in that 60 minute sample size, it's only the points that matter in the end. Look at how many plays we had in a game against wake forest in 2014. Or against Miami that year. Any game where you have turnovers, stalled drives, missed field goals, etc would skew that statistic to make a team look better or worse than they really played. Any meaningful statistic has to incorporate points.

Someone brought up a GT style of play vs a Clemson style of play and a reason to prioritize points per drive instead of points per play and I can see that, because all the arguments for PPP also applies to PPD. Just number of plays per game could be high no matter the result. Imagine a scenario like Joe Joel brought up only instead of one team scoring on 10 plays every 2 minutes, both teams went 5 plays and turned over every 2 minutes. Each team would have 75 plays in the game, but no points. Would one offense be considered better because they got off 75 plays? Would one defense be considered worse because they allowed 75 plays, but no points?

Yeah but not really. The talent gap between Alabama, Auburn, LSU, Georgia, Tennessee, Ole Miss, Florida, Texas A&M is enormous compared to the ACC where FSU and Clemson are the only comparable recruiters. Additionally Miss St, SCar (outside of recent downturn), Mizzou, and Arkansas have been better and more talented than most ACC teams as well in recent years, SCar was very awful last year but recently had three straight 11 win seasons and won 5 straight over Clemson until 2014.

I get that it sucks to hear the SEC praised so much, but it really is very different. They have Vandy and Kentucky as bottom feeders but from there on the average talent steps up way beyond that of the ACC. SEC fans can be brutally annoying but it's pretty ludicrous to suggest the ACC is similar. Look at Alabama's schedule this year and then look at Clemson's and try to pretend that they are even close to similar.

I will value having more points at the than my opponent end of the game... I will value having more points at the than my opponent end of the game... I will value having more points at the than my opponent end of the game...

I have no idea what either of them stand for, but instead of looking it up, I have been spending way too long trying to guess. I believe our offensive Sack and Punt numbers were too high, but not as high as our Formation Proliferation Ideology, which had to be one the highest in the country. I expect we will be able to improve both this year.

Not much difference between 1 and 4...not much difference between VT and UNC...not much difference between UNC and Clemson...not much difference between Clemson and Alabama...

...conclusion, VT = CFP champion.

Who gives a shit about the ACC. Clemson winning doesn't change the perception that it is top heavy and the bottom is atrocious (which it is) and their fans are aw-aw-aw-aw-aw-aw-aw-aw-aw-awful

They're in a contract negotiation. It's not "what's owed" until they agree on a contract.

It's a mischaracterization to say that the owners are bad, and Bosa and his agent are good. They're just parties on either end of a negotiation.

Nah, Clemson gives me a bad taste in my mouth. I can never root for an ACC team that we don't currently hold the win over.

Side note, fuck Maryland forever.

It's certainly not the norm, but it's certainly possible. They made a substantial turnaround with only a fraction of the offense installed. Just saying that a good offense can be successful, quickly. It's not like we are going from a 3 yards and a cloud of dust B1G roster to a spread overnight. We have guys in place who can fit this scheme beautifully. There will be growing pains, but I think a regression in the offense is not to be expected just because it's new.

And I think that lends to the fact that Clemson might have been a bit of an exception to the norm.

I'd rather see Clemson win it than:

Anyone in the Big Ten
Anyone in the Pac12 except Stanford
Anyone in the Big12 except Oklahoma
Any G5 member
Anyone in the SEC
Anyone else in the ACC except VT
Notre Dame

So, at worst, Clemson is my 5th highest, and most likely, rooting interest for the NC at this point in the season.
Would you really cut off the ACC to spite Clemson fans?

yep- cobia are still around. Probably around the CBBT pilings or on the ocean front at this point. Sadly, unless it is around DC, I probably won't get to fish until October.

You are doing things the right way by hiring a guide, for a beginning, and I respect your decision to do so. You maximize the experience and minimize the long term costs when you hire a guide. But of course, that is a ridiculously biased opinion from someone who fished for most of my life without much guidance. The single most transformative shift for me in my fishing was fishing with guides that I met through, well, life. I didn't even for a moment think anything less of you for your post, but was maybe wondering about your charter after French chimed in. I envy you your trip with your family and would have loved to have been there with you all.

As for the Bay, I can say it is a so-so year for me. Many chances at big cobia, none landed. Flounder fishing has been poor to spotty at best. We caught nine yesterday, but only one keeper. Also caught a bunch of small redfish the last couple of weeks, but haven't caught an eater yet. This year, its either too big to eat, or too small to keep.
Spanish mackerel are biting locally, around Windmill Bar down to Wolftrap Light, and every time I get to The Cell, the spadefish are happening. Small schoolie stripers in the Piankatank, small bluefish everywhere, eating sized croaker still hard to find consistently, spot not here for me at all, but I don't target them. That's all the news that is the news, but I'm hardly fully clued in. I suspect folks are finding big reds somewhere around here, and most serious guys are still getting cobia, just not me.

What do you think of some of the other advanced metrics that get used like S&P+ and FPI?
I've loved Bill Connelly's preview series this offseason based around S&P+ and it seems like it judges teams more accurately than anything else I've seen, and it seems to be based on sound principles (everything judged on a play-by-play basis, which seems closer to what you're discussing here) but I don't know the nuts and bolts of how it works.
ESPN bandies about FPI quite a bit, and it's conclusions typically seem a little ridiculous but I know nothing about how it works.
