Meta: New Downvote Feature Request

So I know Joe absolutely loves when we come begging for new features on this site (not like he has a real job, or family or anything else that actually takes up his time other than TKP), but, I think an update to the downvote feature could be super useful.

If a user reports a post on Facebook, Facebook provides a quick pop up asking why you're reporting the issue:

Perhaps if TKP had a feature that required the downvoter to specify which Community Guideline(s) were broken in order to downvote a comment, we'd see less fat fingers, less noise about posters complaining about downvoting, more data about why comments are downvoted, and ultimately, less downvoting. I imagine that this could reduce the workload for Joe and the other site moderator(s).

Thoughts?

No disrespect to DC. I appreciate most of his takes, agree or disagree. He just has downvotes raining on him more than anyone else.

I think a lot people who downvote simply because they don't agree with the comment don't have the guts to leave their own comment.

I used to be with it, but then they changed what it was. Now what I'm with isn't it, and what's it seems weird and scary to me.

I think a lot people who downvote simply because they don't agree with the comment don't have the guts to leave their own comment.

Oh but there are plenty of times where this happens, and it turns into a 50-75 long tangent of endlessly bickering back and forth because there are certain people in this community who absolutely must get in the last word whenever someone disagrees with something they said.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

Sounds like in that case, there are two people insisting on getting the last word.

Downvoting isn't the solution to that.

I think the request is to require a comment as to why someone submitted a downvote, as opposed to leaving it as an option.

The reasonable alternative to downvoting is for a person to make a comment about why they disagree with a comment.

I can't believe Vtkey didn't get downvoted here.

I thought it would discourage people from downvoting, and most importantly, eliminate noise. But I guess no one thinks there's any value to this. Carry on!

Thank you for leaving a comment. I had to irrationally down vote your post, because everybody else was doing it. But I will leg this comment to balance it out.

Problem: Nudity

Honestly, the turkey legs do not concern me. If we're looking for a solution to a problem, and I'm not sure there is a problem, I would get rid of the visible comment score completely and rely only on the color changes. The negative could gradually go transparent so that the fat finger -1 would be indistinguishable and the positive votes could gradually shade green until they reach plaid status.

Another solution I would be in favor of, but would never gain traction, would be an automatic -10 for any mention of a leg. I don't need to hear "I legged you". I don't need to hear "this needs to go plaid". I also hate to hear whining about "why was this downvoted?" It doesn't fucking matter (I will accept negative votes for this post).

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

That would be an interesting little experiment. Hide the vote counts for a week and see what happens. Do people vote on more posts? Less Posts? Do people vote at all? Do the vote totals shrink because people don't pile on positively or negatively? Does all hell break loose on TKP? Oooooh the possibilities!

Plan for the worst and hope for the best, not the other way around.

without the color, I don't think anybody votes anymore. If it is visibly different as it gains votes, my guess is it would remain close to the same.

"A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky dangerous animals and you know it." - K

If you really wanted all hell to break loose, Joe should make it to where if you downvote someone, you lose a leg from your overall leg score.

You really have to mean it.

I found TKP after two rails from TOTS then walking back to my apartment and re-watching the 2012 Sugar Bowl. I woke up the next day with this username.

Great idea. Would have the side benefit of eliminating negative voting when someone gets to zero.

But it would have the likely side negative effect of sanctioning negative voting.

Actually, now that I'm thinking about it, if you really wanna watch the world of TKP burn, turn off legging comments unless you're a TKPC member. Or worse yet, put the ability to comment on threads behind a TKPC paywall.

I am a machine of terrible ideas.

Easy solution: upvote when you see something has been downvoted, and:

Voila! - problem solved all around!

I, for one, feel that some people are a little too sensitive about the Downvote here.

The question I would pose is....Does knowing why someone Downvoted you make any measurable difference to you or to them?

I'm sure I have been downvoted many-a-time even though I would consider myself just a moderate-frequency commenter, I would never take the time to bother looking through a list of why each downvote occurred, it honestly would just be more noise and would be more bothersome than anything.

I downvoted this for inconsistent capitalization of "downvote".

Honestly I was thinking about this today. What else do we have to talk about in the program. We don't have the access we used to have. I really don't know who to look for next year. I don't know what to get excited about.
This is the most distant I have felt from the program as a fan and I went to the Belk Bowl just last week.

I guess what I'm trying to say is I wish we had a little more access to the program to know what to start getting excited about.

I made a fuss yesterday over this not because I care about the Internet Points, but because someone(s) going around dropping -1s on comments that don't violate CG willy nilly sort of represents the erosion of decorum on TKP to me.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

One thing I like about the fishing threads. To my knowledge, I've never seen a downvote. Ever. Actually, even upvotes are pretty rare over there and are awarded for good write ups and pictures, not gifs. I know it isn't the original TKP focus, but the lack of leg chasing and hot takes is a mark of the threads.
And speaking only for myself, I have long ago given up caring about downvotes, though I did worry a bit about them early in my TKP postings. But after a few thousand upvotes, the prospect of downvotes doesn't carry much weight if I have something I want to say, even if I know it won't be popular.

