This is where I am. We are at the point where I think the best thing for VT as a school might be to pull the plug on athletic funding and reinvest everything academically, and if that means eventually tearing down Lane to make it work, so be it.
It is really discouraging. Watching Mehul try to prop us up with some pretty generous donations and support and you look around and he's pretty much in a league of his own as far as VT grads (at least that I'm remotely aware of)
The only way for VT to not be a mediocre program in a mediocre conference is for something to shake up the current falling apart CFB landscape. Not sure this will have an effect, but it's got more chance than waiting for #GOACC to make it happen from the top.

Can Virginia Tech ever compete at the highest level of football or basketball again?
The short answer is no, not really. Football in particular is going to be hopeless. One of my nieces is a sophomore at Alabama and over Thanksgiving I was telling her about the time that Virginia Tech rolled them in the Music City Bowl. That kind of thing isn't going to happen anymore.
There's simply too much of a money difference now, and the sport as constituted has no competitive framework that could provide some measure of real parity. We are all competing in go-karts but if you have access to a Top Fuel dragster you can run the race in that if you want.
At a certain point I think it all blows up and the top 12 brands in each of the P2 go and make their own NFL Junior and the rest of us go back to playing actual college sports again.
Basketball has more of a path to parity given the smaller teams and the greater impact of truly standout players, so there's more hope there.

I love VT. I love the fact that when I travel with my VT hat to a foreign country or anywhere in the US, I'll have another hokie approach me almost every time. There's a level of camaraderie that my UVA family members just don't see or get.
I'll cheer on a hokie win, and always wish our athletic (and academic) teams the best of luck in all their games and future endeavors.
I'm at peace with the status quo. I don't clear my schedule to watch games (but if its on, I'll switch to it). I don't make athletic donations anymore. I don't travel to bowl games. For me...its over. The magic of a Bryan Randall coming in for a suspended Marcus Vick and winning the ACC in year 1 is gone. The Tyrod acrobatics are gone. The upset at the shoe will never happen again. But I have the memories, and that will have to be enough.
Be most excellent to your fellow hokies, and give this new abomination of sports the attention it deserves....absolutely none...
At this point Pry is every bit as bad as losing quality in the portal as Fuente was. Which isn't fucking great given that was supposed to be his big selling point when bringing him in.

I'm basically in the same boat. The fate of VT was sealed when we got locked into a dead league. The ACC is the anchor that will undo VT, ultimately.
I just don't see a path forward for VT to be successful. Not with the arms race that is going on right now. We're just simply outgunned.

His plan is to rebuild UNC into a modern feeder program to the NFL. He is going to immediately get the recruits to have success right away but UNC is giving him free reign to build what is necessary to be a powerhouse football program. It's every bit as ominous as it was when Saban was hired to Bama, except the sport has changed enough now that Belichick won't have to be nearly as intimately involved with the day to day as Saban was then.

UNC is going to have to learn to spend that money on football, and maybe they will now, but their NIL at present is reported to be on the order of $4M which is likely not that different from VT.
If UNC invests the resources then this model could be very effective for them. BB has apparently asked for a parallel GM and talent structure to do all the traditional talent scouting and recruiting management stuff that coaches have to split time on now. Sounds like he'd just list the things he wants and then focus on the game planning and schemes. That takes care of his biggest downside in having zero college experience. He's outsourced all that, or at least that's the plan.
Coaching and game management wise he's going to bury the ACC, us included.
Dunno. I feel pretty meh on this. Seems more like a publicity stunt to me. The last of his Pats team were bad bad personel wise. Can he coach an entire team of college kids?
UNC may have deep pockets but they haven't come close to figuring out NIL, Mack even said multiple times they don't have money to keep up.
The rest stands true. Fortunately he's 72 and we'll never really know if this strategy works or not he'll get an immediate influx of talent that will never actually make much fruition before he actually retires and 99% of people don't know his son's first name so I doubt he gets half the draw or leniency that Bill will.

All Belichick has to do to win in the ACC is do what he does best... Take away what your offense does best/is most comfortable with. He is the best to ever do that. So if they play WVU, Rich Rods bullshit sideways runs will be just that- sideways and snuffed for loss. If he played GT with Paul Johnson, he would have forced Johnson to pass more than 6 times in the game. He will force NC State to do what they hate/can't do etc. He will beat VT every time he coaches against us, I am certain of it. We are the most predictable offensive team in CFB. If he were coaching in the SEC its not so cut and dry... but SMU just came in and went undefeated in this league. Bellichick will win and win big.
Man that's a lot of experience hopping into the portal. This *gestures broadly* makes it really hard to maintain a level of excitement about the program. This feels like a complete rebuild without the optimism of a new coaching staff outlook.
This in particular is a VT issue but it is a symptom of a larger issue with the unsustainable nature of CFB at this point. Things are great if you're a fan of 12 teams, but otherwise... this is building to a collapse. It's paying to build a beach house in the tidal zone, it's absolutely going to get washed away on the regular, like clock work.

UNC with Belichick as head coach is going to eat our lunch. They won't even have to recruit, they are going to have elite players from all over the country lining up at their front step to play for the greatest head coach of all time. Even if we had our shit together, which we very much do not right now, this is terrible news for VT. Any hope we had of ever being able to get good talent in our region just got exponentially more difficult.
And I mean that, elite players want money and to be set up for success in the NFL. UNC has DEEP pockets, they will pay whatever it takes, and now they have the most successful NFL head coach of all time preparing them to be an NFL player. He won't have to recruit, they will flock to him just like they did to Saban at Bama.
Good again? Yes. Find the right coach, leverage the great fans, try to resonate with in-state kids. Great? compete at the highest level? unless something changes - fuck no. Not a chance.
