When I tried out back in '01 they did a cone drill and also a timed 40. I thought I had a decent chance but just didn't have the speed. I was also wearing running shoes because I had to reschedule my tryout around a test and they told me it was moved indoors. It was not.
In hindsight it was one of the best things I did as a young man. I always wanted to play football at the next level but never wanted to ask myself what if somewhere down the road. Being told no is not always a bad thing and let me move on to the next stage in life. Got to shake some coaches' hands and bump chests with some players before a practice before leaving it all behind. Life my man. Life.

I covered the whole process for my senior project at VTTV. Also had 2 friends that actually tried out. Funny enough our guy Ballein ran the whole process until a position coach told Beamer the guy should be considered. Gentry and Ballein were pretty brutal with these kids- they didn't waste much time- if you looked big and were basically a freshman, they considered you. Also keep in mind, they "recruited" walks ons back then too- it just wasn't publicized. This was also the height of holding roster spots for FUMA and Hargrave guys. So this particular round, I think there were 15 or so guys in rector and 3 of them made it to the next phase- which was shell pads with some football drills with real coaches- Hite, Foster, etc. If they liked what they saw, you got recommended to the head whistle.

I hear you. My delusions weren't exactly that far fetched. I'm 6'3" and at the time I wrote them was 235lbs of muscle. I'm also not saying I would have made it by any means. But I would like to think I had a better than average chance of at least making the practice squad. And for someone who's been a lifelong Hokie fan, that would've been more than enough for me. Life happened long before it went any farther than the letter anyway.

I had a friend that was followed around campus at least once a month by the football and basketball coaches while getting his chemical engineering degree. They always asked him are you sure you don't want to play basketball/football at the college level. He was also 6'8" and 300 lbs of muscle. Yea, thanks, we are excited! I have a company ezpass so I'm good to go lol we looked at a house out that way near the intersection of Gayton and Pump Rd, but it wasn't going to work for us. Beautiful house and neighborhood, but not a good setup for a 14-month old baby.

VT (it may have changed) but they would ask potential walk on's 2 questions- 1. How much eligibility do you have left, and 2. Let me see you run this cone drill without a football. That was it. If you said I have one year left (hilarious to think about now) you were told thanks but no thanks- before you even stretched. If you had 3 or more years left and looked similar to barry sanders in the cone drill, then you moved onto the actual tryouts with the position coaches. The cut before the 2 questions was strictly based on size... you had to be very close to 6 ft or taller and 200lbs to even make it to the 2 questions phase.
