I'm so with you.
The last time I can remember drinking because I was really happy watching a VT game: Think it was the 2020 win vs. Virginia. Remember Dax jumping around crazy on the sideline with some long score right before halftime.
The last time I was really angry with VT losing: The bowl loss against Kentucky in 2019. Though I am glad that I no longer get that bent out of shape over a game.
Bare minimum: improved O-line play... Too many drives stalled or 3-and-outs due to Drones not having enough time to let the play develop or have time to throw it.
I don't really have any high expectations for defense tbh. I expect very similar to what we saw last year, so I am hoping offense can help mask those deficiencies with more points on the board
Also... Time management HAS to be better but that isn't saying much.
Okay but if I go to that link and select Athletics -> Scholarship Fund is it the same as this scholarship fund
Edit: In doing these searches I finally found the "pledge per" link again which I've been looking for.
I would like to lose games because our players just aren't as good as their players.
That was all of 2022 and it sucked.
It's preseason SP+, which takes into account quality of returning production, new production (recruits/transfers), and weighted historical performance.
I really don't know. It's terribly unfortunate for Pry, and the entire fanbase, that the they couldn't make something happen last year with a solid roster. Now, forced to rebuild, having two new coordinators... I just don't see a path for more than 5. Pry should have gotten the job done last year. Better game management would have given us two more wins. Slightly better defensive preparedness would have gotten us another one or two.
In any event, I don't see more than 5 wins on the schedule.
And the schedule will be harder.
I know I want to see 8 wins minimum to feel better about where the program is going. I'm not sure we'll get there, even with a deeper roster (which I think is debatable), improved coordinating, and improved conditioning.
It's pretty common that boosters pay for coaching buyouts on an as-needed basis.
Go to https://giving.adv.vt.edu/gift - I think it's pretty self explanatory what departments you are/can donate to. I think it's less clear how that money is used.
Donating to Triumph (NIL Collective) is (intentionally) separate from the university (for NCAA reasons). Their website is a bit less intuitive IMO.
Man I miss drinking because I'm happy during VT games....
I will say this streak of shit has caused me to be much more apathetic towards losses. It used to ruin me for days on end if we lost. Now it's almost expected. With that said. 12-0 BABY!!!! NATTY DARK HORSE.
It's not a bad place to be in. DC can deliver some epic rants by the fireside. Hilarious to watch. Just ask him about "point differentials" or "Pitt QB play against Tech" or even (recently) "Ride your ride".
...and scratched out some weak wins.
Maybe because they were able to scratch out wins, while we were 0-fer in close games.
This is where I'm at. If we had won half the one-score losses last year, we finish 8-4 or 9-3 and this year's conversation is so much different. And it was the little things that caused most of those games to be losses.
I believe that better coaching, better scheme, and better conditioning will fix those little things and put us in a better position to come out winners in close contests.
I'm having a hard time with what our record will be due to all of the unknowns, but I think we'll have a good feel after the first two weeks. That said, losing the first two, then going 6-4 is probably my minimum. But I believe we win at least one of the first two which sets up a better team mindset to to go 7-3 in the rest to finish 8-4.
And I'm putting my money where my mouth is, as I just booked a last minute trip to Atlanta this weekend for the game. Hoping to be feeling good as I continue on the way to Blacksburg for the Vandy game.

The bare necessities to quote Baloo are:
- I walk out of the the room less than 5 times because our coaches/players have made some bonehead mistake
- I drink more out of celebration than frustration
- We beat UVA & go to a bowl game
Is this last year's SP+ or conjecture for this year's start?
You also forgot losing games to the conference who wants their darling team/Heisman candidate to go undefeated and make the playoffs.
100% this. In today's CFB, it's tough to know with all the transfers and such. We could strike lightning and have some new faces, along with returning faces, and a surprise or two from players who have developed since they arrived at VT. Or we could be a rag-tag bunch with terrible coaching that continues to underperform.
I feel like I'm a decently smart person and I still get way confused on the donations. I'd love for someone to make a donations for dummies chart that splits: Academic Donation channels and Athletic Donation channels...then further explains all of the different HC donations, the NIL collective donations their benefits to the donor and athletic department and their relation or lack of relation to each other.
IMO there's no 'easy button' for donations other than when they do the "donate $x for this kinda fun item" which seems like a big miss.
I wish I could get paid for name rank and serial # a few decades ago.
I remember something from a few years ago about Calipari's salary at Kentucky. While it's reported he would earn something like over $7mil, only $400k of that came from actual state funds. The rest was covered by the K Fund, the school's athletic supporter fund, not the university; thus not tied to state funding. (Some came from Nike as well, but that's still not state funded.)
This differs greatly from how Virginia and other states have been set up to function and how the public universities have paid their coaches.
Case in point, Maryland wanted to get rid of Fridgeon several years ago. The governor told the AD they wouldn't pay for a coach that wasn't coaches (talking about the buyout clause...) Thus, he stayed on.
i wouldn't have said this 20 years ago but it's a driving issue, not a football issue. let the driving people do whatever it is they do to drivers who do this
aside...I was telling Mrs. D last night Napier probably has to make the playoffs given how much UF is paying to keep Lagway. her response..."is that the money for name, rank, and serial number?"
It's not just in those states - this summer, FSU lobbied to get a Florida law changed:
Florida State will be able to fully fund more than $20 million in revenue sharing with athletes each year, thanks to an amendment passed by the Florida Board of Governors on Wednesday.
As a result of the amendment, which was pushed by FSU Board of Trustees Chair Peter Collins and others, public universities in the state will temporarily be able to use up to $22.5 million in "auxiliary" funds each year to share money with athletes in football, men's basketball and other sports.
Auxiliary funds, which come from areas such as housing, bookstores and parking fees, previously were forbidden from use in athletics in an effort to keep state sports programs self-sufficient. But FSU and other schools asked for a three-year reprieve while dealing with the financial strain of diverting tens of millions of dollars to athletes.
Much better than half the student body leaving by halftime...
The minimum bar to clear every season is make a bowl game and beat uva. These are incredibly low in this day and age. Uva sucks and 5 win teams have played in bowls. That is the floor.

Stop losing to Duke, Pitt, Syracuse, ODU, Vandy, and teams of their ilk. Upsets happen from time to time, sure. If we want to be anywhere close to what we were or sniff the success Clemson rode for better than a decade, we need to stop losing to these teams.
