The bye week has me thinking I am going to have to do some chores and errands that I have conveniently been able to avoid being out of town the past 5 weeks.

Yeah, I know. PIs are complaining enough now with the bump to $50k under new guidelines. I have been told by current faculty how bad postdoc salaries used to be. It's still just something that always makes me question my choices. I have friends in private companies making 2-3 times what I do, yet I'm working just as hard or harder to pursue a different path. The academic life is a tough one all around.

I'll start.

The bye week is like getting a card at Christmas that says your gift is a donation to a charity. You appreciate its value, but can't help but feel a little empty inside.

Congratulate me, mine Hokie/TKP brethren and sistren, for I have become the 269th to join the club. I wanted to make sure to join on a memorable number. In it for life! Let's take TKP beyond the top!

You can! Designs that are already in existence probably won't score quite as high in the "unique-ness" category, but it's still a perfectly cromulent submission (you did a fantastic job on those, though, they look great).

Comparing a guy who just committed to a 1st overall draft pick, and NBA all-star before he plays a game on campus might be jumping the gun...just a tad.

Granted Kyrie is doing that to another NBA star, and Wabissa would be playing NCAA athletes so maybe its not entirely unfounded based on comparative level of competition.

I wanted to put these on my set last year when I made them but it was going to be too time consuming to paint. I am still all about it though.

The thing about the immediate post Vick era was that the prevailing attitude was that if they couldn't go undefeated and go to the MNC game, why even try? Once those teams lost that first game or two, it was over.

If you think $42k is peanuts, at least that's after the Feds bumped it up in the early 2000's from the upper $20k's to the mid-$30k's. And I can remember back maybe 25 yrs ago - before the Feds made another big adjustment in the guideline (early 90's IIRC) - when 1st yr post docs were making something like $19,500.

I forget how much that jump was but it seemed massive (at that time)...something like $5k over 3 years. Drove grant PIs nuts because they had to pay these "spoiled" post docs this new king's ransom yet they got no additional money to do so.

If the winning design requires it. I didn't really know what I was doing when I started, and chose the flattest piece of wood I could find at Lowe's (and if it doesn't work out, I may just build another set).
