My wife went to UK and their fanbase seems to have run out of patience with Stoops. As a somewhat neutral observer, I see a coach that is falling victim to standards that he raised. UK was pretty bad before he got there and he really raised their profile. I think they may not appreciate him until he's gone.

I never know quite what to think of Chris Coleman... like, he seems like he's just a guy who taught himself ball and gossips with locals and TSL folks. But he's not a reporter... He's basically a blogger? So how serious do I take his comments? Idk.

Oh how I've felt your pain. That stretch was a long day for me, with a fair amount of dead water, but if the wind turns against you, you need a motor. I got caught that way once in a canoe. I had a little Tanaka motor, but didn't take extra gas. We ran out there that last bend above White Thorn and it took us an hour an a half to paddle out from there. Even the stout and strong as a bull Chuck Kraft couldn't battle the headwind in his Maravia raft one day. He'd have to pull into shore and rest up. The one time we took the time to switch, we lost 50 yards. Brutal. I also had my troubles, but the arsenal float was always my least favorite run on the New. Yeah, some nice fish there, and once you're through the arsenal falls you don't have to fish around others until you get to the last couple of miles the White Thorn bass boats hammer constantly. Met Sergio Render there at the take out one day, by the way. Big fisherman.
Think I'd have to put Baylor as mixed and not TBD. Aranda is in his 6th year there, so probably enough time to get a good feel. Had 2 bad years. 1 was his first and teams often struggle learning a new system, plus it was the COVID year, so a struggle is not a shock. 1 great year at 12-2 with the Sugar Bowl win back when bowl games still mattered to most players. And 2 mediocre seasons of 6-7 and 8-5.
Overall record 32-31, which I'd think would be a big enough sample to call it mixed.

Honestly, I would love to see a HC that is only getting 3 million with multiple incentives that they can reach for more money. Pry getting almost 6 million a year for crap hurts.

Will Stein is certainly risky... Only has 5 years of FBS coaching experience, but I'm a big fan of what he did at UTSA (shows he can 'coach em up' and get results with mid players). I also like Oregon's offense (shows he can win with great players).
If we hire him (or someone like him), he's presumably getting a contract with a low floor, and we're investing heavily in coordinators around him.
If we announced this hire, it would definitely feel like a bridge coach who could keep us afloat while we fundraise more.
Edit: that said, if we're going for a 'bridge coach' I'd want a bit of a safer bet.

Had a day with a straight upstream wind, didn't matter which way the river turned the wind just turned with it. I put in at Peppers Ferry did my normal push out off the bank and get the raft organized, normal saftey/fishing brief next thing I knew I was going up the rapid above the landing. I had to row every minute of that trip and double time once we got to the slow water above White Thorn. Its one of the shortest distance floats I did and took me nearly all day to get there.
Going the coordinator angle seems risky. We did that with Pry and it didn't really work out well.
Going through P4 conferences, the coordinator-straight-to-HC route has:
- Worked well for UGA, Oregon, Ohio State, South Carolina, SMU.
- Had mixed results at Pittsburgh, Kentucky, Vandy, Maryland, Baylor
- Failed at Virginia Tech, UVA
- TBD at Mississippi state, Arizona State, Northwestern, Michigan,
Baylor
You look at the schools where the coach has had unanimous success - and at 3 out of 5, it's a school that has been a historic recruiting power. SMU has leaned into the NIL era. SCar is an exception in many ways (one of which is that Shane was a special teams coordinator before accepting the job).
Talking through this... it's really clear that VT needs a visionary at AD (who can work on funding, and understands how to get that funding to football) and a coach-em-up guy at HC.
It also strikes me that a downfall of our last two HCs (I'm assuming Pry is fired this year... ) was staffing. Pry threw together a rookie staff to start. Fuente held on to Corny too long/made a bad hire in JHam. Also interesting that both coaches took a rookie coordinator + experienced skill position coach approach to one side of the ball. Failed in both cases.

I'd probably watch the game on Saturday anyway, but they put it on a streaming channel that I don't get, and no way am I paying to watch VT play Wofford online.
Static, unchanging, consistent, a given. Whereas now, we are keeping the first two parts of that and wondering why it isn't translating into the third.
One could argue that it has translated into the third. We've been consistently bad to mediocre for at least 10 years. Certainly, consistently frustrating to watch!
First VT football game I remember was my rat year in the Highty Tighties. While we marched at every home game halftime, I don't recall them specifically until that year's Thanksgiving game against VMI when we rode the train from Christiansburg to Victory Stadium. Don't remember who won, just remember hazily the day. I was a fan through Sharpe, Dooley and for Frank's whole tenure. I remember the 2-8-1 season, I was there. I went to games by myself because my crowd didn't go to the games often. Then came the good years, season tickets, tailgates and lots of friends, started the bowl streak and scored Michael Vick and on 'till whatever we have now. I'm bummed. Normally, I'd be doing about everything I could to be able to watch even the Wofford game. I'm not going to bother. I will watch games I don't have to convolute to watch, but I've never been at this point in my fandom before and I don't care for it one damn bit.
It looks like his is finally turning on Whit, which he has never done. Seems that indicates that he's not afraid of burning that bridge anymore. If that podcast is coming out, someone higher up gave the go ahead to drop it. Plus, mehul said he will be there this weekend and he is a LARGE donor.
