This is pure conjecture but is there any way they did this because they're anticipating not a lot of students showing up to watch what will likely be a bottom 3rd men's bball team? And having the band there might look better than a James Johnson era student section?

Honestly the only really impressive thing is him playing both ways well.
You say this like it's not that big of a deal? When else has this happened in modern college football? Myles Jack for his freshman season a decade ago, Jebrill Peppers, Chris Gamble, Charles Woodson, and Champ Baily? That's like 1.5 players per decade since 1990.
Not only that, but the sheer amount of snaps he's playing is insane. He's playing way more snaps than any of those other guys.
Finally, he's electrifying. Just youtube search 'Travis Hunter Highlight reel'
He is isn't he is a worthy either side of the ball.

Better not be the last one... he's a concensus top 10 pick, with a very likely shot at going #1 overall.
Look, the Heisman trophy is to be awarded to the "most outstanding" player in college football. Every voter interprets that differently. To me, it's NOT an MVP award or the 'best' player, but I think of it as the most electrifying player. The player with the most 'holy shit' moments. The player who makes you say "how did he do that?!" the most. To me, Travis Hunter is absolutely one of those players.
Yes, I was being quite hyperbolic, and that part of my comment was utterly ridiculous.
That said, I think the point stands, you shouldn't be an asshole to people, and if someone is an asshole to you, you shouldn't have to just sit their and take it - you should be able to walk away. And NIL/the portal gives players leverage to hold asshole coaches accountable.
I'm not, and never have, said that our current iteration of NIL/portal is ideal, but I do think that it's an obvious and worthwhile improvement over the situation from 6+ years ago.
All of those concerns seem relevant.
Is the deep concern that big donors are pulling strings, or that the students/guard are displaced, or the optics on tv...
Just like FSU going undefeated last year didn't matter because enough people didn't feel like it was good enough.
It wasn't "enough people". It was the deciders.

If you look at the picture in the original post you will see the platform they installed but they also blocked the students from sitting in the three rows next to the platform in front of the band.
The platform and empty seats looked terrible in the women's game yesterday.
The band filled in some of the empty space in its designated seating area but it definitely did not look full.
See picture below. Now imagine that entire red box empty.
All season is what the students are being told. I actually liked them bringing the band down into the corner but moving the band into the Cassell Guard space looked awful on TV.
They erected a platform about 4 rows up that looks like the party decks at UNC football.
They also blocked off three rows of seats near the front of the section so those rows are empty in front of the band.
The band also seemed to have alot of open space in it's seating area that also looked terrible.
Is this just for the span from fall finals until spring semester starts?
Cassell holds like 3,000 more people, there should easily be a way to get students and the band behind the basket.
No offense, but if you punch your boss you're going to be unemployed and in jail, I don't care what he says to you.
Its definitely an impassioned response but I stand by it. Are we really better with donors money if those same donors are causing things like this?

Have you watched Hunter? He is the most electrifying player in cfb since Lamar Jackson. Dude makes 2-3 holy-shit-how-did-he-do-that plays every game. He's a consensus top 10 draft pick as a receiver OR Corner. Also - I think you're minimizing the fact that he is playing DOUBLE the snaps of anyone else - that's insane. I think You're nuts if you don't think he should be invited to New York.
We should be celebrating the heisman coverage so far. The fact that hunter (non-qb at Colorado) Jeanty (g5) are getting legit coverage is fantastic.

Florida with the most disgusting victory I've ever seen. They won the turnover battle 1-0 but lost the yelling-at-players score at like a million to zero.
I hear you about Hunter. People are talking like he's the frontrunner and I'm not into it as much as am I into Jeanty, though he still won't outdo Barry Sanders 1988 season at 2628 rushing yards (238.9 yds/game and 7.6 yards/carry).
Jeanty will be likely be playing in 14 total games this year (10 so far, with 1893 yards for 189.3 yards/game and 7.4 yards/carry, and a high likelihood of playing in the MWC championship game and then a bowl/maybe playoff) but a 2,000+ yard season is uncommon.
There are 29 instances of 2000+ yards in a season and the list is littered with Heisman winners (and non-winners) so maybe Jeanty's strength of schedule will hold him back.
Still Gabriel and Ward are on the list, and Gabriel is leading the #1 team in the country too, so he's got that going for him.
I think we embraced #goACC culture the day we got into the ACC, and especially winning it in football the first year. It feels like football went on autopilot and the stagnation slowly started then and hasn't recovered. We don't have that championship winning, aggressive mentality with football or frankly most of our athletics programs. The old guard and powers that be at VT got their wish with ACC membership - finally brushing elbows with UVA, UNC, Duke, etc. That was 'Mission Accomplished' for VT athletics. It's too much of a small potatoes country club vibe in the AD, and the people with money and influence would rather worry about the kids being too darn loud and feeling special going to games than actually winning. I'm frankly sick of the whole thing. I love VT as an alum, but rooting for their sports programs has jumped the shark for me.
Pry had a quote during the summer at a Hokie Club event that VT "doesn't want to end up in the poo poo league" regarding conference realignment. Well, we have found ourselves in the poo poo league, with the poo poo coach/staff, poo poo AD, and poo poo leadership/vision for athletics. Congratulations!

Just like FSU going undefeated last year didn't matter because enough people didn't feel like it was good enough.
So as someone who has only been to 1 Tech home basketball game but hundreds of VCU games starting in 1983 just weeks after I was born going to them at the old Richmond Colosseum to then new build Seigel center the band has always been behind the basket for them. What's the issue? Why not have both the band and the students there?
Look, I don't love this, but I also don't think it's unreasonable or even a bad idea - the team might not be good this year (aka attendance goes down). This is a way to get a quick win by making donors feel like they're being heard and make the stands look less empty for TV, with little downside.
