I am a little worried that Chesney might be the next Cignetti

He could also be the next Mike Houston. And given the hit rate on head coaches, that's probably more likely.

Shutdown Fullcast touched on the September part of our schedule next year and basically said, other than VMI week 1 (and maybe JMU depending on how their roster looks if Chesney leaves) it's teams that, if we were to go 3-1 or 4-0, tech would feel pretty good about it.

It includes September Maryland so that should count towards Franklin's big game record if we win that one lol

I've always thought that football is the hardest sport to money ball. baseball was easy because it has the fewest moving parts so you can isolate what works. Basketball got more analytical and you can roughly judge players at different position the sane because they largely do the same things (not exactly). But football is 11 guys all having to work together at the sane tone that isolating what makes a play successful is difficult so it's harder to find players that excel for cheap because grading them is harder. It will be interesting to see how moneyball works in football.

Look at the busts form the NFL draft vs NBA. The largest non-injury bust was Kwame Brown until Anthony Bennett took that spot. Brown played for more than a decade.

So looking back at Michigan rankings, they outranked Penn State in 9 of his 12 years there. As you will see noted below, one of the three seasons (2015) they didnt were tied to quantity of signees more than quality of class. Only five top 10 classes but that's three more than Franklin had.

Michigan:
2026 Currently 11th
2025. 8th
2024. 19th
2023. 20th
2022. 12th
2021. 13th
2020. 13th
2019. 10th
2018. 22nd (20 recruits)
2017. 5th
2016. 7th
2015. 37th (14 recruits, six 4 🌟 )
2014. 20th (17 recruits)
2013. 4th

He's a sure of a thing as you can get on the coaching market

But how do you know Franklin is a sure thing? He is still a gamble. He is the surest thing there is for us, but that's still not a sure thing

Zach & Mike on hot mic (HokieSports app) getting their dates mixed up, then realizing Bryant is one of the two games Frank is set to attend; "we're paying him $8 million & folks paying $20 to see him, I'd hate for him not to stop by" (laughter)

(Edit: just sharing a funny exchange, not any scoop or scandal)

Their basketball team before this season had won 20+ in three of the last four seasons. They got lucky for a couple coaches in a row. Two coaches ago, Jared Grasso was forced to step down after a hit-and-run charge that was eventually dropped but had the Bulldogs 15-7 in Covid, 22-10 the year after and then 17-13 before resigning. He made the NCAA Tournament with that 22-10 season which was first time in school history. Prior to him Bryant only had 3 winning seasons in 10 years.

The assistant coach that took over, Phil Martelli went 20-13 in year one and 23-12 last year, where they made the NCAA Tournament for only second time.

Unfortunately for Bryant, UVA cost them their head coach as he was hired by VCU after UVA hired away Odom. Martelli kind of cleaned them out on his way to VCU.

It's not a great comp. Georgia was clearly underperforming under Richt and he was clearly close to the end of his career. To be fair to him, he was actually pretty good at Miami, in 3 seasons he had a 10, 9, and 7 wins and they made only their second ever ACCCG, something they haven't done since.

Franklin was operating PSU at probably peak or close to peak of what that program can be. We're getting him at his peak, not at the tail end of his career.

100%, that's been my argument since day one. We need the sure thing, not the 6-9 guy with a 7-5 wingspan who hasn't learned how to shoot yet and needs to put on 20-30 pounds.

Sounds like penn state fans have been considering Andy Frank as someone playing moneyball with their roster - which they view as a negative thing and I see that as something we will have to do as well; even with more NIL and funding we are playing catchup with so much less media money.

I am pretty sure they will need to win that game to make to the title game. They are off this weekend. And there will definitely be at least 1 other team with only 1 loss going into the last weekend.

Hindsight is 20/20. Maybe Chesney works out, but the odds are a lot more likely that he won't match what Cignetti has done.

I'd rather have the proven track record of Franklin.

Dangit!

But with our dining program, I'm not exactly wrong...
