I've been saying this since Vandy. Drones Stewart and Hawk all in the backfield at once. We still have talented enough receivers and Drones arm has to at least be half respected. At the very least we'll burn more clock and the defense will be fresh and my misery will be shortened.
Slight correction. Rhett Lashlee is SMU's coach
Hokies!!
I wouldn't hate a Dan Mullen hire. Thanks for the breakdown
This is freaking huge if they end up here. Holy shit. This immediately brings in at least one national contender when they step on campus.
I think choosing sec/big 10 over acc isn't the strong argument most people think it is. For the next few years acc champion and maybe acc #2 is going to be an easy path to the playoffs and once in the playoffs, anything can happen. Outside of the top 3 in sec/big 10, you have to basically get comfortable that you're not going to the playoffs.
After those years, the entire landscape could be different. If the coach does well, then vt will likely be in that next wave of pickups into the p2. If vt doesn't get picked up, the coach will have the experience of working in the modern system with a gm and all that and will probably have offers from teams that do get picked up into p2.
Now that VT has upped the budget, a coach coming here vs a mid or low sec/big 10 team is likely a much better a opportunity.
W hire tbh
remember when Mac Brown had a crazy high ranked class at UT that produced no draft choices?
Mullen's 12th ranked 2018 class produced only one defensive starter. He had 60% of one class transfer and 70% of another transfer.
The pro on Mullen is offense. Everything else is questionable at best. As of 10/5, UNLV SP+ for defense is 29.2 (102)
Dan Mullen is my top choice among candidates I think are realistic. I've wanted Dan Mullen since our last coaching search, I think VT could be perfect for him.
Yeah, but that's Monty's thing:
- Let the quarterback read half the field
- Go fast
- Use the passing game to spread the defense horizontally so you can easily bruise them up the middle
15 years ago, you could run the system and beat good teams with lesser talent because it was so unique. That is no longer the case.
Even saw this in his time as a head coach at Tulsa where he had a pretty solid first couple years and then really leveled off
Also to give him some benefit of the doubt, he didn't get hired until later in the off-season, so maybe in installation was a little challenging.
Regardless, we have personal issues at the coaching and player level. Monty was never going to fix this as interim.
lol one can dream
Never thought of it that way, but you're totally right.
3.5 mil at a G5 should tell you how bad VT pay has been. Why move to the ACC for 500k when you can have a way less stressful work environment.
How do you not pass to TE's when they have been some of our best receivers the past few years??? I was wondering where the passes to Gosnell had gone.
Where's the +1000 legs button???
I'm of the belief we should just run the triple option the rest of the season.
I totally read the post title as "The Announcement for" lol
Also, IMO Drones is the number one issue holding back our offense. But now having seen Monty's scheme for a half a season, it looks like something that would have been good 10-15 years ago, but just lacks creativity and is pretty bland. Especially in the run game. TE's also rarely get used in the pass game. And he's overall too pass happy with a QB that really can't throw very well. Not very good.
From the stands, it appeared there were at least three instances where Wake clearly hit early and should have been pass interference with no call. Were the stands right and our refs needed glasses.
There were 4 by my count and two happened basically right in front of us where we were sitting. Both were missed by the same field judge as it happened right in front of him. The first one he wasn't even watching, he was fiddling with something on his wrist and after the play was over one of our coaches came over and said something to him. The whole time he was looking at his arm/wrist.
edit: fixed "autocorrect" errors
And Ashford was god awful. Thank the Lord he can't throw worth a shit. Thank the Lord.
I basically picked opposite of what I thought and still went 1-5.
This is not my year.
Agree.
The second was should have been called in the first place. Even when it wasn't should have been reviewed. Yes he missed the hit hth. But you clearly see him lowering his head with the intent to hit hth. Just because he missed (because the other tackled pulled him slightly away) doesn't make it a penalty.
Was there a single review yesterday? I remember think it late in the game but didn't go back to check.
The Stewart injury should have been reviewed for targeting/late hit. His injury was a direct result of crown of helmet hit defender dove head first after Stewart was tackled. I am worried Stewart may have a broken collarbone as that what he was grabbing at on the sidelines after
There were a few times when Wake should have been called for PI, they were hitting the receivers before the ball got there.
For the targeting call, there was one replay angle that appeared to show the defender's helmet hit the chest/shoulder area and his shoulder pad hit the helmet of our receiver. It should have been reviewed so that we could see it in slow motion to know what happened.
Stewart injured his shoulder and was held out of the rest of the game.

lol I'll blame that on autocorrect. Thanks for correcting!
