A black weight with nicks on it doesn't look as cool as a maroon and orange weight, right? Thats so fucking important. Which team has the coolest looking weights- never mind that Whit was 100% fucking right that they weigh the same. We should have leaned INTO that - you know be tough again. Win in the trenches again with kids that don't give a fuck what the weights look like. Fuente should have made that a recruiting advantage. Come here kick the guys ass across from you and don't be a pussy worrying about the color of the weights- just fucking lift them so you don't get your ass beat.
I'd rather have Snitker, or even a bed-ridden Bobby Cox, coach our football team than Gruden.

# | Whit: "If VT doesn't radically leap forward now, our fate is likely sealed for generations to come" But even then, as you get closer to the top, the revenue streams start to hit an exponential growth as well, with regional advertising flipping to national advertising and merchandise sales skyrocketing.
Of course there is always a balance to be had. The highest spenders don't always win it all. But the bigger spenders tend to be the bigger draws, which does end up with them having the bigger revenue streams. You have to find the balance, and it might not be at that elbow, it could be above it, and I'm sure there are some really smart people in Pamplin who might be able to help determine where that is.

To me, that means performing to the maximum potential of our current football budget. We are currently a top 25% ACC football budget school. If this staff had us maxing out in that 8-9 win range - if we were taking care of the games we should, flashing great promise and potential, but just couldn't get past the Clemsons and FSUs with more talent and resources - that's the point where I think this ask of donors and the BOV to step in with more money really would resonate. But when you're figuratively tripping over your own dick for years, it makes the sales pitch pretty rough.

If it would've been $25,000 to purchase new weights for all the new weight machines, and the old weights fit the new machines, then why not spend that $25,000 elsewhere? And even if they didn't use that money elsewhere in the renovation, that's still $25,000 saved, which is not chump change. It still would've been spent in some other way to benefit the department.

Wherever that performance level that causes the inflection point where the cost starts to rise more dramatically, that's what we should probably be targeting.
UNLV is a tough job- poor on campus facilities, basketball school in a transient town. With each passing day of betting apps on your phone and casino's off of every highway exit the appeal of "vegas" in general is waning, and has never been huge among college students anyway. They want cheap beer and no cover parties, not resort beer and 3 hour waits for 1500 table service. If Mullen wins at UNLV, he is a really good coach. I think he is a good- not great- football coach. much like Rich Rod... they capitalized on a spread offense and coaching kids with a chip on their shoulder and now everyone runs the spread and you know your pecking order in terms of conferences. Rich Rod won't be contending for Nattys this time around at WVU- trust that. I do think Mullen is better than the current Florida coach though.
I think Dan Mullen really fits well at places that aren't bluebloods, but have to ability to punch up. He thrived at Mississippi St coaching up players, scheming around deficiencies, and preaching "they don't believe in us". He didn't do well at Florida because he had to be a recruiter and program manager first.
I think he could fit at VT really well provided he brings in a good GM/director of player personnel who can shoulder more of the recruiting burden. Let's see how he does at UNLV though. If they bottom out, then maybe the game has passed him by.

Agreed- he would be a disaster in college. His super power is not backing down from star players and coaching them hard/challenging them. Yes, he knows what he is doing on offense- great play caller- but college coach? hard no.
If you are a good player pull hooking irons, weaken your grip. If you are a 22 HCP, it's probably coming over the top.
Still think Dan Mullen would have been a great hire for us in 2015 and again 2021. The coaching carousel reporting and rumor mill indicated he was extremely interested in the job both times. Really disappointing.
Just think we went with the comfort hire with Pry based on Ballein's lobbying. That dynamic is probably as much a reason we are where we are as a program along with the money. Andy Bitter pointed out in the TSL pod the other day, although our total AD budget is 14th in the ACC and lowest of all public's, we still spend in the top quarter of the conference for football (obviously Clemson and FSU far away from everyone else). But his point was, that $20MM gap between us and the top two wasn't going to solve our coaching blunders and letting Rutgers run the same play over and over to beat us. So many of our issues are self-inflicted IMO.

Here's a list of coaches off the top of my head that I'd rather have than Jon Gruden: Jon Sumrall, Dan Mullen, Ken Niumatalolo, Glenn Schumann, Andy Kotelnicki, Charles Kelly, Bob Chesney... I'm sure I could think of way more given 5 more minutes.
Point is, Grudan is washed up and completely ill-equipped to coach college ball. He's not Deion (who - despite being an asshole - might actually be a decent college coach).
Ignoring personal issues... he's just not that great of a coach. Would be an incredibly underwhelming for almost any P4 program.
