seriously. absolutely braindead and asinine to think that the fan engagement around the program right now hasn't dropped off in the last 15-20 years from where it was and not to think that consistently mediocre teams hasn't caused that, and that having a consistently actually-bad team wouldn't knock it back even more. how many comments of "just win" have we made around here for years

People forget that VT was legitimately a national brand for the early part of the 2000s. We may try to downplay it, but those Vick years absolutely vaulted us to the top of mainstream sports for a short period, and we completely squandered the opportunity to capitalize on it.

Because people had hope and wanted to dream. But in 2005, the entire season was sold out before it started by season ticket holders for the most part. We weren't selling tickets week to week.
Fan engagement started slipping in the late Frank years, rallied a bit when we went to the ACCCG under Fuente, slipped when he slipped, and rallied last year when we had a lot of talented underclassmen and a lot of talented vets all returning (some when we didnt expect them to) with a reason to belief the team could collectively take a step forward. It didn't happen.
Better metric for demand as a proxy for engagement is the get-in price of home games (a sliding scale) rather than whether it was a sell out or not (binary)

Edit - FTR I do not disagree that engagement is down across the board (both this message board and in general) - just wondering what point you are aiming to make? That player movement buoyed our profile and boosted ticket sales last year?

If anyone thinks fan engagement around VT is the same in 2025 that it was in e.g. 2005 then their head is in the sand

I think you are kind of making his point for him. We have literally sucked bad enough to get beat by ODU recently. And still (mostly) fill Lane while its happening. The fans are there for the university much more than they are the players (aside from random, mostly one-offs here and there), hence if you trade rosters, product on the field stays about the same and fan engagement does too. I think that's DC's general point about throwing as much money as possible to get the absolute best players/coaches etc. is that there is no incentive to do otherwise. Hell, cheat as much as you want, everyone gets away with it anyways. Why? Cause it wins football games. And that's the most important thing.
ODU does suck. And we should cake walk them. We just don't have the horses for that, as much as it pains me to put that in to words. But we are getting what we pay for apparently.
