I just have seen the defensive play start to show cracks the last couple years, and it makes me very uneasy to see us not really addressing many of these areas right now. I completely get the need to load up quickly on offense, but recruiting has never been a zero sum game, and we have guys who specialize in recruiting offense and we have guys who specialize in recruiting defense, and I'm kind of wondering where the defensive work is going, especially while we're seeing some of the ones we do get in absolute placed of need eventually decommit.
I would imagine a lot of them are just going to be confused by what a modern offense actually looks like. Any watching of Oregon, Baylor, or Clemson shows that sweeps and bubble screens are very effective. But someone who doesn't watch anything but VT will probably rally against it.
As a mother of three boys that have all gone/are going through that 17 – 22 yr maturity process, my wife would beg to differ with Coach Gangster Hat.

You say that, but I know sitting around Hokie fans during winning seasons, winning games etc that certain people can ALWAYS find something to complain about, especially if they think they can do it better.

However, I think it's more of a masterplan to front load the offense for two cycles to get as many playmakers as possible and then even back out.
I imagine the convo going something like this:
Fuente: So that's the plan. I can get our Offense there but I need a bit of time. And I need our defense to keep kicking ass. You think that's possible?
Foster:
Fuente: uh... Bud Foster
Foster:
I think it's more that GT is really dumb, they have a history of terrible contracts.

Obviously we don't know how these recruits will perform, so changing thier ratings now won't change them, but it is at least indicating that the coaches are looking at guys that should produce.

That was dumb. In fairness, the reporter (I think she's a reporter at least so we are going with that) tweeted that he apologized, said that was wrong, and never should have said that, but this is a sound bite that will haunt Fedora if it goes big.
I get what he was trying to say, but he said it with as little tact as possible.

The TL;DR is this article deals with a lot of hot button issues in the world today, being a female in a male dominated industry, but the tie back to Fedora is that he called the reporter/writer (she refers to herself as a writer a few times) to offer a sincere apology and it was foot in mouth.

This has been a concern of mine for a long time. VT's coaching staff was outstanding at getting the most out of the talent they had, but having the raw talent to fall back upon (to make plays) when the first string (or second, third,...) was knocked out, or simply a long knock-down, drag out fight of a game against powerhouse in which having a good rotation (without performance dropoff) was key, has shown up through the years. That type of player development takes years (not coach 'em up for the next Saturday), but if the roster depth has sufficient talent (a.k.a. Tyrod in his 'redshirt' year) the underlying talent can may plays despite the lack of development time. Consistency, on the other hand, needs that development time, and it showed as Tyrod, Brewer, etc... had offseasons to learn and develop.
Given the talent depth issues, once the injury bug hits, the slope to gaining W's becomes much steeper.
