. Not being able to leverage the fact that they exceeded expectations with W-L record this year is a real issue to me, so you're then left with the presumption that Fu has to be the smartest coach on the block when it comes to evaluating and offering this level of talent.

DD being in the boat for 2021 is great, but I've been sold a bill of goods for 7 years now that "the next class is going to be the one". Couple that with J-Ham's announcement, and the fact that he has under a year of experience on staff, let alone P5 football, and that he is listed only as a secondary recruiter for a single commit, and I don't think that this staff has earned the benefit of the doubt about recruiting. At which point you have to argue, why is it OK for this class to be on track to be one of the worst for VT in the modern era?

/rant.

Fuente has a chance to win 9 games in 3 of his 4 years at Tech. Can things continue to improve? Of course. But everybody take a deep breath and step back from the ledge.

To piggy back on that - this is the list of coaches who have a better winning percentage since the 2015 coaching carousel:

Ed Orgeron
Kirby Smart
Mike Norvell
Mark Richt
Lane Kiffin
Luke Fickel
Clay Helton

This is the list of coaches who would have more 9 win seasons in that time frame if we beat Kentucky:

...

I get there have been some head scratching decisions but some of yall are acting like we havent topped 7 wins in any of his seasons

Orgeron and Smart each have three 9+ win seasons and Helton could with a bowl win.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

Orgeron, Smart, Helton, Fuente could each have 3, but none would have "more 9 win seasons"

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

Orgeron: conference title, playoff appearance, NY6 bowl
Smart: conference title, conference runner up, playoff appearance, NY6 bowl
Norvell: conference title, 2 conference runner-ups
Richt: conference runner up, NY6 bowl
Kiffin: 2 conference titles
Fickell: conference runner-up
Helton: conference title, 2 NY6 bowls

Fuente: conference runner-up

I get that Fuente hasn't cratered the program but some people talk as if everything is sunshine and rainbows.

Well, he does seem to be in good company, so I'd say there is more sunshine and rainbows than clouds and rain.

If the Orange Bowl hadn't been a playoff game in 2016, we probably would have had a NY6 bowl as conference runner-up too...

Nevermind, I should've researched first: we got jumped by FSU for the Orange that year. It was not a playoff game

We were also jumped by Louisville for the Citrus Bowl because of Lamar Jackson being the Heisman, and since WVU was the Big 12 #3 and went to the Camping World Bowl, we declined the invite there since we opened the next season with them. So fell all the way from possible Orange Bowl bid to tier 1 Bowl.

Unless something big changes between now and signing day this class is certainly underwhelming; however, there is still time for an upswing. Something that is shocking to me is to see these kind of rants (which aren't completely unjustified) repeated in recruiting threads for the last 6ish months with no consideration for the fact that last years class was the best in the modern era. Sure, it would be great to string together phenomenal classes but acting like recruiting is foreign to Fuente or not a priority is just incredibly short sighted. I want this class to be better for optics and momentum, I'm also not going to assume none of these 3* guys will produce and I'm also not going to use the single data point of 2020 recruiting to argue this staff is inept when the 2019 data point was our best ever.

IMO the bigger criticism is roster management where you allow things to get so out of whack that you only have 5 seniors on your roster every 4 years. That is a cycle we need to break, not to mention the under and over emphasis on certain position groups. The gripe about recruiting in general; however, is overblown, or atleast not properly framed.

"Something that is shocking to me is to see these kind of rants (which aren't completely unjustified) repeated in recruiting threads for the last 6ish months with no consideration for the fact that last years class was the best in the modern era."

Citation needed please, or at least a clear definition of "modern era".

2019: 25th per Rivals
2014: 25th per Rivals
2015: 24th per Rivals
2013: 23rd per Rivals
2012: 22nd per Rivals

I think modern era for recruiting typically goes back to mid 2000s when the internet and recruiting services really started revolutionizing recruiting. That has always been the consensus around TKP when these discussions take place. As far as asserting 2019 is the best ever the two other contenders are 2018 (also Fuente) and 2012 which was a real dud in retrospect. Also, 247 is way more reputable than rivals and the numbers I used below are from their composite rankings which include their evals along with Rivals and ESPN.

2019: 7 composite 4* average .9137
2018: 7 composite 4* average .9067
2017: 5 composite 4*
2016: 1 composite 4*
2015: 4 composite 4*
2014: 4 composite 4*
2013: 1 composite 5* 2 composite 4*
2012: 6 composite 4* average .9144
2011: 3 composite 4*
2010: 4 composite 4*
2009: 4 composite 4*

Class ranking doesn't matter near as much as the recruit average and # of blue chippers (see all previous conversations about champs and blue chip ratio).

