This is where I'm at as well, except I think the title should be Associated AD of Football instead of GM. Just because a college GM is nothing like an NFL GM lol.
What would give you a better chance at a conf championship and a favorable playoff seed, going through Oh St, Mich, and Penn St or FSU, Clemson, and Miami? Also, Indiana is not exactly fertile recruiting grounds and the school is basketball first.
Cignetti is not leaving a P2 program (with a upward trajectory and realistic expectations) for an ACC program (with a downward trajectory, an impatient fan base and most likely a pay cut).
Michael Vick would be a categorically awful hire. I'm with French - I'm out on the program if we go down that route.
Based on what I am seeing I think Whit will announce his resignation effective 3-4 months from now. Sands and the BOV will line up a New AD and let a committee hire the next football coach while Whit holds down the fort in a lame duck role.

Promise this is the last of this from me. Today, got my boat off my one legged trailer and onto my new old trailer. New trailer has no springs, so that's cool. The guy who got my trailer rigged to get to the boat ramp is a mechanical wizard. He took the wheel home and welded a steel piece to the spindle, then here he cut off the axle, sleeved it with steel, then sleeved that steel with another insert to create a stable running axle for the two mile trip to the ramp. Really cool watching a true mechanic suss it all out, and in the end, I got the last trailer I'll need and the boat off a bad trailer for $700.
All the troubles in the world with a trailer, but still haven't had a bearing go bad. Like I've said before, now I can get out on the water again and not catch anything like everybody else this year.

# | Pry Fallout - Prepare to get Portaled hard in the next couple weeks My high school always did our band camp at E&H. The cafeteria always had really good food. Lots of core memories made on that beautiful campus.
Brock Hoffman came in to replace Cowboys Starting center Cooper Beebe who was injured at the start of overtime yesterday. Beebe expected to be put on IR for a minimum of 4 weeks with a high ankle sprain. Looks like Hoffman will be the starting center for a while.
I'd be much more concerned about kids just sitting out than actively transferring now. Very few teams have the time now to adequately evaluate whether all our players are trash or they just got coached to play like trash, so it's unlikely even a verbal deal for next year gets negotiated in the next 30 days.
Now that you put it in these terms -
The athletic director position has always been like the one go-to person in the department that leads the entire thing, no? And the skills of the AD have been the direction of the program in general - so if we have a financially-minded AD then you might be able to say our primary focus is on fundraising/revenue generation.
And now I have been thinking that we need - like you said - an AD focused on managing and making money, and have a sport-focused GM.
But after reading your comment it made me think a little. I think the Athletic Director should probably have a Director of Sports (aka GM of sports) and maybe a CFO of Sports under them so they don't have to focus specifically on financial health and could instead delegate that to an (important) person who specializes in that.
Now a single financially-minded AD and/or a CFO of Athletics will still probably be facing strong headwinds if, say, your television contract and your apparel deal are both shit but hey gotta start somewhere.
It's painfully obvious Pry was all bark and no bite at this point. Each year he told us the roster was better than before in the offseason, going so far as to say this past offseason that this was the deepest most complete roster he has had at VT. Then the bottom just fell out. I think the plan with Pry was just to say good stuff/have good vibes and hope and pray it somehow worked out.
I googled the press releases for half a dozen of the firings from last year. ALL of them were from the AD.

I will say, he made a comment in the last presser that seemed to kinda throw players under the bus a bit: "roster isnt just where we need it to be" or something like that. Like, ok, if thats the case, why such the hype beforehand? I *really* want to know what the players only meeting was about.

I saw a replay of the hit and it really didn't look like much. Just the wrong hit at the wrong time for Sellers.
I'm not a great evaluator of football talent but it seems like everytime I saw Terion Stewart run the ball I was like THIS GUY IS THE FUTURE
... and now I'm looking him up and apparently he's a grad student in his 5th year of eligibility. No wonder he isn't on your list.
Whit may not have managed it well, but I believe he has a pretty good grip on the current CFB landscape, as well as lots of connections in the AD world. At least way more than anyone else at VT.
The BOV may recognize that his insights will be valuable as they develop the plan for the future and Whit may be willing to serve in a "consultant" role knowing he won't ultimately be implementing the plan.
If he is truly looking to retire over making a move elsewhere, helping craft the plan that (hopefully) sets VT up for success as his last act let's him create a positive legacy.
