I think time will tell that the main, not only, but main reason more so than anything else, why he couldn't win the "big games" was due to underfunding and possibly a combo of Admin/AD support. A smaller version and a slivered degree of what VT was facing prior to all these changes.
IMO, PSU will find out that if the powers that be met the way VT did, they would have made some tweaks and retained JMMF.
This is a highly plausible outcome to me and if it proves out to a larger degree, it will be glorious to watch VT rise while PSU slides.
Hopefully not like Galen Scott.
The amount of meltdown by Penn State guys on Twitter is glorious. Nit picking every interview he did. They are so afraid he is going to do well here.
The other thing that cracks me up is that several admit they purposely underfunded Franklin but don't want to admit there is a direct correlation between that and regularly losing to the Big 10 schools that spent more money than PSU both in budget and NIL.
The last bit is how many of them seem to truly believe they are one coach away from a national championship.
I already enjoyed cheering against them but would be especially great if they fall flat on their face with the next hire or two. A few years in the cellar might do them some good.
All the sites point to him leaning Minnesota at this point but he hasn't been in front of Franklin yet. Hopefully he can do some convincing this weekend. I do think QB is a much different spot to recruit these days with the portal but still important to get guys in the boat early.
Did I? Hmm...must be a good joke.
I think point #3 is where the Moneyball idea really applies. Which positions do you absolutely have to spend more NIL money on to succeed? Year to year that may be constant for some positions but variable for others based on what players are actually out there in the portal. Like, everyone knows you need good OL and lots of them, but there aren't usually a ton of them available. On the other hand, even though a good QB is vital for success, there are usually quite a few potentially good QBs out there and you really only need one to hit.
Roster construction now involves balancing a budget so you absolutely should have some analytics and statistics people crunching numbers to find the best use of your money.
More motivation for Franklin. I feel like he has a real chip on his shoulder and this only adds to it.
Anyone else notice ESPN doing Franklin dirty on SportsCenter? Showed only highlights of teams scoring touchdowns against Penn St. Somebody in production is a hater 🤣
PSU fans say that Franklin capital-H HATES Maryland and would run up the score on them every chance he gets
I'm hoping we get that chance
Similar sentiment from what I've heard. Knowles seems to be the guy who brings his scheme and then tries to force fit his talent into it, instead of maximizing the efficacy of his guys by designing a system around them.
If he landed that reverse dunk, it would have definitely competed for top play.
Find guys that can be developed up and write an NIL contract that requires them to stay.
The negative aspect of the portal is that it disincentivizes teams to take on high potential projects as once those guys are improved they move to the highest bidder.
IMO there's three ways you can 'outkick your coverage' so to speak:
- Adjust your scheme so you can execute successfully with players that other teams don't want - this is what Foster/Wiles did; they recruited undersized lineman who were 'twitchy.' These guys weren't a take at other programs that were running a more traditional scheme.
- Finding "diamonds in the rough" - this is out-evaluating other teams. IMO this can't be done at scale (there's just too much data out there on recruits these days), at all positions, but you might be able to do this at a select few positions for a recruit or two every year or two.
- You can choose to dump your NIL into a handful of position groups/players that are really difference makers.
My in laws are OSU fans and they don't love Knowles either. Their opinion is that his scheme was too complicated for players to learn and that Matt Patricia was a significant step up.
Not a lot of love for Knowles up here, I think we could pass on him.
I like this.....I think I'm gonna use it.
Leg for you sir!
Didn't watch the game. What's up with Neo? Shots just didn't fall or not being used correctly?
Lawal missed dunk a couple minutes before would've competed for the top play on Sportscenter
The "Sorry I'm tall" foul
Good game after a rough start. Final score was what you'd expect, you wouldn't know they didn't get it going til the end of the first half.
, not the 6-9 guy with a 7-5 wingspan who hasn't learned how to shoot yet and needs to put on 20-30 pounds.
So you're saying we needed Shaq not Roy Brow? /s
Thank you very much, I did not get to watch today.
Fortunately we won by 17
Here is the Bryant one...for Lawal's 1,2,3,4 Dunks go over to the Fam post