If the recruit grades are higher but the class rank is the same, are they really recruiting better, or are recruit grades inflated?

That would take a massive amount of analysis to determine because it could also easily be that the top schools keep getting more of the better recruits, leaving less for the rest, so recruiting can improve without class rank improving. In general I think it's safe to assume that the recruiting grades don't inflate so substantially from one year to the next to make recruit average a void metric. Anyway you slice it the data shows that Fuente is responsible for two of the top 3 ranked recruiting classes over the last 12 or so years, even though he is only responsible for 4 classes out of the 12. The notion that he and his staff are incompetent recruiters, or don't care, is laughable and ignorant even with the disappointing 2020 class considered before completion.

Edit: 2 quick data points 2019 had 384 4* or better recruits (0.8900+ average). 2012 had 376 4* or better recruits. This seems to indicate that inflated scores would be negligible at best over this period.

Recruit ratings could be inflated, but most of the time it is simply a numbers game on how many players you take. A class of 20 recruits with and average rank of .88 will be ranked higher than a class of 15 with a ranking of .89

I know Holland Fisher is two of our most highly rated recruits (in two different classes), according to 247.

Which makes me think that some of those classes might have been inflated with recruits we never got.

Fisher is a relatively rare case but from a purely recruiting perspective he counts because we recruited him vs some stiff competition and won. The fact that he never qualified academically sucks but we still recruited him successfully.

Well we just moved on from 3 coaches and 1 of them was directly related to his inability to recruit (B. Mitchell.) Zohn for being the Va guy and RB coach showed flashes of recruiting prowess but then again he missed on several big time VA RB's recently.

Not sure what to say about Wiles. His FL connections will be missed.

Lastly, from all accounts JHam has been touted as being dynamic on the trail and on official visits.

I might argue that our current results are not OK and we are starting to see changes made because of it... But let's be honest it will be tough to fix 2020 at this point. We'll have to do what we can and weather the storm. Hopefully the changes being made can boost 2021 and on.

and 1 of them was

all of them were

If you're upset about being sold that for 7 years then that's an issue that predates Fuente and I believe you're getting caught up in the monetized recruiting hype machine, which is literally designed to suck in college sports fans and make them feel like every year could be the year their team makes the big jump.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

Hopefully 2021 is a developmental class too. And '22. And '23. And '24....

VT is never going to recruit at a top 15 level. To truly compete for league titles, VT needs lots of r-Jrs and r-Srs on the field every year, not 1 or 2 years every 4 or 5 years.

Somewhere, someone is saying...

If you're not sure if my comment warrants a "/s", it probably does.

Sources are reporting that ODU new head coach is Rick Rahne, the Penn State offensive coordinator. I saw on reddit some Penn State alum were worried they might lose some recruits as he is one of the better recruiters at PSU. VT just let go of our BEST recruiter in Burden and now this...I really hope VT can get our act together with recruiting. #STARSMATTER

Pour some Beer on it

I see where you're coming from, but I view it differently. I think this, in general, is good for Tech. Yeah you might lose some of the fringe 4-star guys that Rahne can convince to come to ODU, but you (potentially, assuming Rahne is responsible) lose less of the solid 4-star to 5-star guys to Penn State.

Could some of his recruiting prowess be attributed to being able to sell a sexy product? There is a faction of folks that believe recruiting at blue blood schools can be attributed more to the program than the person.

I think we should be more concerned with those kind of hires at other regional ACC schools, since ODU is likely never going to surpass us due to conference affiliation, funding, etc.

fringe 4-star guys

Is there such a thing?

Eh, Burden was alright but he started to do more damage then good towards the end of his time here. He will land on his feet though, maybe at ODU.

In Sam Rogers we trust.

Lmao selling recruits on Penn State versus ODU is a whole different ball game. In no way do I worry about someone out-recruiting Virginia Tech at ODU.

Yep. And PSU might have a small temporary bump in the road, but in short order they won't really miss their best recruiter.

Some recruiters are better than others, but the bell curve for each program is pretty narrow. Short of some momentous or cataclysmic event, you just don't see much change in the relative positioning of programs in the recruiting wars regardless of who is on the coaching staff.

Clemson is an exception but even so they were still on the cusp of being a blue blood in the lengthy dark ages for that program.