This shouldn't be to hard to do. Just a simple complete overhaul of TKP:

  • Each week everyone gets 40 turkey legs - TKP members get 100 per week.
  • It costs 2 TL to post a comment.
  • It costs 5 TL to create a new post.
  • You can give as many of them as you want on any post or comment as a gift to the OP and that total also creates a comment score.
  • You can't downvote, but you can report abuse and a comment gets grayed out if it gets reported by a certain number of people.
  • You can buy extra TLs if you get really into a discussion and need to contribute.

Pros:

  • No more complaining about downvotes.
  • No more wishing you could upvote more (because you can).
  • More interactive because you would have to keep up with your TLs.
  • Cut down on bullshit arguments between two people.*big if true*
  • Maybe TKP gets more revenue from people buying TLs or memberships.
  • Less comments about someone mispelling or, punctualizing wrong;

Cons:

  • FAM threads? better or worse?
  • Significant work on Joe's part.
  • Maybe people hate this as it becomes somewhat of an interactive game/
  • Maybe your favorite part is reading or contributing to a bullshit argument about why
  • Multiple accounts get made in order to funnel TLs to another account <-sad (shame on you)

If Joe does read this, please realize this isn't intended to be me telling you how to change your system that clearly already works very well. I don't expect and of this to be implemented nor am I asking it to be. I'm hoping you don't even read this because I don't want you to take negatively. I'm just curious what others think about a system like this.

The quantity of posts on here would drop drastically and I believe the quality of conversation would as well.

People would start thinking is my comment "leg-worthy" kinda like the whole "sponge-worthy" bit from Seinfeld.

Hopefully some coaching news breaks soon so that we can get away from a thread about downvotes.

The trick is to not care about downvotes. I see way too many of yall make exclamatory posts demanding answers for why they got a single downvote lol. Just chill.

You may not have had anyone downvoting your posts as soon as you made them. It's generally not just one negative vote.

By the time it gets mentioned, they're likely commenting on multiple negative votes.

Like it or not, it's the established currency here. Most of the time, it works pretty well to encourage good citizenship.

Nah, there are definitely posts made complaining about a single downvote lol. And it's always rectified by people anyways.

It's not currency. There is no value other than....stroking ego? I've been on here for many years and I couldn't even guess the number of legs I have because it doesn't matter. Maybe I've just spent too many years on reddit to care about stuff like karma or legs.

If you run into an asshole in the morning, then you met an asshole.
If everyone you run into is an asshole, then you are the asshole.

Just throwing this out there, but if you are catching multiple downvotes on multiple comments, then maybe, just maybe, the community isn't the problem.

From the Community Guidelines page:

"Members can award them to each other by upvoting comments and forum topics. If someone posts a funny picture, witty reply, good statistic, something you like etc..., then upvoted and give them a turkey leg. Conversely, if someone flames, wages a personal attack or doesn't follow the community guidelines, then downvote. Do not downvote for disagreeing with someone's opinion. "

People should only downvote for violations of the Community Guidelines, but there is some area open to interpretation when it comes to the highlighted section. To one person, behavior can be seen as "flaming" or "trolling" while to a different person it can be seen as perfectly fine. Downvotes allow the Community to express disapproval of behavior that they believe makes TKP worse. There is some subjectivity to that.

Also, it is easy to say that someone should just "man up" and explain their downvote. However, what if they have tried to explain a downvote in the past and it just resulted in a multi-comment, multi-day back and forth that did nothing but significantly increased the noise? If explaining to a poster why you downvoted their behavior resulted in them doubling down and completely derailing a thread making it much worse, why would someone repeat this process the next time it happens? Most of us have been here a while, so we know when it will be worth it to explain a downvote and when it will fall on deaf ears and only make the problem worse. This is respecting the signal-to-noise ratio.

So, go back to the first two sentences of this post. Maybe someone chronically gets multiple downvotes, not because people always disagree with them, but maybe because multiple people disagree with how they are affecting the TKP community. It is not right or wrong, it just how people interpret the intentions of the guidelines.

If all else fails, just do what I do. If a particular poster is constantly derailing threads, arguing in bad faith, moving goal posts, talking to everyone like they know everything and everyone else is lucky to hear there opinion, coming back to threads days after they have died just to get the last word in, or if someone just always rubs you the wrong way, don't downvote, just decide to never give them any turkey legs ever again.

TL:DR Just ignore downvotes. Bitching or arguing about them accomplishes nothing but increasing the noise.
