Skip the cake, eat the brownies.
It's a "yes" for me too - actually I think for relevance in the national scene, bringing in Franklin hits all the buttons. We'd be back in the conversation quickly.
That said, I haven't seen it mentioned anywhere, but does anyone know if VT could offer Franklin deferred compensation so he cleans up on both ends? Penn State has to cover offset salary in the short-term, and deferred comp allows us to cover a huge payout conveniently at the same time his contract with PSU expires. This accomplishes a few things - allows a smaller upfront investment and gives us some guarantee that he doesn't split in year 2-3.
Side note - Frank Beamer and James Franklin - coincidence or destiny?
For me, Mullen and Huff are the safe picks, and Helton is the gambler's choice. I want a coach hungry to "make his bones" and get a huge contract extension after a successful proof of concept at VT following 2-3 seasons of improvement. Not after just one season using the previous guy's players with one impactful transfer like Whit mistakenly did with Fuente. Franklin's not coming to VT, no way I see that happening, and I don't want another PSU product anyway. I would love to see Helton come and give us an exciting offense.
Here's my issue with Shane. Could he be good? Potentially, I think he would certainly do things differently than the old guard mentality.
But could VT do better? I think so. Realistically, we are only seriously considering Beamer because of his last name. I get he had a couple good years at South Carolina. But that program is screwed in the new non-divisional SEC (look at this years schedule). I really think the big rub with Shane is he comes off as arrogant and entitled, and let's face it - I think he largely got the jobs he did in his career because of his dad. The silver spoon mentality if you will.
Is he really any good? He's struggled hiring good OCs there (does that remind you of anyone?) It shouldn't be too terribly hard to recruit the mid Atlantic as an SEC program when NC and VA are not (yet) in the SEC footprint.
I just feel like we are getting excited about Beamer nostalgia and an SEC HC that had a ton of help and media/industry hype to help get him where he is thanks to his last name. Could he do ok at VT? Again he could. But should we cast a wider net and work in VT's best interest first? Absolutely.
Personally, I want this program to land a big hire and prove that VT can live without the Beamers.
I agree. I don't really have strong feelings either way on Shane, but I do think it's funny how many of us think VT is too good to even consider a sitting SEC head coach.
ACC ought to suspend their entire officiating department
For sure. And part of my thought process. It's hard to watch a game in any sport anymore and have the thought of sportsbook gambling fixing in the head.
Yup. If we ever do hire shane it has to be after he has proved himself to be a good coach, which I think the jury is still out on that and after Frank has passed.
Its a good point.
I don't think that Shane's resume necessarily makes him a bad candidate (though I'd argue he isn't a great one), and I also think his history with the program and connections within the Athletic Department would ultimately be a net negative for an organization that needs a complete overhaul.
The old guard at VT needs to go, and we need to stop operating like its 1999. That requires someone who would be willing to clean house, and I doubt Shane would do so.
Congrats! I was 10 years old playing Cruisin' USA on the N64, and tossing a football around a pool with my best friend and our brothers at a hotel in Merrillville Indiana. I was a bit crushed when my dad came to take us home and told me the final score. Great day overall though. Your day might've been better.
122.6 ypg/a
But that includes 178 against Duke
120 against Carolina
178 against BC
135 against San Diego State
and 130 against Minnesota
So take away 1-7 Oregon State and Texas Southern, and they're giving up 149 a game, which is just a tad worse than us.
Imagine our RBs running against our D
I would totally be down with Drones slinging it all over the field like Bryan Randall did. Hopefully our secondary doesn't make their quarterback look like Aaron freaking Rogers.
I know lots of people keep suggesting we wouldn't consider Shane if he wasn't a Beamer, but honestly I don't think he would consider VT either if he wasn't a Beamer.
I'm not ruling out Shane coaching here ever.
But honestly, right now I think he'd be about my 4th or 5th choice.
He could be right in the future. But now is the wrong time.
Have to ask, was this intentional or is it just a well-placed typo? Either way it is good and I got a good chuckle out of it:
"Notre Damn viewership is kinda irrelevant."
Crazy enough we opened as a 2.5 point favorite and it has grown to 6.5 points. Stewart is reportedly healthy and the Cal defense against the run is apparently bad.
And it has been since 21 since we last played them. So much for once every three years.
Man Hears Bee works better.
The Calgorithm cannot fuck with Lane we don't have functional WiFi. Go Hokies!
Until we are good Thursday and Friday night games are probably our only shot at good TV ratings just by getting the random football fans.
Abide
and Thursday nights are for college ball, dammit
I was today years old when I learned this game was today. Jeez, I don't think I've ever been so checked out on a Hokie football team. Much as I would love to avenge the 2003 Insight Bowl, I just hope the points streak stays intact

How many P4 teans hire away a P4 coach with a winning record?
I agree hiring him means a lot of issues at VT that aren't issues with Shane. But the implicatiosn of where are AD is are big.
We can do a lot worse than an SEC coach with a winning record.
