All the NCAA did was fight lawsuits to keep the status quo. And to be clear the playing field has never been level. We're seeing all of the money in the sport now, but players have been compensated under the table for over 100 years. Fans value their schools winning and are willing to funnel money into it. Just because it wasn't transparent, doesn't mean it has been fair.
The NCAA saw this coming down the pike for years as they lost multiple lawsuits. They ignored the problem instead of trying to put up any sort of guard rails at all. They could have acknowledged that NIL was coming and put in stronger rules regarding school related compensation - like making any school focused NIL against the rules to ensure only true NIL was occurring. Instead, they sat on their hands and this is where we are. I absolutely blame the NCAA. They made this significantly worse by sticking their fingers in their ears and refusing the ease the transition to a modern college football landscape.

I think this makes a ton of sense. Coaching salaries ballooned as a function of excess money being available and as a compensation for extremely good recruiters. You could pay a true coach a bit less and then allocate the "premium for a great recruiter" to a bigger budget to buy players.

Man the putt putt courses are only not a thing anymore because schools don't have to wow recruits, they just need to pay them.

And that money isn't being redirected from admins and coaches, its being diverted from other sports and it depends upon the average fan forking over more of their money.

As far as other sports go... I hear you, truly. I feel conflicted. On one hand, football really fuels everything - there's no denying it - so shouldn't they get a substantially bigger piece of the pie? On the other hand, I do think there's something cool about a competitive olympic sport program. But not as cool as having a great football program.
All so the 18 year olds who already had a leg up on everyone can now make sure their grandkids have a leg up, too
I mean... Most kids playing other college sports - Baseball, Tennis, Softball, Track, Swimming, etc - already come from a much more privileged background than your typical football or basketball player does. Not sure an equity argument really holds here.

The AD is getting money from 'main campus' - this is very new in VT athletics, as far as I know.
You could see this coming and it's to the detriment of the sport and the schools. A major downside to the endless downsides of the NIL. This horse race to the bottom was viewable and predictable from a long way off.
I cannot blame the NCAA for going hands-off.
They attempted to prevent this and present a somewhat even playing field for years.
Once that floodgate opened no one could predict where the legal ended and lawsuits began.

Didn't he play a lot at the end of last year (his freshman year) and then get a knee injury with off season surgery? I can understand not wanting to rush a guy back off of knee surgery, especially when we theoretically had a stable of talented senior WRs.

If he is this rigid, there's no way he survives coaching greedy 18-year-olds.....
He can try to control UNC, but they don't control the system.
Better yet, it's brought the money into the light.
This - NIL and the portal have just exposed the underbelly of sport. Fans can no longer be blissfully ignorant. Coaches won't be able to demand the same pay. Administrators can no longer hide money in water slides and putt putt courses. University leaders were willing to sell their souls to broadcasters. Now it's time to collect.
