George George IV. Don't want to confuse him with the other three.

I think NC State jumped a little early on him. 2 years at NIU with someone else's players, players who were cream of the crop for that level of competition. No proven ability to build a program. Defensive Coordinator background. And when he was hired NC State needed BUILDING not even just maintaining.

So far he is
'13: 3-9 (0-8)
'14: 8-5 (3-5) (bowl win)
'15: 7-6 (3-5) (bowl loss)
'16: 2-1 (0-0)

I think this year he needs to make a move in conference and go 4-4 or even 5-3. Certainly needs 6 or 7 regular season wins to maintain momentum, and ideally a bowl win to go 8-5 or 9-4.

Losses to Louisville, FSU, Clemson almost guaranteed, Must-win games are Wake Forest, Syracuse, Boston College. Probable losses to Miami, UNC (and Notre Dame) but if they pull a win in any of those, or upset one of the 'big 3' in the Atlantic then I think his job is safe for another year/extension. And heck, the way Notre Dame is playing that may even be a winnable match-up since it's a home game and ND is a shitstorm right now.

You gotta remember when evaluating Doeren - He started with nothing, similar to Mendendall at LOLUVA, and has built them into a team that is on the plus-side of .500 thanks to OOC cakewalks. He's gotta show some positive movement and get beyond .500 in conference now that he's increased the talent level.

I have a good friend that played for coach O and absolutely dispises the man. Said he was the worst person he has ever played for.

The main obstacle to switching systems is the OL and a QB. QB can be solved in a season or two. Same goes for the OL, especially if they go for a quick-strike type spread offense. ECU/Duke style, (or hell even Fuente/Cornelsen style) where the ball goes where it goes quickly to minimize the impact of a pass rush, masking deficiencies on the OL.

Yeah, like the NCSU coach, RichRod has a pillow year. But if they win 3 or 4 games, next year will be rough.

All homerism aside, I expect this team to win the Coastal and compete well in the ACCCG, barring injury to a certain QB who is making the most of his starting opportunity. Since we are losing a host of key contributors this year including Sam, Isaiah, Bucky(probably) Clark, Williams, Ekanimal and others, I feel like we could even see some regression next year. VT is very talented and motivated this season to win, and winning the ACCCG, one game at a time, is my expectation.
