Considering it looks like that EVERY DAY from October till March yes. The average HIGH in Ames in Jan is 29 while in Blacksburgs it's 42. My wife is from Iowa, her brother went to Iowa State. I've seen what it looks like in winter.
I watch pretty much every Clemson game and no DC has benefitted more from having great talent in the last few years. They've relied heavily on having a much faster, bigger DL than the other team can handle that creates a ton of pressure. He doesn't make a lot of great in game adjustments either, which is how he got into shootouts with a terrible SC team, Syracuse, and an NC State team that we held to 13 points. I wouldn't trade Bud for Venables for anything. Plus big game Bud gives us a chance, his defense shut down Bama's run game in 2013 and we all remember what he did against Ohio State in 2014 and that is with significantly less talent than Venables has worked with. As a counter example, Venables got absolutely wrecked in big games by FSU and Bama, good lord, Kiffin thoroughly out schemed Venables over and over again. That second OJ Howard touchdown was the best schematic answer to an inverted cover two I think I have ever seen.
Edit: Also, Clemson's potentially best ever defense in 2014 that was number #1 by basic metrics, got lit up by the two good offenses they played all year. Georgia put on a clinic rushing for 328 yards with 8ypc. Then UNC with one of the historically worst defenses in P5 history, lost a shootout to Clemson on the road where UNC threw for 436 yards and 11.2 yards per pass. The same year @ UNC we held them to under 200 yards passing and only 323 total yards.
Venables defenses have been too big and too fast for most of the relatively inept offenses in the ACC, but when they play more nuanced, efficient, or explosive offenses they tend to have the same issues people get upset with Bud about, except they are loaded with 4 and 5 star guys on defense.

Oddly enough, Ames and ISU (where ISU is - I had to look it up) sounds quite similar to Blacksburg and VT

I wouldn't take this one as too much of a hit. I get the sense he wasn't a high priority and we've got a very young defensive backfield right now. While not stacked with blue chips, there's a lot of guys here or coming in rated higher than him. ISU would offer a much quicker path to the field.

Most of the other really good DCs have moved on and become HCs. Bud is definitely way up the list based on past history, but current DCs would have to think Venables would be at the top of the list if just looking at most recent years.
Trying to understand why someone would commit to ISU rather than VT.

I still believe that Bud would make a good head coach if given the opportunity. Last year, it felt like the consensus opinion was that we needed to go out and get Herman, Fuente, Morris, or Smart even if that meant we had to let Bud go. He has more of a DC temperament than a HC temperament.
If Whit hired Bud as HC, I would have been ok with it. I thought Bud earned the job after 2 decades of work and I didn't want to see leave him the program. He's one of the great assistants in the history of college football and I believed he was too valuable to let go. Bud Fosters don't grow on trees.
But this is why Whit (and then Fuente) gets paid the big bucks to make these decisions and I don't. It all worked out in the end. We got a new beloved HC and kept our beloved DC.

Confirms what we've known all along, nothing but the best.
So the VT team was a second seed and have the 2nd fastest time on the course: 2:16 behind only West Point at 2:09.
I think he was a pretty high priority we just got outsold by the new ISU staff.
